Kirk Cousins Development Tracker

Kirk Cousins just became a rich young man ... and a Franchise (Tag) QB.

Yeah he is. Also didn't realize he's already 28 either. Not that it matters much, a franchise qb is so damn hard to come by.

Edit: Now it's time to find him that stud center to bond with. Suppose ya gotta be kind of close to have another man's hands by your privates all the time.

Well, it's the non exclusive tag, so maybe someone will be dumb enough to take him and give us 2 firsts.

Personally, I'd make him play another year before I committed anything more than this one franchise tag year.

he was almost 24 when he was drafted, he's a 'young' QB in terms of starts not necessarily experience or chronological determinants

Meanwhile, under the heading "exactly the kinds of things you want to hear" ...

“Kirk is a really good person. He’s not in it just to get the money, and we talked about this,” Redskins General Manager Scot McCloughan said this week at the NFL’s annual meeting. “He wants to be a Redskin. He wants to understand that it’s his team and we’re going to go do special things. . . . I’ve been around players in the past that were all worried about just the money. He’s not.”

McCloughan reiterated Tuesday that the Redskins would like a long-term deal with Cousins, who already has signed his tender. McCloughan expects Cousins to be at the facility for offseason activities while his agent and the Redskins continue negotiations. It will be Cousins’s first full offseason as a starting quarterback, and Redskins Coach Jay Gruden believes Cousins’s new contract — whether it is the tender or something longer term — will serve as extra motivation.

“That’s what happens when you sign a deal like this. It’s one thing being a fourth-round pick and you come in as a backup and 'Okay, I did this,’ ” Gruden said Wednesday during the NFC coaches breakfast. “Now all of a sudden, as you’re trying to establish yourself as one of the top five guys in the NFL, now you have a little bit more pressure on yourself to perform. And he knows that. He’s really working hard. He’s been down working his butt off with some people that I know. He’s going to get himself ready, and he’s going to have to earn it.”

Lots of guys have the physical tools ... what separates the successful ones from those who fade away are things like competitive fire, work ethic, football smarts, and of course, things they can't control, like a sound organization around them and the good fortune to stay healthy.

At least as of this moment, those elements all seem to be trending the right direction.

Cautious optimism is authorized.

This does not come as a surprise.

I read an article yesterday that said Kirk Cousins sacrifices animals unto his Lord Chtulu and eats babies.

Hmmm...

Yep, draggin' this thread back up again

Keim discusses Kirk's long ball, think this has been touched on already but it's still out there so he keeps answering.

Kirk Cousins can throw downfield more, but perception isn't reality - Washington Redskins Blog- ESPN

The Redskins would like Cousins to throw downfield a bit more, especially with a healthy Jackson. Cousins was far more effective on first downs after the first Dallas game – in the next three weeks he completed 35 of 43 passes on first down – he had attempted just 40 passes on first down in the previous five games combined. The coaches loved his deep ball to Pierre Garcon in the second Dallas game because it was an off-scheduled play where he gave his man a chance – and Garcon turned it into a touchdown.

They’d like to see more such plays because their receiving talent definitely suggests it can be an explosive tactic – New England’s receiving talent, in comparison, does not. Still, it’s an area where the Redskins want improvement. Do not mistake more yards per attempt, however, for a better passing attack. If the Redskins keep getting mismatches for Reed, it leads to shorter throws – but productive ones as well. If it leads to points, that's what matters most.

The difference is we won't be paying Kirk Cousins after seeing him play TWO games as the Seahawks did with Matt Flynn :)

If two full seasons in 2015 and 2016 are not enough to make you open your wallet for the guy you need to move on.

If it all works out you now have a nice core on offense for the next 3-4 years:

Kirk Cousins, Jordan Reed, Josh Doctson, Trent Williams, Brandon Scherff, Morgan Moses and Jamison Crowder.

Hopefully, Matt Jones or another back like Marshall comes along to nail down that job as well.

I just read where opening negotiations with Andrew Luck are starting at a minimum of $25 million a year and going up. And that's on a long term deal.

I think you're reading things incorrectly. There's no reason for either side to sign this second.

I suspect Scot will get a long term deal done right before the deadline.

Somewhere around $19.5 million a year.

My impression from last year and what's going on in the OTA's is that Kirk's good when the tools are around him are good, and he's so-so when talent changes.

That's the way it usually works for any QB in the league.

And, as crazy as it may sound, that'll seem like a bargain in a few years.

I didn't see Cousins do anything last year that a smart, prepared quarterback with an NFL arm and decent mobility can't achieve over a 16 game schedule with the talent he he has in the passing game.

