The 2026 Free Agency Thread

I can't believe I missed the Socrates derail!!!

Also, do we need a new thread debating which philosopher would make the best head coach?

Thank goodness we filled one of the great joles in the league. No one wants a big jole on their team.

(Okay, I'm the last person who should joke about online typos, but morning brain insisted.)

Agree with Ben and ditto Finlay making a similar point. I don't love the work Peters has done, don't hate it either. But hated the approach of putting the team on Jayden's back -- its not the way to develop a young QB.

A year ago, the Commanders’ limitations at receiver were shockingly obvious. Beyond McLaurin’s holdout, the injury-prone Noah Brown was already injured. Recent draft selections Luke McCaffrey and Jaylin Lane remained largely projections. Older veterans on the roster and practice squad offered experience but little reason to believe they could consistently boost the offense.

The room looked thin then, and it proved to be just that.

The appeal isn't simply what the Montgomery County, Md., native, Good Counsel High School alum and former University of Maryland standout adds. It's also what he prevents.

When paired with McLaurin, Diggs provides Daniels with another proven target capable of punishing defenses that focus extra attention on Washington’s No. 1 receiver.

If McLaurin misses time again, the Commanders now have someone who can approximate the responsibilities of a top option rather than forcing an entire committee into roles they may not be suited for.

Should Father Time finally decide to wrestle Diggs into submission, Washington can pivot to its other viable options.

Whatever the exact sequence of events that led to the decisions made — and not made — this offseason shows a front office trying to solve problems before they become season-defining ones.

That’s what good organizations do.

And perhaps the clearest sign that Adam Peters is growing into the role isn’t simply the players he’s acquiring. It’s the problems he’s becoming unwilling to leave unsolved.

Bullock

One of the first things that stood out to me when watching Diggs film from last year wasn’t the route running or the catching ability. I’ll certainly get to those things in this post, but the thing that jumped out to me most was his ability to make himself available. Diggs consistently showed the awareness to know when his route was dead and how to adjust or go off-script to make himself available. It’s a veteran savviness that made Zach Ertz such a great target for Jayden Daniels the past two years.

Jayden is going to love throwing to this years technical route runners with Terry, Diggs and Williams (and Jefferson if he makes the cut but is on the outside looking in right now)

Yeah, Ertz gets crapped on some from this fan base but he clearly was a target that Jayden really liked -- as Logan has said even at this advanced age Ertz was an elite route runner. Remember the playoff game against Philly -- the WRs were blanketed, it was a one more show, Ertz.

Adding someone like Diggs who is a savvy veteran route runner is tailor made.

I've also wondered whether making fans happy impacts decision-making? I'm not going to argue that someone like Adam Peters looks to fan opinion to guide him 99% of the time. But the concern over WR2 and their inability to fill that void this offseason was loud with AP getting the blame for the teams failure to improve there. I am sure that even someone like AP hears the noise and feels the criticism. It may well have given him the 'nudge' to get this deal done.

Could be. His burgundy and gold lenses may have been filtering out a little of obvious (to all of our trained eyes 🤣 )

I had a similar thought, but regarding Harris hearing the criticisms. Not that I think he’d push AP to do something, but rather talking with AP about the position and then green lighting the (guaranteed) money. This is assuming a spending cap/limitation though, which may or may not have existed… so I could be way off base.

One advantage we have with Harris as an owner is that while he is a newbie to the NFL, he is a vet sports franchise owner. He's been through pretty much everything there is to go through with his basketball, hockey, and (I think) soccer teams so I don't know he's as likely to be quickly swayed by fan sentiment. His history with his main business and other teams suggests he believes in the long, slow rebuild.

The team is better this morning than it was this time yesterday.

If we were going to bring someone in this was the option I wanted.

Yet, today, I find myself less happy than I thought I would be.

Not sure how involved he was, but Harris and one of his major business partners owned ~4% of the Steelers as a minority share owner from 2020-2024. Not surprising as most new majority share NFL owners start by owning smaller shares in one franchise or another, but he had dabbled and gotten his feet wet with how the league operates already. Legacy franchise, but one of its more disappointing modern stretches, who knows if he was really even involved after the initial investment, other than networking. But not a total newbie

Ain’t that the way

The first game where Diggs is the leading receiver and has 8 receptions for 105 yards and a TD will fix that.

Could be that the move is exciting on paper but we've yet to see anything on the field. Probably could be said about the entire team:

The confusion of Jones' blitz schemes are exciting on paper, but
The use of motion and multiple sets is exciting, but
The new crop of free agents are exciting, but

Diggs was the last piece (well, the one we griped most about anyway) so now that we actually assembled the engine we are eager to see if it will run.

For me I am optimistic about the season. to me Diggs was the missing ingredient aside from adding a veteran center.

The only overhang for me about the season.

A. While i don't mind ignoring the national media in all its forms they've been right more than wrong about this team over the years -- granted it wasn't too hard betting against Washington -- and most of them think the team sucks. Now I think they are wrong. But lol I've been wrong before rejecting their thesis.

B. Tough division

C. Tough schedule

For me its about the start, I reject the idea of its OK to just hang in there in the first half and go on a run in the 2nd half. The division is too stacked and the NFC is too loaded for that IMO. They got a new scheme, many new players -- shock and awe just like in 2012 where they beat the Saints on the road. Beat either the Eagles or Dallas on the road, I expect them to take one of those games. Beat Seattle traveling across country for a 1 pm game. Beat the Colts in London. Beat the upstart Giants. now, you got a season. It's possible IMO, will see.
