Who is featured in Quarterback Season 3?​

Washington Commanders’ Jayden Daniels joins Quarterback after taking the NFL by storm as a rookie in 2024. Setting multiple league records while leading the Commanders to a 12-5 record and a game away from the Super Bowl, Daniels was nearly unanimously named NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year. After putting the league on notice with a historic debut season in Washington, Daniels enters Year 2 with the pressure, attention, and momentum all dialed up.

I’m liking it well enough so far, considering it’s about a disappointing year. You get to see more of him as a person which is cool.

Maybe not publicly but silently they are.

After his rookie season jaydens expectations in the media and overall rankings were meteoric, many having him in the top 5 while cautioning that we needed to see it again.

Now you'd be hard pressed to find anyone who ranks him in the top ten.

They may not be coming right out and saying they dont have as much confidence in him as they did a year ago at this time but the lack of praise in comparison is impossible to miss.
 
All of this is, to quote Coach Saban, great "rat poison". I don't think Daniels is the type to need outside criticism to fuel and motivate him, but I do think he would greatly enjoy keeping receipts and proving the doubters wrong by turning in a great season.
 
I just finished watching Quarterback on Netflix, which featured a lot of Jayden, and if anything it made me feel even worse about what they've put around him. Of the quarterbacks from that 2024 class, Jayden as lol I've said a lot was handed the worst overall situation, and I don't think any of those teams has done less to aggressively build around its young quarterback than Washington.

It also reminded me how often Jayden's instinct is to take off when nobody gets open. That's part of what makes him special, but it also means he's putting his body on the line to compensate for what's missing around him. At a minimum, Washington is flirting with doubling down on that formula again this season: Jayden, go make something happen when the play breaks down.

I know some fans and people in the local media strongly push back on the idea that Washington hasn't done enough for him. Fine. But when the same criticism is coming from so many different corners—national analysts, film people, personnel evaluators, etc.—it's at least a legitimate debate. You can't just wave it away as fans looking for something to complain about.

And watching the show reinforces how easy Jayden is to root for. He's incredibly likable, a great teammate, tough as hell, and seems obsessed with winning.

I know I've beaten this point to death, but I think the dude deserves better than, "Just be patient and hope this veteran retread we signed for peanuts suddenly hits, or that our latest mid-round receiver develops."

When you have a quarterback this talented on a rookie contract, he shouldn't constantly be the one asked to elevate the plan. The plan should be designed to elevate him.

This is probably a better topic for the Jayden tracker thread, but I’ve been waiting to discuss it. I watched the Netflix show and liked it.

I had mostly the same impression of Jayden as a person. He works hard, supports his team, wants to play, and wants to win. I’m also impressed by how cool he is, in the sense that he is low drama and remains calm under pressure.

My only concern on the personal side is his relationship with his mom, which gives me RG3’s dad flashbacks. I appreciate that she raised a good kid, but she seems meddlesome, as in her social media posts about our roster. The fact she is also his agent adds another layer to this worry. I also noticed that Baker and Flacco’s segments showed wives and kids, whereas Ward and Jayden’s showed their parents. I know they are young, but someday they will need to cut the apron strings.

The other thing that struck me in watching the show is how tough you have to be to play quarterback in the NFL. I was impressed by the way Baker and Flacco both played through a bunch of injuries. Jayden was immediately bubble wrapped in similar situations, and the coaches were still criticized for not being cautious enough. I have been saying he is injury prone, but JD said this was the first time he has missed a lot of football to injury—he was healthy in high school, college, and as a rookie—so maybe that’s not quite right. But the recent rash of injuries and the dynamic of him only playing on special occasions are concerns.

Couldn’t agree more. I’ve been critical of the dynamic with his mother and will continue to be. If you want to mature on the field, you probably need to grow up off the field as well. He really needs to get out from under her wing. Maybe 25 is the new 18 these days, but he just seems way too old to be such a mama’s boy. Perhaps she will do the unselfish thing and remove herself from control over his professional life, after all, it’s what’s best for her son. But I doubt it. He’s probably going to have to be the one to pull the plug. I love my mother as well and she is super smart, but when it comes to advise on managing my business and finances, I know I’m much better off working with seasoned professionals.

Whether a player is allowed to 'play through' injuries or is 'bubble wrapped' I think has a lot to do with the nature of the injury. If you recall, in 2024, they let Jayden play through a pretty bad rib injury. That's because there wasn't a huge risk in making the injury worse, it was mostly just about how much pain he could take. When you look at 2025, you aren't going to play through something like a dislocated elbow and another hit to that elbow could make it significantly worse.

It just depends.

I think they have handled JD's injuries appropriately so far. Let's hope that we can be more successful in preventing them going forward.

Fair enough, it does depend on the nature of the injury.

But I do think we’re very cautious with him. He didn’t play in preseason, he probably could have come back from his early season injuries before he did, and the decision to try bringing him back from the elbow late in the year was heavily criticized.

Agree but one big exception was leaving him in the Seattle blowout. Terrible decision. And I’m not saying it in hindsight, I was screaming it from the stands at the time. I realize it was a new injury rather than exacerbating the injuries he was still recovering from, but nonetheless it was a totally unnecessary risk with really nothing to gain and it blew up in their face. The game was completely uncompetitive and long over with at halftime. Jayden should've been on the sideline. Very frustrating.
 
I think the running and in turn risking his health needs to have one more year.

As mentioned, watching the Quarterback series on Netflix reminded me what Washington's secret sauce was for overcoming mediocre receiver play: Jayden's legs. If nobody got open, he'd take off. Hopefully he can keep doing that while staying healthy like he did in 2024.

IMO he didn’t play in preseason because most of our other important players were older veterans and also not playing in preseason, so they weren’t going to play the franchise QB with a bunch of young backups on a thin squad. Consequences of an old roster with few younger foundational players at the time. I don’t think they were preemptively terrified and keeping him in bubble wrap out of a specific paranoia about his own injury-proneness (even though a lot of fans did advocate for that, to your point) so much as they were risk-averse and the rest of the starters also couldn’t be risked (in their minds)

Agreed, but I want to see fewer planned runs called for Jayden. If he sees daylight and can get out of trouble that's one of his superpowers, but he has others: timing, accuracy, and y'know doing quarterbacky things! So yes, let's see Daniels use his legs on rollouts and scrambles, but let's not call 10 end arounds and dive plays a game for him.
 
I want to see him throw the ball away if there is not a clear lane to the outside. I’m done with crowded up the middle runs for him. And get down early when you do run.
 
I don't really have an issue with Daniels running it's more what he does once he takes off. Hurts runs a lot but manages to avoid big hits most of the time because he is focused on the open field and gets down as soon as danger lurks. I think also a big difference is running under duress versus having all day behind the pocket with no danger and running right through holes that any RB would also easily get through.

At least he doesn't get blown up like RG3 did. Whenever he ran and got hit it was like Tecmo Bowl popcorn.

Not a ton of planned runs for Jayden in general. He's thing is usually scrambiling when nothing is open. When people talk about, Jayden you are very good, who gives a crap who your WRs are, just figure it out. There is something to that -- and its simply, heck the WR isn't open, so I am taking off. They don't really have Wrs that are great seperators by reputation, so its Jayden run. And maybe in 2027 they finally address this. But unless they sign someone like Diggs -- the stress is on Jayden to run. And run a lot in 2026 IMO.
