David Blough and the Offensive Staffing Thread

That was 15 years ago. Since then, they've made the playoffs twice, won one playoff game, and been one of the worst teams in football. Hell, they've had just 2 positive point differentials...and that INCLUDES their fluke year. But you go right ahead. Trade rosters. BTW, we swept them, again, this year.

I think I had a newish thought... David Blough is viewed as a possible wunderkind, but also viewed as a high risk and maybe someone who was chosen one year early. We know that first year play callers struggle even the best of them do. We've gone over that a bunch.
about their relationship and his comfort with him, but because Quinn saw Kingsbury use Daniels as a cheat code. When plays broke down, Daniels was able to improvise by buying time with his legs or by scrambling. We saw Daniels do this a lot (too much) under Kingsbury. In year one, the cheat code worked incredibly. In year two, the stupid coders developed a patch so that it still worked but not always and not quite as well.

Still, what if the reason Quinn felt comfortable going with Blough is that he recognized Blough as an up and comer and believed that Daniels has the kind of sixth sense and cheat code abilities to salvage a plays so not every play call has to be perfect.

Logan is usually a homer regarding the team but he seemed to be questioning the move on the most recent Take Command pod. Not because of Blough’s ability but the learning curve in the role for even the best and the pitfalls along the way including figuring out where to feedback from other assistants.

Logan was here when McVay got his first OC role and talked through some of that
 
That's OK, we have time. I don't see the Washington Commanders being a 13 or 14 win team in 2026 so in that regard if it takes 2 years to get this team legitimtately back on track and in the playoffs on a more solid foundation, then so be it.

I have been sitting here since going to Super Bowl 26 to see Washington put an NFL team at the top of the leader board.

After 34 years I can certainly wait another year or two.
 
The bigger question is whether Quinn himself is now officially on the hot seat and what it means for the coordinators chances of being here long term if Quinn isn't extended and/or doesn't even make it to the end of his contract. Is the front office trying to approach this under the assumption that they still view Quinn as the guy but wanted more input in the actual X's & O's guys designing & calling the scheme or are they making less of a splash with the coordinator hirings because getting rid of Quinn in the next season or two remains a possibility and in that scenario it is likely the entire coaching operation goes down with him?
 
Of course Quinn is on the hot seat.

Any time both coordinators are fired the head coach is usually next if there are continued failures.

Look at 49ers who played 8 games with their back up QB.

I would argue yes, we’ve gotten better. No, we’re not there yet, but San Fran isn’t in the 2nd year of a new GM, HC, staff. Kyle Shanahan has been there for 8 years. That’s 8 years of drafts, free agencies, and roster construction. A roster that OUR GM has his finger prints all over. We’ve turned over 60% of the roster TWICE. This isn’t an established situation, and it sure as hell wasn’t gonna get fixed in 2 off seasons.

But the team didn’t act like we were that close. There is a lot of saying they did, but they didn’t. Trading for Tunsil wasn’t a 1 year rental. Deebo performed to expectation and the one move that didn’t work out was Lattimore, and I still believe at the time they did it with the belief he would last 3 more years.

They drafted a RT in the first round. Hardly a knee jerk move, and they still carried over $23 mil… 2nd most in the NFL according to Spotrac.

Even the Mclaurin deal gives a ton of flexibility to the team. The fanbase may have seen us as being closer to complete, but the moves made, relatively speaking, were not anxious or desperate.
 
Ben Standig bantered today with Sheehan and talked about bringing in some more guys on offense who are experienced in play calling. Don't think anyone is sure whether Brian Johnson will want out or what happens to Anthony Lynn. Standig threw out the name Darrell Bevell, crossed Quinn's path in Seattle. He's on the Miami staff but someone they could make a Senior Offensive Assistant or fill that Brian Johnson role.
 
That's one aspect that has been bothering me since they promoted Blough: Do they make this move if Pritchard is still here? That would be three people he jumped in the pecking order. I am sure that is ruffling feathers, as it is.

I was actually wondering what Darrell Bevell was up to before we promoted Blough.

I think they do if DET was still sniffing around Blough in your scenario. An even more interesting situation would have been if there was simultaneous outside interest in both Pritchard and Blough while both were on staff...which one would've gotten the nod?
 
Pritchard has been a bad OC before. There’s no evidence they saw him as anything other than QB coach material and a good resource on staff. It would’ve been awkward (or resulted in him leaving anyways) but seeing the rare ballsiness of this decision, I have no trouble believing they would’ve elevated Blough above him or offered him the chance to leave on his own terms.
 
I'm not sure why Standig dropped Bevall's name yesterday but there could be something to it via this article today in his Substack.

Yeah this is true for SF, they have been building this for a while. This definitely a make or break off season for Peters though.
