Burner’s Burning Questions – Offseason Edition, Mock Draft (3rd Mock Posted)

So you wouldn't be surprised to see Joe Cullen beat out Mitchell Schwartz assuming they were both drafted?

That makes me wonder why you think Schwartz is worthy of the 3rd round pick then. Is there another RT prospect that you like better than Schwartz and Cullen? What about Donald Stephenson out of Oklahoma, some are saying he'd be a good candidate to switch to RT?

The insight of China is always amazing (on many topics - football and non-football).

Take a look at who was visiting Redskins Park a couple of days ago.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs...QAnd7aDT_blog.html?wprss=rss_football-insider

I have added him to the latest mock as a possible UDFA pickup. By having him in for a visit, he could garner a look in the 5th mock on Monday. I will spend some time studying about it this weekend. I will also spend some time studying Chigbo Anunoby as per Serv's post/insight.

Again, great pickup China - and Serv.

Again, doing your homework can prove to be an interesting thing when studying the draft, team needs, FA signings, team visits, etc.

For those who are playing in the BGO draft contest, here are some interesting items.

First, speaking of team visits, here is an interesting nugget...

http://www.csnwashington.com/footba...in-visits-Redskins?blockID=688536&feedID=6355

Turbin has been in town for a visit.

Others who have been to Redskins Park include the following:

- Arizona State CB Omar Bolden (Projected to be a sixth or seventh rounder - could be a late round steal if he returns to first round talent grade - missed 2011 with ACL injury).
- LSU DT Michael Brockers (Thinking he will drop to the third round? Not likely).
- Baylor QB Robert Griffin, III (On his way to town).
- Stanford QB Andrew Luck (Only if the Colts take RG3).
- Arkansas State S Kelcie McCray (A late round possibility - he has garnered some attention, but is probably no longer an option as the Redskins have added several safties in FA).
- Oklahoma OT Donald Stephenson (A possible 7th rounder or UDFA - Redskins seem to be very interested).
- Utah State RB Robert Turbin (Projected to be in the fourth round - moving up the boards - has completely overcome injury concerns).

Private workouts for team coaches and scouts include the following:

- West Virginia CB Keith Tandy (Projected to be a sixth or seventh rounder).
- Syracuse S Phillip Thomas (Projected to be a fourth or fifth rounder - has second round talent, but was suspended final two game of college career - probably illegal PED).

Burner’s Burning Questions – Offseason Edition, Mock Draft (5th Mock Posted)

Here is the fifth mock from BBQ. Some major adjustments have been made and an UDFA projection list has been updated. As always, feel free to discuss it and add/subtract some players as desired. I will have new mocks on Mondays and Thursdays prior to the draft. A new feature added is the visits to Redskins Park.

BBQ Mock Draft Five

Round One:
Robert Griffin, III – QB, Baylor
Griffin is the franchise QB that Mike Shanahan has been seeking since John Elway. Griffin has many similarities to Elway, but is a much better athlete. Redskins are quickly falling in love with RG3 and he will become the face of the franchise for many years to come.

Round Three:
Projected trade. With a higher pick in the third round, the Redskins move further down in the third round and obtain an extra fourth rounder.

Round Three:
Tank Carder - ILB TCU
Carder is an athletic linebacker who could have the potential to push Perry Riley or London Fletcher to the bench. Carder is a leader with high character and solid skills. His versatility and flexibility in the 3-4 is what the Redskins covet in their linebacking corps.

Round Four:
Robert Turbin - RB, Utah State
Mike Shanahan has a knack for finding late round gems at RB and Turbin will be no exception to this rule. A sleeper prospect that is strong and very quick – a perfect fit for the ZBS running game. A running game featuring Helu, Royster, and Turbin will be a nightmare for opposing defenses.

Round Four:
Projected Trade. The Redskins use this trade to pick up a fifth and seventh rounder.

Round Four:
Chase Minnifield - CB, Virginia
Even though his stock has dropped, Minnifield is a quality prospect who will fill an immediate need as a nickel CB. He could become a quality starter within a year or two. Raheem Morris will be able to mold Minnifield into valued member of the secondary.

