Official Game Thread - Week 17 - Falcons @ Commanders - SNF

I agree with you Boone. Kirk would've been up for this game and no way do I believe he would go out against us and look as bad as he has in some games recently. I think we have a better chance against Penix. Our defense has been practicing against a mobile QB all season and while there isn't a lot of tape to watch on him I feel confident that Whitt will have a solid plan to minimize how effective he will be. Play it like they did against the Eagles in the 2nd half. Contain the run game and force the QB to move the ball.
Michael penix is not what you would call a mobile qb using pretty much any definition.
Penix had 8 yards rushing last year in 15 games

Good point. Penix isn't a "running" QB. But he is more mobile than Kirk meaning he can move and avoid sacks. He wasn't sacked a single time against a decent Giant Front. The Falcons were run heavy last week and I bet they will be again. Stop the run, make Penix beat us was my main point.

Yes he is younger and faster than cousins but that bar isn't very high, cousins is the slowest most statuesque quarterback in the league at this point.
The giants are about as deflated as you can be at this point and watching your offense give up two touchdowns is even more deflating, I wouldn't put too much stock into the fact that they didn't get to the quarterback they checked out many weeks ago.

But yes he is almost certainly going to be more difficult to catch and take down in the backfield he was pretty good at avoiding sacks in college.

Maybe. But we have struggled all season against mobile QBs.

I think it's a talent issue. I think we are good enough to stop one thing. We are not good enough to walk and chew bubble gum. Last week, when we only had to stop the running game, we shut it down. When we had to contend with Hurts' running and passing plus a potent running game, we were in trouble.

So, whatever comes, we need to stay sharp.
We did okay agaiinst Kyler Murray

Sleep on Penix if you wish. I see a lot of potential.

I wasn't suggesting he isn't going to be good just that I wouldn't fear his legs at the moment.
Penix has plenty of potential he was a top ten pick for a reason.

Penix ran a 4.53 forty so he got a little speed.

For me it's less about Penix's mobility and more about Kurt's lack of mobility. He's more limited now than before the achilles injury.

As I watch the Falcons - Giants game, my first thought goes towards the defense and Penix 'pass rush experience'. One of the main goals of a good blitz is can you get the QB to split his attention from routes and rush. The Giants really didn't stunt a lot in passing downs but when they did, had some moderate success. However, it wasn't threatening enough to cause Penix any real hesitancy in his focus. We definitely are going to test that with our pass rush. And I am 100% eager to see a fired up, fresh JA get some snaps. How fast he can reach his Browns game level will be crucial going into the playoffs. And I guarantee that puts a step into his brother Payne. Expect in this game that they play like the Cowgirls did vs us. Rush TT was sick at like 2.3 and Penix did the same thing vs the Giants. That will be their base idea with him throwing the ball.

Penix has more than enough talent and the Giants were a great 1st game for him. However, and I say this with a lot of air in my chest, we are not the Giants and we bring a whole different attitude and violent conclusion to plays that he hasn't seen yet. Our favor. I also think this is a 'must get the run game going' game for our offense. KK said today that his smart Oline guys are being a bit too smart instead of just firing off and taking it to the defense. Watch for how fast we hit our point of contact this week. Should be more like the Titans game. At least that will be the focus

Having watched the game once, those are my first thoughts and where to look during the game. However, I do keep in mind with this team and talent.....Any Given Sunday and in Primetime. Motivation can be a gigantic nut-punch to a great plan. I have complete faith in DQ for getting us mentally and physically ready. But they get paid also.......

Oh and on a side note.....I would love to see a few designed pass plays with Luke being a 3rd down back with little or no pass blocking responsibilities but a match up vs their LBs.

How much total money has Kirk made in his career?

Falcons just signed emory jones to the practice squad to run the scout team to try to emulate daniels running ability.

I think it's officially official jayden is a weapon.

I think the Giants are actively tanking in order to get the #1 pick. Hope they use it on another shit QB.

Without ATL’s two pick-sixes, it’s a 20-7 Falcons win and is a lot less daunting than the actual 34-7 final score. This means that the Penix-led offense had two TD drives and two drives which ended in field goals.

Since I see Washington scoring a lot more than the Giants did, I’m hoping for a Commander-skins victory.

I think we need to blow them out quickly (like we did against Tennessee); otherwise, if we let Atlanta stay within striking distance of the lead, Raheem Morris may want to exact some revenge for himself and Cousins for the time they spent with the Redskins by throwing Cousins in the game and letting him go for broke. That’s my concern.

Would like to see the run game get back on track to help take some of the load off of #5 and the defense.

I don't expect an easy ride here. Penix wasn't revelatory last week and the opposition was much weaker, but allowing rookie and back up quarterbacks to look decent is one persistent problem that this team hasn't solved yet. Dalton, Murray and Watson, while not fitting either definition, are the only ones they've made life hell for.

Well, against the Saints... our D prepared to face the FAB Jake Haener... and Rattler came in from nowhere and ripped it with careless abandon. I give us (a little bit) of a pass on the back-up QB thing since we had rattled Jake pretty good in the first half.

The front seven need to go above and beyond the rest of the way. Especially with bsj having to play.
