Burg…

“Even if Chig isn’t as good of a tight end as Ertz, he’s definitely more of a weapon” doesn’t make much sense.
.
Let me try to make it make sense.

If you passed the ball to Ertz over the past two years, Ertz probably catches it and falls down. There's almost no risk of YAC. There's almost no risk of big play. If you pass the ball to Chig, there's a good chance he breaks a tackle. There's a good chance he outruns the linebacker or safety assigned to him. So, Chig is the better weapon even if the overall production looks similar and even if Ertz's vet savvy helps him find holes in zones that others might miss.

Sorry, but yards are yards.

Oh, you don't believe that.

If a running back starts breaking off runs in the fourth quarter because the team is down thirty points and the defense is playing soft and allowing the run. Those yards aren't the same as gash plays in the first quarter or in a tight play. Not all yards are equally impactful.

Okay - while true - what gives you the notion that is the case with Chig vs. Ertz? Did Ertz 3rd down receptions for first downs not count in that regard?

I guess I'm in a semantics mood so I'm going to argue I'd argue the word "weapons," too.

Signing Chig isn't a sign of neglect. I'd even argue Chig is far more of a weapon than Ertz even if Chig isn't as good a tight end or just as productive a tight end. You can also make the argument that he was either the top or second best tight end available.
Signing White and Ford aren't signs of neglect. Both are legit 3rd down backs. They have real NFL production. Adding them to a 800 yard rookie that set the league on fire during the first six weeks of the season last year ain't neglect. It's building a very solid committee. I don't think you can make the argument that they were the best running backs available, but you might be able to make the argument that White was the best receiving running back available.

So again, if you want to say that Peters has neglected wide receiver, I think that's an argument that can be made. I think it's unreasonable to say "support" and equally unfair to say "weapons."

If you're going to take issue with my wording — all in good spirits — I can say the same back to you.

I never said any of this was a “sign of neglect.” That’s not the argument I’m making.

Go back to the pre-FA threads. You’d probably have a hard time finding anyone pushing harder than I was for them to sign Chig. Same thing at RB. I’m pretty sure I was one of the first people pushing the Rachaad White idea months before the signing happened. I complimented the Ford signing, too, and even recently talked him up.

On Day 3 of the draft thread last year, I was also one of the louder voices pushing Croskey-Merritt.

I’m not bringing this up to pat myself on the back. My point is the opposite: using a stock market analogy, I’m actually very familiar with these pieces because most of them were players I personally liked before Washington acquired them. These are largely my own stock picks coming into play.

But sticking with that analogy, I wasn’t buying Apple, Nvidia, or some established blue-chip stock. I was bargain shopping. Especially with someone like Rachaad White.

What I think is happening in these discussions is at some spots any proof of action from Peters gets treated as proof the problem is solved or close enough. As if acknowledging the team added pieces automatically means those pieces will develop into Microsoft-level outcomes.

Voice_of_Reason said my view on helping Jayden is overly simplistic. Respectfully, I think the opposite is true. To me, a lot of the defense of Peters’ offensive approach has been overly simplistic — it often boils down to projecting players without proven pedigree into far bigger roles than they’ve shown they can handle so far in their career. We’re essentially assuming the medium level software company becomes Microsoft because we like the stock.

And there’s also a bit of an unintended strawman mixed in here. Criticizing what they’ve done at Z receiver doesn’t mean people are claiming Peters has “done nothing.” Nobody is making an all-or-nothing argument like that.

This reminds me a lot of the 2023 offensive line debate. Back then, people said critics weren’t factoring in scheme enough, upside enough, development enough. But disagreeing with the best-case scenario for how a unit might come together doesn’t mean someone is “missing the plot.”

I’m not missing the plot here either. I can paint the optimistic scenario for almost every move they made — because many of these players were guys I personally wanted. I understood the upside before the team even acquired them.

So I don’t really need explanations about how these players could work out. I already know the bull case because I bought into many of these players before Peters acquired them.

The disagreement is simply about risk assessment. It’s risky to assume that every bargain buy hits its ceiling, every developmental player blossoms, every injury concern disappears, and every projection breaks perfectly in your favor. Could it all work out? Absolutely. But acting like concerns are invalid simply because there’s a theoretical upside case for each player individually is where I disagree.

I love Chig as a player. But he hasn’t shown he’s peak Ertz yet — honestly, he hasn’t even shown he’s Commanders-version Ertz yet. Could he become that in Washington? Absolutely. That’s why I wanted them to sign him in the first place.

But I also can’t just assume that because I’m enthusiastic about the player, we suddenly found our own Kelce and now the burden at WR magically disappears. That’s projecting the absolute best-case scenario as if it’s already reality.

And to me, that’s the disconnect in some of these debates.