Round Five:
Ryan Broyles - WR/KR, Oklahoma
Broyles has enthusiastically dedicated himself to coming back from a knee injury. His stock has dropped, but this is an unfair situation - Broyles is a legitimate late first round talent who has blazing speed. Drafting him would bring an end to the Santana Moss era in Washington. Is Broyles really a target? Here is how that question can be answered. The Redskins missed on Eddie Royal - the actual replacement for Moss. Enter Broyles. Last year, the Redskins made the University of Nebraska their draft headquarters. Sure, the Redskins are hanging out with Donald Stephenson, but Oklahoma will become the new Nebraska in 2012 for the Redskins.

Round Five:
Projected Trade. The Redskins use this trade to pick up a sixth and seventh rounder.

Round Six:
John Cullen - OT, Utah
Cullen is a RT prospect who could be a very reliable backup for many years. It would not be a surprise to see him as the opening day starter at RT as well.

Round Six:
Desmond Wynn - G, Rutgers
Desmond Wynn is another OL prospect that could start ahead of Maurice Hurt or Kory Lichtensteiger if he is able to learn and excel in the ZBS early on. At the very least, Wynn would be a very capable backup at both guard positions.

Round Seven:
B.J. Coleman - QB, UT-Chattanooga
Coleman has the tools to be a decent solution as a long term backup in the NFL. He will need time to adjust to the game and could produce as a starter or in relief, especially when injuries occur to the starting QB.

Round Seven:
Donald Stephenson - T, Oklahoma
Is this the player who sends Jammal Brown to the waiver wires? The Redskins seem to like Stephenson and the feeling is mutual. Drafting a pair of tackles is not out of the question, but make no mistake about it, the coaching staff likes this young man and as mentioned earlier, Oklahoma players seem to be a target for the Redskins in the upcoming draft.

Round Seven:
Shawn Loiseau - ILB, Merrimack
Shawn Loiseau is a very talented LB who could learn under the tutelage of London Fletcher (assuming he returns). Loiseau has a high motor and the skillset to be a superb inside player for many years to come. Don’t let the small college label fool you – Fletcher came from a small school as well. Loiseau has the goods to be a great one.

Possible FA Pickups:
Jarrett Lee - QB, LSU
Marc Tyler - RB, Southern Cal
Derek Moye - WR, Penn State
Dan Hoch - OT, Missouri
Daron Rose - OT, North Alabama
Lonnie Edwards - G, Texas Tech
Scott Wedige - C, Northern Illinois
Chigbo Anunoby - DT, Morehouse
DaJohn Harris - DT, USC
Akiem Hicks - DT, Regina University (Canada)
Josh Linam - ILB, Central Florida
Darius Nall - DE/OLB, Central Florida
Tashaun Gipson - CB, Wyoming
Matt Merletti - SS, North Carolina

* - Players in bold could be specific targets in the UDFA market. This is based on team needs and interest.

- LSU DT Michael Brockers (Thinking he will drop to the third round? Not likely).

Curious BB, will you be doing a mock where we actually trade up in the second round?

Curious BB, will you be doing a mock where we actually trade up in the second round?

I'd like to see a trade up to go after the likes of a Bobby Massie or Zebrie Sanders, but some mocks have Sanders dropping into the 3rd round. So who know?

Curious BB, will you be doing a mock where we actually trade up in the second round?

I know this has been discussed elsewhere and a site or two has mentioned it as a possibility, but there are too many needs to be filled. We don't have a second rounder this year and we don't have a first rounder in 2013 and 2014. Depth is needed and there are some good players that can fill team needs in the third, fourth, and fifth rounds of this draft. The same will probably hold true for 2013 and 2014 as well.

I'll continue to monitor team news each day prior to the draft and make adjustments as warranted. Keep in mind that I could be 100% wrong about who is drafted (minus RG3 of course). I could be wrong about a possible move to the second round.

Too, you never know what Coach Shanahan has up his sleeve. The Donald Stephenson thing could be a ruse - i.e., taking attention from another coveted lineman or using the Oklahoma visits to really check on Ryan Broyles. Could there be a trade involving Santana Moss, DeAngelo Hall, Jammal Brown, etc.?

I realize all this. Just figured with a high 3rd, and a couple potential vets thrown in, it's not impossible that if someone we covet, whom we had ranked as a late 1st rounder, is sitting there at the back half of the second, we might pull the trigger.

Just fun to speculate. I'd do it myself, but I don't watch college football, and don't know a thing about the current class.

It's obvious, you do.

This is why I mentioned that Coach Shanahan could have something up his sleeve - with him, you never know. :) We ended up with picks in every round last year and that was no where near the case before the draft. Could it happen again?

For those who missed it, a new mock (the fifth one thus far) has been posted at the bottom of the previous page.

