It was his loss too because I imagine if Ben Johnson knew what Jayden Daniels was capable of there is zero chance he turns the job down where as the Bears hire definitely feels like he was brought in to "fix" Caleb Williams.

Jon, for whatever his other faults, was awesome on TV and in the media.

Jay’s presence will obviously lower the intelligence, insight, wisdom, credibility, thoughtfulness and quality of the show.

Good for Jay. I look forward to hearing him with Sheehan on Fridays and I hope he continues doing it. He's funny, knows football and has a great eye for talent.

He's also been grinding it at it for a couple years now and now has it with this gig

I think we disagree about Jay. He knows about as much about football as a twice roasted hotdog. And his eye for talent wouldn't be able to tell the difference between my 5th grade teacher and Millie Alcock. (no, they did not look the same.)

He is a damn fool. My hope is this ridiculous image restoration the local media have given him for no particular reason makes his nepo-baby ass just go away entirely.

But I suppose he has his fans...

You just don't like him :rotflmao: . I don't think Gruden had the character and maturity to be our head coach. But he did take a 3-4 win team and get us to the playoffs in season 2. We were basically a .500 team during his tenure. That's no where near good enough, but he wasn't incompetent. Whether or not he was a great talent evaluator isn't even relevant - he wasn't the GM afterall. He played the guys he was given the opportunity to play, he wasn't the one selecting them.

I'm not a huge fan of his, probably for the same reasons you aren't, but come on - I think he has always been a pretty sharp offensive coach. He just didn't have what it took at the HC level. Lots and lots of coordinators that has been true of throughout NFL history.

I refuse to believe any reality where Jay Gruden is not a bumbling baffoon.

I actually think my biggest criticism of him is that he proved he wasn't a sharp offensive coach. He literally ran the same running play on first down for no yards 90% of the time for 2.25 years until he got fired. The 2 most predictable things in the entire world where the sun rising in the east and Jay calling Duo on every first down.

I persoally don't think he was that great an offensive mind. When he was in Cincy, he had some really good offensive players (at least at that time) and they were a pretty good offense. Not great. better than average.

I find him to be a incompetent, insufferable wretch. I wish him a papercut and then have somebody (maybe Desean Jackson) pour lemon juice on it.

Man, you really have it in for the guy. We actually had some pretty good seasons on offense under him plus he certainly proved himself as a respected offensive mind in Cincinnati. And it’s not like he had Peyton Manning or something. He did it with mediocre immobile Andy Dalton. His coaching tenure here was undermined by a horrible defense and glaring lack of talent due to a joke of a front office and meddling owner. A 500 record working for Dan Snyder is actually a heck of an accomplishment in my mind. Not saying he’s some Hall of Fame coach, but he’s nowhere near the complete bum you make him out to be.
 
The bar for intelligently discussing NFL offenses and defenses, play design, rosters, player talent, etc. is not as high as the bar for being a good NFL coach, but the experience even of a poor coach obviously transfers. Acting like someone who failed at the absolute top of his field isn’t qualified to talk about that field in a product directed towards idiot fans is laughable, and obviously biased by personal dislike. Which is fine.

Jay Gruden in terms of media qualifications clears the bar by a long shot and has good chemistry with most other media types, which is a different skill in itself. He’s affable and successfully puts on the Everyman persona.

Thinking he’s a dummy in comparison to actually innovative NFL offensive minds, fine. Still pretty arrogant from a fan POV, but I get it. You’re talking about someone who got his shot because of his brother and then Bruce Allen, but still survived for years at the very top of an exclusive field. He’s already not respected as a coach, and washed out of the league young, because he’s mediocre. That’s a given. Even still he’s obviously beyond qualified to talk professional football, playcalling, and talent evaluation on a podcast or TV show. More than 99.5% of all people would be even if you thought he was a mediocre or worse NFL coach. That’s how high level this stuff is and how above the head of the average fan it all is, even for us hardcore types.

He’s perfectly qualified for what he’s doing.

I kind of agree with this, let's not forget the fades he kept calling that never seemed to work. But he is good on the radio and I enjoy him in that role, glad to see it's going to expand.

On another note I listen to sports talk radio while working at the golf course. The national show that comes on 630, can't remember if it's Dan Patrick, does this annoying bit where they take calls from random fans and that fan goes through the schedule of his team and calls the wins and losses. Why exactly would I care to hear some guy in Minneapolis giving his game by game breakdown of the Vikings schedule?
 
Kirk Cousins may have moved on to haunting Las Vegas, but it won't stop Commies fans from telling ghost stories about Minnesota to scare the radio listeners.

As for yesterday, the media wasn't allowed in, they did a walkthrough. So Keim recorded his podcast from home and there wasn't any real new news, so it was a light news day in general.

A few options for articles and such:

  • Ben Standig's Substack: https://lastmanstandig.substack.com/ Free option with some content, $80/year or $8/month for all content. Beat reporter who is a really good writer.
  • Mark Bullock's Substack: https://markbullock.substack.com/ Free option with some content, $50/year or $5.month for all conetnt. Film study type of stuff, it's written, but there are imbedded videos.
  • John Keim's ESPN content. I found a new way to get all of John's articles without going through ESPN's bloated search stuff: Muck Rack: https://muckrack.com/john-keim/articles. If you go there, it scrapes ESPN for all John Keim articles. It's basically a better search. You do get their ads, but eh, I like it.
  • Nicki Jhabvala writes for the Athletic now. However, the Athletic is owned by the NY Times, and it's behind a pay wall. https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/author/nicki-jhabvala/
Sadly with the twitterfercation of the world, most reporters give news in 220 character snippets, and not long form articles. There are also a lot more podcasts and youtube videos. I still like reading articles.

The other person who writes stuff is "Squeaky" Thom Lovero. But I find him kind of generally deplorable, and therefore don't know where he writes things and I'm not going to go search for it lest I give his dumb ass credit for a click by mistake.
