So what is the over/under on the number of games before Haskins starts?

What is the over/under on the number of games before Gruden is fired?
 
I have given up on trying to think about when the Redskins are going to do anything rational.

Here we are heading into Week 4 and Trent Williams is still property of the Redskins.

This is a smelly fish right now.

The fact we are playing the Giants next week should not deflect our attention from how bad this team is against real competition.

A 27-24 win over New York doesn't move the needle for me if I am Snyder.

Referring to Gruden as Norv in this case is an insult to Norv. That was Steve Spurrier level play calling right most of the night. Blocking Khalil Mack with no one to start the game and then a single tackle most of the night is a fireable offense. And the fact that you come out of the gate with a game plan that doesn't block Mack is basically signalling you don't know football. But hey, that's Jay Gruden. He's the only one who thinks he is smart, and as others have pointed out, it's only because he has a D coordinator dumber than he is. These two are Tweedledum and Tweedledummer.

For the record, I'm still not a fan of firing the head coach mid season unless they are intentionally losing games and destroying players health. But Manusky has got to go. The Giants are about to embarrass the Redskins and we know the Patriots will as well. This whole team needs a new attitude and coaches that will get the most out of their players. But it needs to start right now with the defense.
 
This defense is a fraud.

While Miami and NY may be worse on D they don't have the number of high picks and free agents we do.

Manusky has no answers because the root cause was poor preparation and team building in the offseason.

These 11 starters we have don't play together with any sense of cohesion.

It's as if each game these guys are playing their first game together with no practice time.

I knew we were in trouble when my 13 year-old son was calling out our plays before the snap based on our formation.

At the end of the first half he looked at me and asked "is this as bad as the Michael Vick Eagles game?"

I was so stunned at the question, and then at the difficulty in answering it ... I think I just stared at him with my mouth open. After a moment, he chuckled, and said "I guess it is."

God bless that kid. He's still a fan. Spent halftime telling me how he's not going to be a bandwagoner like his friends, that he doesn't care if they make fun of him for rooting for the Redskins. The team doesn't deserve him. I have to admit I went to bed and missed the glorious comeback.
 
Bold prediction: We get our first win of the season against the Patriots on the arm of Haskins and hopefully a Gruden-less team.

Only way they would throw him out against the Pats would be if they started him in NY and doesn't appear that will happen. Or if Keenum gets hurt. Hell - Colt may be active for all we know.

I keep wondering if Allen told Gruden early on to start Haskins and he refused. He seems awfully determined not to put him in during a season where his job is in play.

Good point AS.

The Redskins have done nothing against legitimate teams.

To me a win against the Giants going through their own transitions doesn't absolve Gruden of anything, and no I am not guaranteeing a win there.

But I can see a case where a close win against NY has some at Redskins Park crowing about overcoming adversity and turning things around.

To me THAT isn't legit until this team comes out prepared and goes toe to toe with a capable opponent.

I have seen enough fool's gold around here the past 5 years.
 
Well, there's a lot of season left. As much as I know Gruden must go, I'm still loathe to do it in-season. Firing Manusky would be fine. That side of the ball would probably do better with a different play caller on gameday. The offense probably wouldn't do much better. Have no trust in anyone on that side of the ball.

Need to ride this train until the season ends. Then fire the entire staff.

In the meantime, I'd keep Gruden as far away from Haskins as I could. He has run off, or alienated every QB we've had since he got here. Except Colt.
If he's gonna get someone killed, let it be Case or colt.
 
Bill Callahan coached a team to the Super Bowl and was a college HC at major programs, he can take over on an interim basis for the balance of 2019.

If I am the owner I don't want to waste the next 13 games going 3-13 and being the NFL's second punching bag behind Miami.

It's not the talent but the bubbleheaded decision making that requires changes.

You don't block Khalil Mack with Vernon Davis or Chris Thompson.

You run the ball AT him not AWAY from him.

On offense you don't start out the game dropping back on 5 steps with the pressure from the Bears' D.

The quick passing game they went to in the second half utilizing backs in the passing game should have been THE strategy from the get go.

Instead we waited until it was 28-0 to make any changes.

And that fourth down play?

Anyone else see Case being confused and rushing the players up to the line to get the play off that ended with his leap and fumble?

Why not call a damned timeout to get it right.

Gruden stood there on the sideline like a lump of coal.

I thought he was in charge.

This team takes timeouts in the first quarter of games on a nothing second down play when the score is 0-0 but not here? ðŸ'¿

Notified, yes.

Prepared, no.

Coaching is more important as a difference maker in the NFL than any other major sport.

Don't tell me otherwise.

Bill Parcells took a 1-15 team to 9-7 in just first year.

Well sure he could. But his line isn't playing well. Penn & Flowers are doing the best. and they've had the least amount of time with him. It's also said that Callahan pretty much operates our running scheme. Unless he guaranteed me he would implement wholesale changes, ASAP, in what we're doing, then there's no point in firing Gruden now.
 
Assistants are often running schemes that align with how the HC wants to see things run.

Often time assistants when put in charge implement their own changes.

As an observer told me from a couple of years ago, Gruden doesn't stress efficiency and accountability.

Incredibly in training camp he had the offense out there to run a certain number of plays and he simply had them run them.

When certain players were not executing the plays instead of repeating them until they were done right, Gruden simply kept running the next play on his clipboard.

There was no follow up.

That's the type of program we are talking about here.
 
I get all that. I just don't think there would be enough change to matter. I'd rather the next coach coming in feel confident that he'll get to finish a season, regardless of how things might be going. The Gruden stain will not come out until the offseason. Whether he's fired now, or then.

This team needs new coaching. There is enough talent on this team for them to be competitive. These coaches aren't getting the best out of the players. They aren't putting them in positions to succeed. This is true on both offense and defense, but is most evident on defense.

I also don't believe these coaches teach technique or what players should be doing. They just say “run this play” and then look bewildered on the sideline when they aren't doing it right. It's why the offensive line has so many holding calls. It's why RBs not named Peterson can't hit holes. Its why a QB takes the entire play clock to run a QB sneak that the defense is clearly set up to stop and then he dives over the pile and sticks the ball out so it can get knocked out. It's why DBs are leaving their zones and having guys wide open. Why LBs are playing zone and covering no one while the fastest guy on the field is running wide open across the field. It's why the edge rushers have zero moves and hope that they only beat the guy around the edge. All this is coaching that is not happening with the Redskins.

I am excited about the prospects of a new coach and being able to get more out of these guys. I really do think there is talent on this team that is better than how this team is playing right now.

The only way, at least for now, that I'd advocate firing Gruden in season, is if it's part of something more significant happening.

Have to fire Allen, & Gruden.

Immediately hire Louis Riddick. Giving him full authority to run the football side of things. And let him decide who to keep/promote on the coaching staff.

And move on.
 
I don't see any fallout from firing Gruden.

He's been here for almost 6 years, in fact you can make the point the Redskins have been over patient with him.

This isn't 1999 when Snyder came in and threatened to fire Norv before he met him.

Update: Redskins only 0-3 team in NFC.