Burner’s Burning Questions – Offseason Edition, Mock Draft (6th Mock Posted)

Here is the sixth mock from BBQ. Some major adjustments have been made once again and an UDFA projection list has been updated. Possible June 1st cuts have been added as well. As always, feel free to discuss it and add/subtract some players as desired. I will have new mocks on Mondays and Thursdays prior to the draft. A new feature added is the visits to Redskins Park.

Projected trade. The Redskins move down for the second time in round three and gain an extra fifth rounder in the process.

Round Three:
Marvin McNutt - WR, Iowa
The new franchise quarterback will need some reliable targets and McNutt is an underrated receiver who could have a good rookie season for the Redskins. Too, a replacement is need for Jabar Gaffney – more on that later.

Round Six:
John Cullen - OT, Utah
Cullen is a RT prospect who could be a very reliable backup for many years. It would not be a surprise to see him as the opening day starter at RT as well.

Round Six:
Projected Trade. Jabar Gaffney has spoken and team officials are not pleased – the WR is traded. The Redskins use this trade to pick up a sixth rounder.

Round Six:
B.J. Coleman - QB, UT-Chattanooga
Coleman has the tools to be a decent solution as a long term backup in the NFL. He will need time to adjust to the game and could produce as a starter or in relief, especially when injuries occur to the starting QB.

Round Seven:
George Bryan - TE, N.C. State
Bryan could be the player who puts Chris Cooley on notice. A reliable blocker with good hands, George Bryan is certainly talented enough to make the team and this selection could force Rob Myers to the practice squad.

Well, certainly nobody will be able to say you got lucky on Turbin if we do pick him, lol. You've had him in the same spot for every mock! I've honestly never even heard of the kid. :)

I just had a feeling about him early on and when he visited Redskins Park, it was really cool to see. In our draft game last year I predicted the Helu and Royster pickups (albeit, in the wrong rounds), so Turbin is not a reach when you think about it.

Neither had I, but he seems to be a name that keeps popping up in mock drafts. Walters has us picking him with our early 4th but I have seen him going to visit with other teams and projected as a late 3rd rounder.

Also BB, I am extremely surprised to see your Stephenson choice. He is being projected by Walters to go in the 3rd to us.

I took a look see and Walters didn't have Stephenson rated or drafted prior to the Redskins having interest. It is a reach and Walters is basing this on one team visit and nothing more.

Looks that way - and the faux denial coming in 3...2...1...

Irsay was just coering himself by saying they were continuing to evaluate Griffin.

If Griffin were to come in and be a star right away, Irsay would be on the hot seat if fans and media thought he didn't do his due diligence with the pick.

I see Moss as the odd man out.

He is 32, has slowed down and now projects to a #3 role. His cap number at $4.9M would provide needed relief for the team in signing free agents in the secondary market.

Lanky, here's some info for ya about Turbin.

First from the Giant's BigBlueView site:

Let's use today's 2012 NFL Draft Prospect Profile to add another running back to the list of players we have discussed thus. Utah Stat's Robert Turbin is a powerful inside runner at 5-foot-10, 222 pounds who seems like the type of player who might be a fit as a replacement for Brandon Jacobs. So, let's take a closer look at Turbin.

Related: Emmitt Smith Breaks Down Running Back Prospects
Interestingly, since Turbin draws comparisons to New York Jets running back Shonn Greene, the current Draft Tek mock has him going to the Jets with the 78th overall selection. I put that out there only as an indicator of where Turbin's draft stock currently sits.

Let's go to the scouting reports.

From Wes Bunting of the National Football Post:

"Physically, he reminds me some of New York Jets RB Shonn Greene. But as a runner, he looks more natural as a zone guy who he can use his cut back ability to pick his way through traffic, square his shoulders and then attack daylight. Has the skill set to mature into a starter at the next level, but because of his lack of a great burst, he doesn't strike me as a guy who is ever going to have a real gaudy yards per carry average. Nevertheless, he should be able to keep you ahead of the chains."

From CBS Sports:

"For those who haven't seen Turbin, he's a virtual pinball of muscle. Possessing as impressive an upper body physique as any running back in the country (well, perhaps excluding Alabama's Trent Richardson), Turbin uses his strong arms and good leg drive to plow through defenders. He's hardly just a power runner, however, possessing surprising agility and acceleration for such a powerful back. Rated by NFLDraftScout.com as a likely fourth round pick and the No. 11 running back overall, Turbin rushed for 3,315 yards and 40 touchdowns over his Aggie career. He's also a reliable receiver out of the backfield, having caught 67 passes for 845 yards and 11 more scores and is among the stouter pass blockers of this year's running back class."

