2012 FA qb's and draft strategy

Henry, I'm not saying I would make that trade either but if getting Luck meant a run of NFL relevance similar to what the Colts have experienced for the last 10 years, would it be worth it then?

7 straight 12+ win seasons
9 straight 10+ win seasons
8 Division titles
2 Super Bowl appearances
1 Super Bowl win

Still not worth it?

That is a HUGE 'if'.

The only way I'd consider such a high price for a QB is if his being 'the next Manning' was a foregone conclusion. And even then those wonderful stats you posted aren't automatic either, seeing as the Colts DID have their next four first rounders, which they used to draft Ed James, Julius Peppers and Reggie Wayne.

If you whiff on that pick, and by whiff I mean of the guy turns out to be merely competent rather than Top Five of All Time, you're setting your team back a decade. Whiffing on one first rounder is bad. Whiffing on four ... Suck for 2020! :)

Yes, we are out of the top 5 right mow BUT this team is trending down steadily now with Beck at qb and in the past week teams like Miami, St. Louis and Denver all won.

Those 3 wins may be all we get.

I had predicted 7 wins but that now looks high.

May be no more than 5 or 6 best case scenario.

Scary realization: Tim Tebow is a better NFL quarterback than John Beck. His record on a bad team is now 3-3 including last year.

As Doc Walker said we need to find additional options.

sign flynn draft one of the top young guys and get a wr in fa, draft and sign every good ol available.

This is what I was thinking. Matt Flynn could be a good addition to come in and have a shot to start while we take one of the young guns coming out of college.

luck is about a sure thing as ryan leaf as of now. you never know what you will get when it comes to a pro QB. im not going to cry over it if we dont get him and end up with one of the other QBs mentioned in this thread.

This is why I am against trading multiple 1s for him, if there was a guarantee, id be ok with it lol. Heath Shuler was a "sure thing" back a few years ago too.

I would trade for Matt Flynn and then draft Ryan Tannhille. Grossman and Beck need to be gone. Flynn should be a good QB and we can develop Tannhille, who should be a 2nd round pick. Strong arm, great mobility and I think fits the system really well.

By the way, if we pick high enough in round one I would have no problem drafting Matt Kalil LT out of USC and move Trent Williams to RT. Another option is Morris Claiborne CB out of LSU.

We also need at least two Interior Lineman taken before round seven.

Flynn is a FA at the end of this year 76, but yeah...we should give him a shot over either of the Qb's we have on the roster.

I was reading some stuff that a few insiders posted in the last couple of days - here are their thoughts.

Players are disgusted with Beck, but they know he will be the QB the rest of the way. They also realize that QB will be a target in round one.

The "insiders" often speculate, just like JLC did. And I seriously doubt they know anything about any draft plans in any year. It's not like Shanahan calls them on the phone before the draft.

You're right, I didn't know that. That's even better we won't have to give up a draft pick.

It is still a pretty big gamble to sign him. Let's face it he has looked good when given the chance to play, however he has done so in a great offense with a lot of weapons. It is a chance I would take.

With the FA QB's out there he has the biggest up side. If we solidify our offensive line, he would have chance. Remember, last year when he came in against NE and looked so good, that offense was beaten up, their OL and receivers.

Sign him, draft a rook and keep Rex then let them compete. I know I know, many want to dump Rex altogether, but he would be a solid backup to Flynn giving the rookie a year with a clip board. I think that would be ideal.

If we do draft a future franchise QB with a top 10 pick, not sure how many young FA prospects are going to be pining to come to DC to hold down the position for 1-2 years. I guess I could be wrong there, but I don't see us as being all that attractive a destination under those circumstances.

And I think what you guys are ignoring is that it would be better to leave a guy like Beck or Grossman in there, who at least know the Shanahan's offense, rather than bring in a guy with a couple year's experience who has to learn it from scratch. I don't want to watch another season with either of them behind center either, but it may be necessary unless Shanahan wanted to start a rookie at QB, something I just can't see him doing.

I understand what you are saying there, but I think that we sign Matt Flynn and give him a full offseason I think he would be more effective than Grossman or Beck. Plus signing him might be willing to get a free agent WR in camp. I just think he has a better skill set. I could understand bringing back Grossman if our Quarterback we draft is really raw and needs quiet a bit of time to develop. Example Flynn would be the starter, Grossman could be the backup and Tannehill could be the 3rd QB. However, I would imagine that by the time the draft comes in Tannehill could end up being a low 1st round pick and they probably would just have him backup Flynn or whoever they bring in.

Last season for the most part was all about the defense and I think this upcoming years offense will be all about the offense. I say we sign a QB and draft one, not to mention fix the O-line and pick up a veteran WR. I could see up drafting or signing another Corner or maybe Inside LB but that might be it.
