I'm sure it's a total coincidence SF is the only team that canceled their mandatory June minicamp. 'Cause surely Lynch and Shanahan ain't THAT petty, right?
It was supposedly a reward for 100% attendance at the voluntary OTAs last week. But it wasn't really 100%, was it, because Aiyuk wasn't there and he's still on the roster.
I'm sure there's no way Aiyuk's agent (yes, he still has one) told SF that he finally cornered BA and the wackadoodle promised he'd show up for minicamp next week - which would have forced their hand. This way, SF gets to keep stringing Aiyuk along on their little revenge tour.
Feels like this should make it a no-brainer for Peters to tell JD5, look, we can't wait any longer, we'll try to do something if SF ever releases your BFF - and go sign Diggs for crying out loud. I'm tired of hearing Quinn's coach-speak about how everything is rainbows and lollipops in the WR room.
I honest to God don't thin they're waiting for Aiyuk.
I do think, rightly or wrongly, they think they are fine at WR with who they have, at least for now until they get into TC. Reports out of camp are the guys are doing well. Maybe that's because the secondary is trash, but maybe it's because the guys here are developing. It's almost impossible to say.
I also think they believe that they have enough weapons on offense and the Outside WR2 will not be the second target of the offense. The reason they think this is that they are REALLY going to try and limit the passing attempt by running the ball 50% of the time. If that's the case, there are only ~30-35 passing snaps in the game. Target 1 is Terry. Target 2 is Chig. Target 3 is probably Williams in the slot. Target 4 is probably White out of the backfield, or somebody in that role. Target 5 is Outside WR2.
If you sortof do the math, that means outside WR2 is only primary on maybe 5 plays a game. And if you spread the ball around between Terry, Chig, Williams and RB, that is a lot of diversity by itself. The offense can essentially force teams not to bracket Terry if it can make it pay by targeting Chig/Williams/White. You don't NEED the player to pull coverage to be the other outside guy. It can come from a variety of places. And running the ball well is another component of that.
Now, I'm not necessarily saying that's the ideal way or the way I would want to do it, but they tried to upgrade the WR2 spot, and they couldn't, so here we are.
One thing which did stand out: Quinn specifically called out Lane as a guy who has really improved from year 1 to year 2. If true, that's really promising overall. He mentioned him by name. If that's true, maybe there is a world where Lane could be in the slot and if Williams develops on the outside, he slides outside. That's a lot of speed on the field at the same time. But we need to see it before we can believe it.
Something on Diggs: He hasn't signed anywhere. We could have made an offer. We could have made a very good offer. We also might not have. He might just not want to sign right now. Him not signing anywhere is interesting. I would have thought Philly would have made a big play for him with the trade of Brown. I get that positionally, maybe not exactly what they need. But it would be a proven guy to add to the mix. The Giants just signed OBJ and JuJu Smith-Schuster. OBJ hasn't played in a year and JuJu had 33 receptions for 350 yards. Diggs would have made more sense for them too, and he didn't sign there. So something is up with Diggs. It might not be us, it might be him.
