The Front Office: Adam Peters and Roster Construction

Certainly don’t advocate being reckless with late summer trades, but it would be really good to see AP make a couple of shrewd moves to address the roster issues we currently have. Get ahead of the cuts and negotiate some moves.

- I don’t give him credit for Daniels. Everyone was picking either Maye or Daniels. As I said in another thread, it worries me he had McCarthy instead of Maye in his draft rankings. If we had had the #3 pick in the 24 draft and had taken McCarthy, he would’ve already been fired
Eh. I mean, do you give Polin credit for drafting Peyton Manning? It was the consensus pick, but he pulled the trigger.

- Newton is not only a bust but he was also a bit of a luxury pick given we already had Payne and Allen on the team. Also, if they wanted to go DT, the next two taken were T’Vondre Sweat and Braden Fiske. Both guys are starting DTs in this league
I don't think there are such things as luxury picks. You pick the guy who is highest on your board. Newton was a bad pick. I think it's as simple as that. Injury and ineffectiveness. And he probably is done in Washington. He probably lasts through next year's training camp, but he won't be guaranteed anything and he's easy and cheap to cut.

- Sainristil is currently a bust where things stand. This is a “what have you done lately for me league” and he was one of the league’s worst corners last season. For the record, in the trade back, everyone brings up DeJean but AP the next two picks after DeJean were Kool Aid (a legit starting CB) and Lassiter (Pro Bowl CB).
I don't agree here. I think he played well his rookie year. Last year, the entire defense was broken due to bad decisions, injuries and horrific coaching. Before I pass judgement on him, I want to see him play this season in what appears to be a better situation. I'm not entirely sure peak Deion Sanders would have looked good in our situation last year.

- Sinnott is currently a bust. Even if he ends up being productive, when you reach for a TE graded by consensus as a rd 3-5 pick, that guy better be a starter
I have said over and over, the consensus media draftnik board is just that, a media consensus draftnik board that relies on 1/3 of possible information, and has no input from actual teams. Relying on it is a meaningless exercise. You can find plenty of places where guys go above consensus and are great, and go after consensus and are great, and go before and they suck, and go after and they suck.

There is no such thing as a reach. That term was spoken into existence by Mel Kiper's hairdoo.

I agree he's currently a bust, but I put the bust on position match more than anything. He was a bad pick for Kliff's scheme. Peters should have known that. So don't disagree it was a bad pick.

- For Coleman, yes injury played a role last year but he lost his starting job to Paul after his poor play in the GB game. If he can play an average starting LT for a least 3/4ths of the games this year, he is a hit
He beat Paul out in camp for the LG job. But he played through injury in weeks 1 and 2, and that's why he lost his job.

He needs to stay healthy.

- You call Luke an elite KR but is he really providing unique value? Deebo and Ekeler were also both elite kick returners here.
I think if he continues to excel at ST, kick returning and such, he's got a good on the roster.

I also think the coaching staff didn't do him any favors in the way they developed him at WR. They asked him to learn all the positions at once, and specialize in nothing. He has the tools to be very good. I have been saying they need to just stick him somewhere and not keep moving him around. He was doing better as a receiver last year until he got hurt.

- Magee is an oft injured backup linebacker who was thought of so highly that AP decided to bring a starter in in FA in Chenal to pair with Luvu and then drafted Styles too. He is still on the roster so not a miss.
We'll see if he makes the final 53. My guess is yes. But he's going to have to play ST's in order to be active. I think he stayed more healthy last year and I don't think he's been banged up this year. But I don't really count 6th round picks when looking back at a draft. If they hit, whoopee. Most are out of the league in less than 3 years.

- JJB is a hit for a 7th round pick. Got some production out of him
Yeah, that was a good pick.

Big year for the 2025 class but it definitely isn’t one that makes you go wow. Bottom line is one major reason the fans were excited about AP is because SF absolutely killed it in Day 3 during his tenure. There is no Kittle, DJ Reed, Hufanga, etc that looks like it is coming out of 2024 or 2025 Day 3. Hopefully, Josephs can go hit a Pro Bowl caliber level down the road from this class
I'd argue Bill could be that guy. I think JBB is really good for a late round pick, and we'll see what happens with Josephs.

I'm more interested in seeing what the 2024 draft does. If they have to cut 4 of the 6 2nd/3rd round picks next year, that's going to be a real disappointment.
