This idea Stevens has a stronger leg than Moody is definitely the prevailing wisdom, and there is some limited evidence for that, though I wouldn’t call it conclusive.

Moody’s career long is 59 yards in college and 57 in the pros. Stevens career long is 58 in college. So both can hit from 55+ and neither has hit from 60+.

However, there is some difference in the number of attempts and overall accuracy from that range, so maybe that’s the reason. Stevens was 12-19 (63%) from 50+ yards in college. Moody was 4-10 from 50+ in college and is 8-14 from 50+ in the pros (so 50% overall but trending up).

I do agree with the sentiment that NFL kicking has evolved to a point where you expect a guy to be better than 60% from 50-59 yards though, so hopefully we can get that sorted in this competition.

He's been well below average at every distance for his career. Last year, he performed well from 40+ but missed 3 out of 15 bunnies. We know he does not have a strong leg and I'd call it below average, too. At this point, I think he's just a dude AP is familiar with that is still young and theoretically could improve, but probably won't.

The entire board should be rooting hard for Drew Stevens.

Edit to add: Those NFL averages are for the last three seasons, which span Moody's career. I relied on ChatGPT for the data but it's good at that sort of thing.

Stevens was 78-95 (82%) in college, Moody was 69-84 (82%) in college.

I won’t go through all of them, but the thing that stands out with Moody is relatively meager numbers from 50+. The concern with Steven is being below 70% from 40-49 yards.

Also worth noting Moody’s pro career, which you detailed above. His percentage has dropped some (78%), but seems to have improved last year (83%).

I think they are both pretty close overall and expect a good competition. May the best man win.

He was 52-60 (87%) his last two years of college. He made that 59-yard kick, multiple game winning kicks, and was kicking from 65+ in practice. He also won major awards (Consensus All-American, 2nd team All-American, Lou Groza award). So there were reasons he was drafted high.

His pro career has been up and down—bad enough to be cut by the team that drafted him—hence the skepticism, but he bounced back nicely last year, and he is still young.

Good call, let’s break this down too.

20-29
Moody: 21/22 (96%)
Stevens: 28/29 (97%)

30-39
Moody: 31/35 (89%)
Stevens: 16/18 (89%)

40-49
Moody: 13/17 (77%)
Stevens: 20/29 (69%)

50-59
Moody: 4/10 (40%)
Stevens: 12/19 (62%)

My first thought is, I don’t really care much what Moody did in college. He’s been a pro for three seasons but it is another data point.

What stands out to me is how many more 40+ yard kicks Stevens attempted; 48 versus 27 for Moody. That speaks to coaching confidence IMO. There could certainly be team dynamics at play, but both of them went to big 10 schools and had a similar environment. And 12/19 from 50+ in college is really strong.

Stevens wasn’t great in the 40s but he did get better. 8/14 the first two seasons and 12/15 the last two. 80% the last two seasons is close to NFL average.

From camp reports, the beat guys all seem consistent in saying the ball sounds different off Stevens foot and hits the net much higher up on the long ones than Moody. I really don’t think there’s much debate about who has the bigger leg.

For my money, the only question is whether the rookie can handle the pressure, which is obviously a HUGE consideration. The most important actually. Based on all available evidence though, there’s really no reason anyone should be rooting for Moody to win this job. We should want the rook to take the job and run with it.

One receiver standing out in practice is Luke McCaffrey. The third-year pro has consistently worked with the first team in 11-personnel alongside Terry McLaurin and Treylon Burks. In Tuesday’s session, a quiet one for the offense overall, McCaffrey was part of two long gainers, both on throws from Jayden Daniels.

On the first, the 6-foot-2 target streaked up the seam from the slot, and Daniels hit him in stride for what would have been a 20-plus-yard gain. Near the end of practice, Daniels ripped a throw downfield that found McCaffrey around the 20. The receiver raced into the end zone, much to the delight of Commanders season-ticket holders in attendance.

Grant Paulsen says he had his best practice in years.

Luke McCaffrey had his best practice of the week and maybe his best practice I've seen in a couple years. Not just in terms of volume of catches -- he had several of them -- but also how open he was getting. He beat Mikey Sainristil a couple times, which is a good sign.

I’m really encouraged by Daniels, the offense, our receiving weapons. Maybe I was too pessimistic. I still want Diggs though.

If Luke winds up actually being good, that draft class could look better than we thought.
 
WIth Good-Jones looking so poor and Allegretti out, do we know if they Gublin or eve Trey Hill get any snaps with the starters?
 
I hope so. From afar, it sounds like their ramping up Good-Jones' reps in advance of the preseason game. I'm guessing they anticipate him starting and don't want to see the QB get killed and they're hoping more reps will at least make him passable.

