RG3 will declare for draft

I think we take a QB fairly high in draft even if we pick up Flynn in Free Agency. He has two NFL starts so I don't think he will be the concrete plan at QB.

Need to explain something...

El and I were having a spirited discussion over in the NFL forum and brought up how I have defended RG3 as a future star in the league.

A little history...

When DMc5 was starting to have problems last year, I began to look at QBs in college. RG3 was all but unknown at that time, but I could see he was a good athlete. I thought about starting a thread that would look at college QBs, but Rex had a decent stretch of games and the idea was ditched.

Fast forward to this most recent season. Rex got off to a good start, but I was continuing to look at RG3, Luck, Barkley, Jones, Tannehill, Moore, Foles, etc. When Rex started to struggle (Beck too), I brought RG3 (and others) to the forum - imho, enough was enough. My research was not limited to a few days or a few weeks. Watching RG3 and Luck for the last two years has been an amazing journey.

I don't consider myself to be a top notch scout or some sort of expert. After two years of looking at these guys, I felt like sharing what insight I had accumulated. I have no problem with anyone who disagrees with my opinions on RG3, Luck, or Tannehill. Will I defend my opinions? You bet. Just realize that it is not personal. Too, I realize that the vice is the versa. If we agreed on every topic, it would be very boring.

Let the debate(s) continue. :)

I agree completely. No chance we all agree. But part of being a fan is to disagree with other fans and debate it. RG3, Tannehill, Peyton Manning, Nick Foles, Rex Grossman etc... anybody could be the starting quarterback on the Redskins next year. You could name 15 or 20 people in the draft that could be our first draft pick in a few months. Can't wait to find out who but it is fun to debate.

I am a fan of Robert Griffin III, if he were to somehow fall to us at the 6 spot, I would say take him! I am just not a fan of any unproven rookie prospect coming into this league at the cost of numerous draft choices if we have so many holes to fill. Never have been, never will be. These kids have unbelievable amounts of pressure on their shoulders and more often than not that pressure proves too much for them.

Matt Ryan is a good QB, hasn't won a playoff game with all that talent around him.

Mark Sanchez does not look very good.

Matthew Stafford looked solid this year and seemed very passionate, but a little hot tempered and needs to curb it.

Sam Bradford seems like a quality QB and should succeed with Fisher given his propensity to run the football with a strong offensive line.

Cam Newton looks like the real deal having broken numerous rookie records, but needs a team around him..

Those are good draft picks. Would any of you have traded 2 #1's and a couple other picks for any one of them?

Let's look at a few more before you answer that question:

JaMarcus Russell
Tim Couch
David Carr
Joey Harrington
Vince Young
Alex Smith

Then there's the most successful of the bunch:

Eli Manning
Donovan McNabb
Phillip Rivers
Michael Vick
Carson Palmer

Eli is the only Super Bowl winner mentioned above and he looks like he is getting better with age.

Now, looking at all those QB's who have been chosen within the 1st 5 picks of the draft over the last 12 years, I do not believe there is a single player on that list who I would give up so much to acquire. 2 - 1st round picks and some more is too much for any of those QB's.

Here's an article with a list of successful QB's over the past decade. Whether you agree with it or not is not the point. From that list, tell me the name of one QB who was acquired with multiple first round picks:

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/126173-top-10-greatest-qbs-in-the-past-10-years-my-top-10

Eli and Mark Sanchez are the only ones. And I still wouldn't have traded that much for either of them. He has his flaws, not to mention the team is successful because it is a team unit. Plug in any number of QB's and they would have been a Super Bowl champ with that 07 team.

We keep debating risk/reward which is our personal barometer for this issue. I am of the crowd who is not willing to take a risk on a QB who has never seen a defense in the NFL at such a high cost, 2 - 1st round picks and likely a 2nd this year and something next year. Andrew Luck is about the closest to a sure thing and I must say I don't think I would spend that much on him.

You wouldn't give up two first rounders for a 23 year old Peyton Manning?

There his no way we can know RGIII or Andrew Luck or any other college prospect are going to be can't misses, another Peyton Manning. I have seen too many failures in that situation to believe the risk is worth the reward.

Over the next 2 years:
We are going to need a shut down corner. One can be had in FA but not this year, Claiborne might be an option.
We are going to need at least one ILB. Riley stepped up some, but he got beat in coverage a little too often and as deserving as he is, London Fletcher is going to be 37 next season. Donta Hightower can be had if we trade down to the mid teens and pick up another pick or 2 in the draft.
We desperately need to either shift Trent Williams over to RT and draft a top tier LT or find a RT. Riley Reiff might be an option.
We need a #1 WR. Now we could sign Bowe who is available in FA, but is he a true #1?

All of these positions are going to require a 1st, 2nd or 3rd round pick. If we give up those picks for a QB who "might" be Peyton Manning, what do we do? Go back to signing FA's to fill holes? Haven't we had enough of that? This team just isn't good enough and we are only going to get so many late round gems.

I think it's too risky. Too risky to put all that up for one player who could be the next Peyton Manning. We've seen the next Manning for 12-13 years now every year in the draft. None has worked out, except possibly his brother depending on how you grade him.

