Rebuilding or Retooling?

Well, my question is how long is this supposed to take? It use to be, a coach had 5 yrs, now it's 3 yrs. Is it even a viable option to think you can totally rebuild in today's game? It seems like if you're not blessed with a QB your chances are slim.

Bye the way, I agree with both of you KD and Bd, but i can't help but think we we're in position to perform better than we have, especially if it wasn't for injuries.

We also have 3 guy's Shanahan, Haslett and Allen who were all kicked to the curb by the rest of the league, and i like these guys also.

I believe Snyder has this franchise in such a viscous cycle we'll never see the end of it.

This is a far more serious question than the Alberta fiasco. Shan-Allen have essentially wasted a year, believing they could get more out of the talent on the team than they were able to do. So if they are given the current 3 year window that seems popular, they now have to rebuild in 2 years, which seems unlikely at best.

Unfortunately, I suspect they know this, and I worry they will make win-now moves in order to bolster their win total to look better to the owner and fans, which will result in more of the same purgatory we have experienced for the past 20 years.

That's a depressing thought on a Friday.

We are in the curious dilemma of never truly reaching the magnitude of 'suckage' that screams 'total blow-up'. I thought we'd reached that level Zorn's final year, but apparently Shanahan felt otherwise. I would argue that it was that assessment which will have been his biggest miscalculation of 2010, not AH, the 3-4, or benching McNabb. We needed to go young, young, young, across the board and we didn't. I really thought we would find a way to get Bradford to start that process.

I think Shanahan now knows we have a lot of aging players on the decline now. I think we'll see a shift in course in the off-season. I hope we do.

I hope so too, Boone. But the fact that Shanahan miscalculated so poorly last off season has me worried, on a LOT of different levels.

First, his talent evaluations. Did he really think we were that close to making a run? Coming off 4-12? Why else would he bring in McNabb?

Second, is he going to be able to start over with a youth movement which is tantamount to admitting he made a mistake? Doesn't seem like humility is a strong suit.

Lastly, as I stated before, he has lost a year. There is no way to get that time back. I think Bulldog said in another thread that he lost a year of talent evaluation as well. We're talking about blowing it up and going in an entirely new direction. Does he think he has the time to do that? And by time, I mean will Snyder give him enough of it, and/or does he want to stick around that long?

This year has the potential to be far more damaging than we realize, long term, imo.

All great questions Goal...I have never believed McNabb was 'the plan'. I think Bradford was - that we thought we could pull it off and ultimately miscalculated. McNabb was just viewed as an upgrade over Campbell (and I still think he is, mediocre 2010 season or not). We'll know more when we see if the Redskins keep McNabb here. I think he has all the time he wants IF the Redskins are progressing. That's the problem with this year in a nutshell, we walked right down the middle of the highway, neither getting significantly younger, or adding enough FA talent to make a difference. We treaded water essentially.

I'm as clueless about what the 3-5 year plan is as you guys are. I just don't believe McNabb was ever viewed as the Redskins QB for the Shanahan era - I could be wrong about that, but I have always felt he must just be a transitional guy until we can find a franchise QB in the draft. But I'll confess, I am not certain what the grand plan really is. As Bulldog has rightly pointed out, there's been a lack of consistency all along that makes it tough to know where we are going.

thats a great point, my biggest worry when we hired shanny was that he would bail before we got this turned around, after all he has a legacy already. I was genuinely surprised at how bad the offence has been, people are blaming the oline, the same people who bash zorn (who because of injuries had a far worse Oline btw) but frankly im with some of you guys on this, Shanny has refused to adjust his system, how long did it take before he started using 2 TE's? something that even casual fans knew we had?

this was a lost year, we learned nothing about the 3-4 because we only have maybe 3 guys we will keep to try running it.

we learned almost nothing about our young guys thus far and we still havent started bringing in guys off of other teams prs.

am I the only one who thinks that looking at the good teams and looking where they are deep and then taking a shot on a practice roster guy who may just be caught in a numbers game isnt a bad idea?

for instance, the steelers are solid at LB, they even have depth so if they have a pr guy at LB we should be bringing him in right now. do the same thing with every position, ffs id rather have a guy who has a chance at getting better than a 35 year old collecting his last ganme cheques.

I don't think you will see McNabb back in 2011.

This trade was a mistake. The Redskins should have just been starting the process of rebuilding to the point where the trade for a veteran like McNabb would be contemplated 2-3 years down the road perhaps.

But you don't get the veteran first and then try to build a 45 man active roster around him.

Besides, what's in it for McNabb? He can get paid elsewhere and be on a playoff contender.

The Redskins will look to deal Haynesworth and McNabb.

One move for Haynesworth is long overdue.

The move for McNabb merely corrects a mistake that should not have been made in the first place.

I share your viewpoint Bulldog. Although I'll confess I have never understood the thought process in acquiring McNabb in the first place, I do credit the Redskins with building in an escape clause in their extension.

I'll confess I'll be surprised if they jettison McNabb after this season, but I'll be glad if they do. I think we need to blow it up in a meaningful way. And as you've said, even if McNabb does play better in coming years, by the time the 'rebuild' is done, he'd be geriatric.

I disagree with us trading Mcnabb with a caveat, if we find a vet who Shanny thinks will fit his system better or if a stud rookie comes our way, then I could see us trading him, but for now he is just a place holder who will take the lumps as our revamped Oline gells (and we had damn well better be signing and drafting several Olinemen!) all along we needed a placeholder to take the lumps as we revamped an oline, its tood bad we overpaid for the one we have.

we need to build our lines up, I still dont think the AH signing was terrible given the reasons we signed him and given that the reason he is a bust this season is because we changed to a scheme that doesnt fit him and many of our problems after that stemmed from that. if we had a good defence and were winning games? Boone is absolutely right, then everything just feel better. the same reason I dont feel AC is a bust, he simply doesnt fit the system.

ok...I have been highly critical of McNabb...but will argue on his behalf:

- he throws a nice deep ball....too bad we don't have an o-line that can block long enough for a deep play. too bad we have no money receivers.

- he has experience and...provided time....can make the right decisions

- he needs to learn the new offense

one piece of confusion...so Shanahan the elder believes in a running game centric offense. how does that square with our defense? seems like a mismatch at this point.

so....the consensus is we have many more dreadful seasons ahead. how wonderful.