So, I don't think you are going to see a great drop-off in his productivity in 2016.

This was NOT a case like RG3 where his success was based upon a gimmick or new offensive alignment that took the league a year to catch up with.

Gruden runs a traditional NFL passing game playbook which is very similar to what half a dozen successful teams run year after year.

If we have a losing season this year, do you really believe Kirk Cousins survives? He's going to make $20 million this year.

Yes. Short of some epic 5 INTs/game x numerous games implosion by Cousins, he's our QB of the future - period. And there's zero reason to suspect that's even possible.

My impression from last year and what's going on in the OTA's is that Kirk's good when the tools are around him are good, and he's so-so when talent changes.

I'm still not sold on the guy as being the answer. And, not getting that contract done, puts me pretty close to what McCl is thinking. If the FO really thought he was a top 5 guy in the NFL, that contract would be done.

It's called 'negotiating'. I guess the team's logic here should be 'Hey, let's throw a massive contract at this guy NOW because, if we don't, that will send a message to fans that we don't believe in the guy.' Yeah - that sound perfectly plausible tr1.

The team (and Cousin's agent) are doing exactly what should be expected and exactly what every good NFL front office does. They didn't need to make a huge deal this year. They franchised him. That makes Cousins happy as he's getting a helluva salary this season. And it gives them time to work out a long-term deal that not only Cousins and his agent will be happy with, but which is as cap friendly and manageable for the team as possible. It's smart. I know we're not used to seeing 'smart' from our front office. So it may strike us as 'curious' and 'unfathomable' - but that's what it is.

You're not a voice of reason in a sea of homerism. You're a guy looking to find fault everywhere you can find it.

I don't disagree on seeing is believing. You aren't getting criticized for your 'different perspective'. You get criticized because of your incessantly negative viewpoint - no matter what the circumstances. You think you're Judd Nelson in the Breakfast Club. But you're Eeyore. You're the prison guard in Shawshank bitching about his inheritance. Sorry - but that's your shtick. Try and post a positive post for every 10 of the other kind. Maybe you'll get a better reception.

You get to post whatever you want just like everyone else. And we get to react to it.

I'm not ready to anoint us a SB winning dynasty for years to come either. But I'm pretty encouraged. And if you aren't, I just don't get that. Or maybe I do :)

I guess that's better than sticking my head in the sand.

We've had upticks in the franchise before. When we string two or three good seasons together, I'll be convinced. Is that such an outrageous demand for my homerism?

The team gets a new GM, has a great draft and immediately goes 9-7. Nevertheless, it's not at all outrageous to think "well, that's a good start. Hopefully they can keep it going but I'll believe it when I see it. Two or three good seasons should do it."

That's not you. That's most of the rest of us. Those of us who are sold on the team's success already (not mentioning any names *coughMcD5cough :) ) get plenty of grief too.

I continue to be criticized for a different perspective on my team and it's front office and owner. We franchised a guy who had seven good games down the stretch. I just happen to think that doesn't earn him top five QB pay.

At this very moment, Kirk Cousins' $19.5 million represents the 9th highest QB cap hit for 2016. Is that ok? It's a one year deal and he's the 9th highest paid guy. If he signs a long term deal that number will most certainly move down on the list for this year. You do realize that, don't you?

He's been inconsistent in the OTAs.

Well, there you go again.

Reports out of the OTAs have all been positive about Kirk, from command of the offense, poise, leadership and performance.

The whole gist of your negativity boils down to "I'll keep being negative on everything until we start winning."

So, you just basically self described yourself as a fair weather fan. The first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem.

Baby steps............

He's got the second highest base salary in the League...though it may be the highest after TC. Is he worth that? Hey, it ain't my money, but if it were me, having seen just seven good games where we didn't beat any teams with winning records, well, I'd say no.

I think we've got a Romo on our hands. And, that's not meant as a compliment.

But, make no mistake, I'll always concede that I hope to gawd I'm wrong...and, I'll apologize for being a doubter if he really improves, but let's see what the season brings. He's been inconsistent in the OTAs.

Base salaries mean nothing as far impact on the team. It's the cap hit that matters.

There's a reason why players don't like to get franchised. They get no signing bonus (hence the lower cap hit), no long term contract, no guarantee they'll stay on the team.

Refusing all of those benefits to Cousins, and having him counting 9th against the cap of QBs currently under contract, you think the REDSKINS are getting the bad end of the deal?

Cousins' situation is the very epitome of "we're not sold on this guy." The only other realistic "no confidence" move would be to just let him go.

Unless you are advocating that I'm not sure what your beef is.