I don't know if he is bad as we keep hearing. If he is, I think he could be a cut candidate.
 
I think my biggest worry about Alegretti as a starter is that I think he maxes out as a C player. Now, I think you can get away with a C if everyone around him is strong, but if your starter is a C that probably means your backups are Ds and Fs. That's unfair to the Goblin, but a front office should always be conscious of the starter and the backup.

Why is he a 'C'? He'd better not be a 'C' - because we let a 'B' starter walk for nothing.

Allegretti was a pure center before he got to the pro's - it's not like he's a project, he just hasn't been asked to play that position. He is big, strong, smart player who has missed just 2 games in 6 seasons. He apparently sees the defense much better than Biadasz did and is an outstanding communicator to the OL and QB. None of that would seem to indicate a 'C' player imho.

If he's a 'C' player, Peters and Quinn should both be fired.
 
I'm, calling him a C based on past performance. He has been a marginal starter/high end back up most of his career. That sounds like a C to me especially as he has never really shined for us. His best games have been solid and workmanlike. Now, we know more about him as a guard, but as a guard he was too often on roller skates. I could be wrong about my grade. It feels right to me.
 
Well - we don't know, it's just forum debating. But I would argue that you are stating in a round about way that our HC and GM are idiots. They literally let a proven, capable center in his prime walk for no compensation. Maybe the plan was to get Linderbaum and they got caught when they weren't able to pull that off. But either way, if Allegretti is not an upgrade over Biadasz, it looks really bad for our decision makers.

Yeah, I'm probably arguing that they made a mistake in letting Biadasz go prematurely. Idiots? I don't know that I'd go that for. I love being proven wrong, but at the moment I think it was a bad call. Alegretti already being hurt, leaving us with Good-Jones as the presumptive starter doesn't help.

I don't think they believe Allegretti's injury is serious or that they have any intention of starting Good-Jones (I'm not sure he will even be on the roster when the dust settles). As mentioned, Allegretti has been one of the most durable OL in the NFL over the course of his career. I do think we can agree that not having anyone other than a rookie C as a viable backup (and is he really a viable backup?) looks bad after you let your previous starter walk to show what good guys you are.

As a recovering homer, I feel my role is to remind everyone that massive change (like replacing both coordinators with inexperienced first timers in the middle of your franchise QBs first contract) doesn't necessarily guarantee improvement and success. I hope it does, but Quinn has put his HCing career on the line with those decisions, and AP has rubber stamped those moves. I think Quinn has 2 seasons to prove the moves were great ones. If it doesn't work out, he is done as a HC.
 
Watching Josh Taylors videos, he's a fan, but really detailed, reminds me some of how I used to do my camp recaps when I'd go, he actually is better. Some of his thoughts.

A. Luke the #2 Wr in camp. That contradicts JP. Luke is the starter right now in camp at slot, Antoinio mostly playing with the 2s.

B. Defense looks good, exotic blitzes, pressure coming from everywhere

C. Jayden looks super sharp and locked in

D. O line been up and down, struggiling selling play action, defense constantly blowing up their play action

E. A ton of motion on offense

F. Not down on Lane but he among others mentions the drops, and he's playing with the 2's.

G. Styles looks great. Luvu looks like he's good his mojo back.

H. Reaves and Cross mostly playing with the 1's at safety, sometimes Harris. Another reporter maybe its Tischler was saying that Quan doesn't look hot

I. Feels like FS is an obvious hole - Wrs seem to be carving up right-middle whereever the FS is

J. Jonthan Joseph looks sharp and the mosat fluid of the defenders dropping into coverage

K. Charles Omenihyo (probably botching his spelling) looks really good.

L. the other QVs including Mariota really struggiling

M. WRs look OK but think they can use Diggs

N. Jayden loves throwing to TEs -- looking for them on plays

0. Good-Jones struggiling with snaps
 
  • The Commanders are still in see-what-we-have mode at receiver, but I'm told free agent Stefon Diggs is on the radar. Washington is monitoring the situation with Diggs, who's intrigued by the chance to play in Washington (he's from the area). Let's see how things play out, but it seems like this is a realistic option as the sides keep in contact. Diggs is coming off a 1,000-yard season during which he barely played half the offensive snaps in New England and rehabbed a torn ACL from the previous offseason. He believes he could be better this year.
  • Meanwhile, the team is leaning on a variety of players to fill the receiver void. Treylon Burks' name comes up often when asking people here who will play a role in the passing game. The Commanders like his ability as a contested-catch option in the red zone. "He's made a lot of great plays early," McLaurin said. Third-round rookie Antonio Williams has flashed. Dyami Brown, Luke McCaffrey, Jaylin Lane and Van Jefferson round out a room that has decent depth but not enough top-end playmaking.
