Do the Commanders have trade bait?

Maybe it's all of Boone's worm talk, probably it's my concern about center, but this morning's thought was do we have any backup players that another team would want? Could we trade a receiver or a linebacker for someone's backup center? Do we have an edge or a D Tackle that someone would trade for us with? For a while, I semi-seriously wanted to trade Payne for a wide receiver. Now, I do think of Payne as a starter and probably our best defensive tackle, but he's going on his last year and I don't see us re-signing him, so is he worth more in trade than he is on the field? Now, I'd want more than a reserve o lineman for him, but could you talk me into Payne for a center and a third round pick? Maybe.

Wide receiver is particularly strange right now. We've gone from having a plethora of 3rd and 4th receivers and a bad receiving room to maybe having to cut a receiver we like. If we like them will anyone else? Clearly, anyone could have signed Dyami, Burks, or Van Jefferson and we got them for cheap so you think they'd have little value. Would Shanahan (who loves trading for Washington and has gotten beaten up at receiver) become intrigued with the idea of another McCaffrey on the roster? If so, what would his value be in terms of a player in trade?

For me, I think I'm more interested in player trades right now then trading a player for draft picks, but feel free to go the other way if you want. If someone offered a 2nd for Payne would that be enough? A fifth for McCaffrey? Six firsts for Daniels?
 
I think there are a lot of barriers to trades at this point in the season. First of all, teams that may be eyeballing a fringe player are probably going to say 'let's just see if they release him'. If you are talking an established player, like the Payne example, what would the point of a trade now be? Player for player swaps rarely happen because it has to be a near perfect scenario where both teams are getting an upgrade at a position of need. Unless you are getting a player, what would be the point of a trade right before the regular season since you are likely weakening your own roster. Picks are nice but they don't help you now.

I do think it's possible we could try and do a trade if we have a critical need (like we could at center if Allegretti can't get healthy) if a team has a very good group at a certain position (like the Texans have at center).
 
Quan Martin could be one to watch. I think Standig has mentioned this on his pod. If he plays most of the game tonight that could be a tell
 
Boone I agree, but if there are a couple bottom end roster guys and another team doesn't want to bid for them, it could happen. But I think it would have to be a young guy, recent draft pick.

I don't think we're trading any starter or primary backup type of guy.

However, there is one spot which I think is interesting:

WR: Do they trade McCaffery and keep one of Burks, Van Jefferson or Diyami? Maybe to SF with all of their WR injuries? If they like what they have at the back end of the WR room with the vets, maybe they trade McCaffery. Luke's brother is already there. SF could have a full set.

If Armstrong wasn't coming off an ACL and a suspension, I would gaze that way as well. But he is so he would have no market.

The only other spot I can think of would be LB. They have Chenal, Magee and Medrano as backups. Luvu and Styles are the starters. Because they're playing a 3-4, the edge guys are taking the OLB spots, and that leaves a crunch at ILB. I can't see all three getting to the final roster. Maybe Magee or Medrano has a market as a young, fast, talented guy who's just stuck behind other players? Maybe? Probably not.

All of the other folks who could be on a roster but might get cut are all guys who there are 10 of those guys who are going to get cut, so there's no reason to trade for them. That would apply to any of the WRs, RBs, etc.

The most likely scenario is nothing happens. But, eh, you never know.
 
IMO the move is to trade a guy that's NOT on the bubble who has value... provided you think you can backfill the spot with a younger cheaper player.

I don't know if we have a situation where this would apply, but it's the one that deeper teams exploit. Trading from the absolute bottom of a position never really amounts to much unless it's a swap of roster bubble for roster bubble type of players.

Usually guys you’re looking to trade don’t play, to ensure health, right? Teams have years of tape on him (and whatever in-house evaluation that makes them think he’s salvageable, in this hypothetical) so one more preseason game isn’t going to move the needle

I think he means a lot of playing time in preseason would tell us about his place on our depth chart and whether or not he’s on the roster bubble more so than his trade value.
 
Jerzhan Newton and a draft pick to Tampa for unhappy Vita Vea? We would have to give him a new contract but he fits the new D much better than Newton.

Newton is worth extremely little in that transaction, you’d basically be trading a premium pick or two. Probably way more than you’d want to. I’m always open to checking in on trade opportunities, but we do need to start drafting our own stars, generally.

Yeah this. Before Dotson got traded he played around 60% snaps of the preseason game against the Jets
 
Barber and Cowart played better than Newton this week, so he is easily replaceable. He has very little value. Some team may take a shot, but won’t get much in return. We need him to flash during the next two games to have a chance of getting anything better than a late 7th round pick.
 
I really hope there's a team out there with too many interior linemen who are desperate for a receiver. I know we can't expect to get much for Burks, Van Jefferson, or Dyami, but surely there's a team out there that thinks they might be worth their back up center. Center is so undervalued in this league.

At this point, I'd be okay with losing any of those receivers (Besides, Bradley is trying his hardest to become my preseason crush.)

We're going to cut a WR this year who's either going to be claimed to another team's 53 or at the very least, will get elevated from a practice squad.

Maybe 2. The depth of that room was never the question, the question was always the top of the room.

It would be ideal to flip a WR for a C. Doubt it happens, but it would be great.