Now, that's an interesting question.

I think that's where I was thinking weapon vs. tight end. Ertz was a very effective chain moving, possession tight end. I don't see Chig being as good at that. What I do see is him getting in space, trucking someone, or just blowing by someone. Now, here's what I don't know. Are the six first down Ertz converts potentially worth more than Chig getting a couple forty plus yard plays? In a way, it's an old argument.

Is the posession receiver more, less, or of equal value to the homerun threat receiver (I know there's a better term but I'm blanking.)? If they both get a hundred yards, but one does it in ten plays and the other in three which impacts the game more? I suppose the answer lies in where and how those catches occur. That posession catch that seals the game and means the other team can never touch the game is sometimes more important than the 40 yard crosser that fails to eat clock.

I may also be overestimating Chig's big play potential. I'm going off his highlight clips more than anything. The guy is fast and he breaks tackles. That feels more dangerous than Ertz and therefore more exciting. If you argue that the tortoise wins the race, I'll probably not argue much.

Fair. And I didn't mean to.

I will sound like a broken record when it comes to Deebo Samuel but I am still disappointed that a signing I really liked ended up being pretty much meaningless due to the season the team had overall last year. It was plainly obvious Deebo Samuel wasn't the same WR as five seasons ago, but he still showed his worth and I think on a healthy team with an actual defense, his contributions would have been seen as more meaningful. The fact that he is still on the market means he is probably holding out for a good situation to arise, but if we still end up with Aiyuk as the answer for the #2 WR spot, I still wouldn't mind bringing Deebo back if it made financial sense. I think Aiyuk is just as much of a question mark as Deebo was when we signed him as far as wondering what version of the WR are we getting.

Yeah to me Chig versus Ertz is like arguing pizza versus cake. Two different versions of a TE.

I get Ertz is like the posterchild for what some fans hated about the 2025 roster. Older player who isn't fast.

And Chig presents the opposite. Younger player who is fast.

Ertz a route runner technician, as Logan Paulsen said one of the best route runners in the history of the game. And he can do it in tight spaces, hence he's a great red zone and TD guy. Also a big time leader. So I don't have this good riddance feeling about him.

Chig isn't touted as an Ertz level route runner but he's fast and is a YAC guy where Ertz isn't. He's also not scored many TDs.

Very different flavors. For people to assume that Chig is some massive upgrade is based on hope-optimism. And don't get me wrong, it could happen. But we don't know until we know.

Chig can run with the ball, yet if you look at YPC which factors everything, Ertz and Chig with basically identical YPC last year, with Ertz with the better number the year before.

I like the signing a lot but I am not in the camp that its an automatic big upgrade.

Just checking, we are still exposed at receiver and corner ?

We have Dyami Brown, Van Jefferson, a kick returner, and a punt returner. We got so much talent we could trade it to needier teams, honestly.

This is a fun exercise.

QB - we are good if he’s healthy.

Off Playmaker - if JD5 counts we have two. If he doesn’t, just Terry. We have a few could bed but none really proven. So we’re short here. By 2 of JD doesn’t count.

Quality OL - Need 3. Have 2. Conerly could get there this year so we have a chance to check this box.

Pass Rusher - Oweh and Chaisson. I don’t think either are world beaters but should be able to produce some pressure. It’s a check but not a real confident check.

D Playmakers - Relying on projection and return to form: Styles and Sainristil. So short there.

We really are in a rebuild but they don’t want to admit it.

It’s funny because for a rebuild team we are in pretty good shape. But for a contender we are not.

Yeah QB is its own category. So on top of that he puts next having three play markers on offense.

Jeremiah was also once a scout and worked in a FO.

I hope Chig and Bill will be counted as offensive playmakers by the end of the year. Likewise, I hope that Oweh, Chaison, and Luvu might be able to be included as D Playmakers. I don't think any of those are unreasonable. I guess it depends how you define the term. I don't think the term means All Pro or even probowler. It just means good player expected to make significant plays every game.

A playmaker is someone you have to account for because they are a consistent, high end talent that make an impact on the game.

You named a whole lot of “well, could be!”

Not arguing that. Arguing right now. This minute. Chig and Bill do not fit.

Luvu could.

It is hard to argue what a great QB like Brady or Manning can do for average receivers. I just hope you aren't considering Jayden in the same category as those two
He was in 2024. Of course I don't consider him at that level, just showing how a great QB can make average receivers work where a bad corner will be target by the opponent every week.

Good post and I agree. I'm big on Chig, I love how he can take some of the pressure off the receivers by providing bigger plays. But 3rd and 6 is what wins or loses games and Ertz was money there, not sure who they will have who can match his production.

Really feels like they want that to be Williams role. Williams is the quick separator, get open guy on the team.
