Burner’s Burning Questions – Week Two

To put it mildly, that was not a lot of fun. As we look back and answer some questions about the second game of the 2012 season, it goes without saying that week two was a disaster for the Redskins. Let’s get right to it.

Q1: The loss of Adam Carriker and Brian Orakpo obviously hurts. Can the replacements take up the slack?
A: They will need to do just that – take up the slack. Markus White was brought back to the team and Doug Worthington was promoted from the practice squad. Both are talented prospects and could provide the kind of spark that is needed on defense.

Q2: The rough play and hits after the whistle had blown were numerous. Is this the kind of play that we can expect until the league referees return?
A: The Redskins-Rams game was not the only game to have such activity. Many games were played under these adverse conditions and the NFL needs to send a message that it will not be tolerated. After the week three games, we may have our answer.

Q3: Robert Griffin, III complained about the rough play. Should he focus on the game instead or is his plea a legitimate gripe?
A: It is both. His complaint is legitimate and it would be a huge PR hit for the league if a marquee quarterback was lost for the season due to illegal activity. His voice should be heard, but the ultimate focus should be on the game and to put all distractions aside.

Q4: Defensive coordinator Jim Haslett is under fire for a multiplicity of reasons. Is his job in jeopardy to the point where he could be released soon?
A: This is highly unlikely, but he could take the fall after the season is over. Coach Shanahan does not want to risk losing any kind of order during the season. However, we may see more play calling from defensive assistant Raheem Morris.

Q5: With that in mind, will Morris be the eventual replacement for Haslett after the season?
A: Rumors have been running strong for several months about such a scenario, but it is way too early to speculate about this kind of move. Obviously, if the defense continues to struggle, Haslett will probably be the fall guy after this season.

That is all the questions and answers for this week. See you again next Friday.