20120226_kdl_ss1_222_extra_large.jpg

(He is kinda thick, ain't he?)

From Sideline Scouting:

Positives: Huge running back with good build up speed... Combination of size and speed will be very appealing... Physically looks like an NFL feature back... Strong build, has a large upper body, a load to bring down, is tough to bring down when tackling him high because of his superior upper body strength... Looks like a good fit for a zone blocking scheme... Is very patient and is more of a one-cut runner than he is elusive.

Negatives: A stiff runner, there really is no smoothness to his game, is very aggressive and has to gear down when making cuts... Doesn't look like a natural runner... Has a tendency to carry the ball away from his body when he's not running through trash... More of an inside runner than outside, struggles to get outside.

Link:http://www.bigblueview.com/2012/3/22/2888200/2012-nfl-draft-prospect-profile-robert-turbin-rb-utah-state

From Pro Football Weekly.

Upside:
• Good bulk (pumped-up upper body)
• Productive when healthy
• Lowers his shoulder on defenders
• Competitive speed
• Protects the ball
• Catches naturally

Downside:
• Does not press the line of scrimmage
• Runs upright and builds to speed
• Tight hips
• Average instincts and anticipation
• Gears down to cut
• Durability questions

The Way We See It:
Strong, compactly built, one-cut, downhill zone runner who missed two full seasons because of injuries. Despite his size, is not a true power back, as his YPC decreased late in games and late in the season. Can be effective as a tandem back in the right system.

Knowing Shanny's "thing" for mid-round RBs I thought a bit more info might be in order. :)

Burner’s Burning Questions – Offseason Edition, Mock Draft (7th Mock Posted)

Here is the seventh mock from BBQ. Beginning on Monday, a new mock will be added each day – including special mocks next Friday and Saturday. Some major adjustments have been made once again and an UDFA projection list has been updated. Possible June 1st cuts have been highlighted as well. As always, feel free to discuss it and add/subtract some players as desired. Another feature is the visits to Redskins Park and this will be updated accordingly.

BBQ Mock Draft Seven

The new franchise quarterback will need some reliable targets and McNutt is an underrated receiver who could have a good rookie season for the Redskins. Too, a replacement is need for Jabar Gaffney – more on that later.

Round Five:
Projected Trade. The Redskins use this trade to pick up a sixth and seventh rounder.

Round Five:
Philip Thomas - FS, Syracuse
During the offseason, the Redskins have been bolstering their safety corps and will continue to do the same in the draft. Thomas is a nice prospect and had a private workout with the team recently. Thomas’ suspected PED use earned him a suspension toward the end of the season, but it is believed that his mistake was similar to Jeremy Jarmon’s.

Omar Bolden - CB, Arizona State
The Redskins had Bolden in for a visit and for a good reason – he is a very talented CB that could easily slip to the seventh round. Prior to missing the 2011 season with a knee injury, Bolden was considered to be one of the best prospects at his position. He is worth the risk here and could be a major steal at this juncture of the draft.

Derek Moye - WR, Penn State
Dan Hoch - OT, Missouri
Daron Rose - OT, North Alabama
Lonnie Edwards - G, Texas Tech
Scott Wedige - C, Northern Illinois
Chigbo Anunoby - DT, Morehouse
DaJohn Harris - DT, USC
Akiem Hicks - DT, Regina University (Canada)
Josh Linam - ILB, Central Florida
Darius Nall - DE/OLB, Central Florida
Tashaun Gipson - CB, Wyoming
Matt Merletti - SS, North Carolina

* - Players in bold could be specific targets in the UDFA market. This is based on team needs and interest.

Players who have been to Redskins Park for a visit include the following:

Possible June 1st Cuts:
Santana Moss
Chris Cooley
Jammal Brown
DeAngelo Hall

No offensive linemen until round six BB?

I find that highly unlikely. And I'm not sure that we are exactly swimming in cash to bring in a ton of FAs.

You never know in the draft, and although I'd hope the Redskins aren't going 'BPA' with so many remaining needs, I can't imagine the next pick after RG3 is a WR, particularly given the off-season focus on that position. That would boggle my mind.

That being said, props on all of your quality draft posts BB - impressive.