My point is if the Shanaclan see on film that RG3 could be that game changing QB that they can build a team around then they will trade up to get him. You look at the teams that are in the playoffs every year and most of them have franchise QBs. If Shanahan feels Tannehill, Foles, or one of the other guys can be that guy then fine but Shanahan knows he has to get QB this year. If he believes Flynn is the guy, great it won't cost us a draft pick. But if they believe RG3 is that franchise QB (P. Manning, T. Brady, Big Ben) then two first rounders is not too much to give up. We'll just have to see whether or whether not the Skins think RG3 is that.

Elephant, we do have some holes--every team does. But I'm not so certain that a "shutdown corner" is one of them. Certainly that hasn't stopped the Patriots, who have the league's worst defense.

I find the following very interesting, about the composition of one of the best teams in the league, and the best passing offense in the history of the NFL. How the Saints offense is comprised:

Pierre Thomas was undrafted.
Colston was a 7th rounder, nearly Mr. Irrelevant.
Jimmy Graham was a 3rd rounder.
Carl Nicks was a 5th rounder.
Bushrod was a 4th Rounder.
Jahri Evans was a 4th Rounder.
Chris Ivory, Undrafted Free agent.
Lance Moore, Undrafted Free Agent

Now, I'm not sure if that's just incredible scouting/drafting, or if it's incredible coaching. Or is it Drew Brees? One point being, we don't need first rounders to upgrade every position, or first rounders to create an incredible passing offense, and perennial SB contender. What we do need is a FO with brains, an elite coaching staff, and a great QB--our own Drew Brees.

I'm of the belief that we don't need a Jason Campbell, a TJ Yates, a Josh Freeman or any other so-so QB that isn't dominant at their position. Trent Dilfer may get you there once, but he won't get you there five times(Tom Brady).

Go get your RG3. Take your shot.

No, from what I've seen he definitely is not.

How do I know this? Am I a closet Chiefs fan?!?! Of course not. I've just made the "brilliant" move to draft him in my big money fantasy football league for the last two years based on potential. Laugh if you want at my info source, but i followed him as close as a lot of KC fans did. He's one of the most frustrating players I've ever drafted.

Bowe is about as sometimes as a receiver can get. One game he'll catch two TD's and in the next he'll catch one pass for 7 yards. It's not as if he's not getting targeted either. You could blame it on the QB revolving door in KC or lots of other factors, but great receivers find a way to make plays regardless. He doesn't.

Don't get me wrong, he's got all of the tools to be great, he just isn't, at least not on a consistent basis. Paying him a lot of money to be "the man" here in DC would be a huge mistake IMO.

For information purposes only from Football Outsiders -

Other notable FA wide receivers: Reggie Wayne, Pierre Garcon, Plaxico Burress, Robert Meachem, Roy Williams, Patrick Crayton, Steve Smith (PHI), Brandon Lloyd, Mario Manningham, Ted Ginn, Harry Douglas, Eddie Royal, Early Doucet, Jerome Simpson, Andre Caldwell, Laurent Robinson, Josh Morgan, Chaz Schilens

Hog, there are several names on that list I would love. Fwiw, I don't claim to have any "insider" access, but I did meet Eddie Royal's sister here in Orlando, Christina I believe is her name, and she swears he is coming to DC next season. She says Eddie and Shanahan still talk once a week on the telephone, and that Royal isn't happy in Denver. Supposedly Shanahan is very fond of Royal. So we'll see.

Interesting McD5

Royal's last truly productive season was Shanahan's last in Denver. he had nearly 1000 yards and 5 TDs. He hasn't done much since then but you never know. Should come at a reasonable price in free agency. He's a local guy too so maybe he wants to come home to play.

Count me among the guys who do not believe you need a "#1" receiver (whatever that is) on your team. Especially not if you have a legit franchise QB.

Solid talent in your receiving corps? Sure. But you don't need a superstar.

Agreed. Peyton made a lot of average receivers look great. Rivers does that out on San Diego (well, not this year so much). A legit franchise QB can cover for so many other deficiencies week in and week out.

You're a gambling man, I get that. I don't think trading away picks is wise for an unknown. It's just a gamble/risk I would not take.

My point is...

I get your point. I understand the risk you guys are willing to take and it baffles me with the history of failures at the #1 pick of the draft over the years, much less QB's that were chosen in the top 5. There is an overwhelming failure rate at that position to risk valuable assets, like 1st and 2nd round picks, to gamble on a QB who looks great in college, but who has never seen the speed and looks an NFL defense is about to throw at him.

Well, seems to me, drafting a guy who is agile, has an ultra quick release, and can throw it accurately even when he doesn't have his feet set is protection against just that El, not a detriment.

All draft picks are gambles, and the higher the pick, the greater the risk.

Hard to argue with the boom or bust concerns - but that's true no matter where you draft a QB. Because it's possible to find a star later and a bust earlier doesn't mean in any individual case one shouldn't pull the trigger with a high pick.

You'd just better be sure 'he's the guy'.

I guess we will agree to disagree. I see the intellgence and the athletic ability of RG3 and I think he is worth the gamble. The fact of the matter is I personally think Shanahan will agree with you. I don't think he will give up two number ones for a player. He will see one these guys at the senior bowl and think he that he has found the hidden treasure in the draft.

Shanahan's job depends on finding a QB this off-season either through the draft or through free agency. I would think another 6-10 season without some sort of light at the end of the tunnel would probably be the end of him here in DC. There would be a lot of people who would drive him to the airport.

You mean like Michael Vick? ;)
