A Burgundy and Gold Obsession: Stranger Things

Filling out my ‘Crystal Ball Pool’ bracket this morning, it struck me how patently ridiculous it is making guesses about what will ultimately transpire over the course of an NFL season. Of course, that’s precisely what Vegas oddsmakers and foolhardy fans on message boards do.

Our Washington Commanders are currently 20-1 favorites to win Super Bowl LX on February 8th, 2026.

Those are long odds for sure, but they make Washington the 8th most likely to win an NFL Championship – and it’s just Year 2 of the Adam Peters/Dan Quinn/Jayden Daniels era.

I don’t know if there have been quicker or more impressive turnarounds by an NFL team – ever.

But can Washington get to a Super Bowl – and win it – in 2025?

The 2024 season was special. On the strength of one of the greatest rookie QB seasons in NFL history, a new but talented corps of coaches eked out 12 incredible wins in the regular season. 8 of those 12 wins were by less than a touchdown. In addition to riding Jayden Daniels spectacular performances, the team won in large part by gambling big, going for it on 4th down 23 times. They successfully converted 20 of those 23 4th down attempts, for an astounding 87.5% conversion rate, best in the NFL.

Will Dan Quinn and Kliff Kingsbury continue this uber-aggressive style of play in 2025? A lot of NFL evaluators believe this aggressiveness was rooted in a ‘what do we have to lose?’ mentality – pointing to a first season with almost complete coaching turnover, and 60+ % roster turnover. Having caught ‘lightning in a bottle’ with the surprisingly veteran-like performance by Daniels under center, and finding themselves in the thick of playoff contention, why not throw caution to the wind and ‘go for it’?

But having observed Quinn and the rest of the new Washington coaching staff for a year, there is another possibility.

This gambling, aggressive, risk-friendly style of play is who the Commanders are going to be.

It wasn’t a gimmick. It wasn’t a ‘we’ve got nothing to lose’ strategy. It wasn’t because it was the only hope to win. It was, and I believe will continue to be, this team’s identity.

Anyone. Anywhere. Any time. This was one of our 2024 Washington mantras. Sure – its coach speak. It’s something that looks great painted on a locker room wall. But for the rebuilt and reinvigorated Commanders, it means something.

In playground vernacular it screams one thing. We ain’t skeered.

And in 2024 Washington played fearlessly. They had no business, in any rational world, winning 12 games. New Front Office, new coaches, new roster, rookie QB, in a tough NFC East division. 12 wins just isn’t possible, and yet not only did we watch them happen, we saw the Commanders edge out a very talented Tampa Bay team on the road in the Wildcard game, and then absolutely throttle and embarrass the Detroit Lions at their house to get to the NFC Championship game.

Again – it’s a crazy NFL universe where something like what we saw in 2024 can happen.

Washington is inarguably better today than it was at any time last season. Setting aside the ongoing Terry McLaurin drama, the team has added some major offensive weapons in acquiring Deebo Samuels and drafting rookies Jacory Croskey-Merritt and Jaylin Lane. The team has also significantly beefed up its protection in front of Jayden Daniels, with a massive trade for Laremy Tunsil and the drafting of Joe Conerly Jr. If 2nd year players Ben Sinnott and Luke McCaffrey are able to step up in season two, Washington may have a fearsome offense.

On defense, Washington drafted a great corner Trey Amos and added safety Will Harris to the defensive backfield and bolstered the DL with the signing of Javon Kinlaw. The late addition of Von Miller will provide the situational pass rusher Washington so desperately needed in 2024.

Perhaps most importantly, Washington has retained all of its coaches and is poised to take another step up in Year 2 of the Jayden Daniels era.

Some will argue Washington may find it challenging to repeat the successes of 2024. Perhaps Jayden Daniels will suffer that oh-so-familiar ‘sophomore slump’ even great QBs seem to experience quite often. Teams won’t be surprised in 2024, neither by Jayden Daniels capabilities, nor by the Kliff Kingsbury offense. Nor will teams take the field vs. these Commanders and not take them seriously. The Commanders put the NFL on notice last season. We are for real. On a good day, we can beat any team in the NFL, and we will play you tough, aggressively, and fearlessly. And many will confidently predict Washington cannot repeat it’s 20/23 4th down conversion feat.

Battling the (ugh) defending Super Bowl Champion Philadelphia Eagles (I just threw up in my mouth a little) for NFC East division supremacy, Washington will also contend with an always game (at least against us) Dallas Cowboys squad, and an improving and pesky Giants team.

Can Washington win 12 games or more again in 2025, get to the playoffs, and make noise there when they do?

Yep.

There’s something magical going on in DC. It’s not just Adam Peters, or Dan Quinn and company, it’s not even just Jayden Daniels. This franchise and its battered and beleaguered fanbase has been reborn. And in 2025, the Washington Commanders feel to me like a team of destiny.

It’s been a long time since I felt like I could muster the courage to be a homer.

Washington is going to win the NFC East in 2025, tear through the playoffs, and get to and win Super Bowl LX.
