Kirk Cousins Development Tracker

Nothing would impress me more than to hear we've extended Cousins for another two years at $10 million a year. But we've probably already missed that boat. In his mind, I'm sure he's now playing for a 5 year, $17 million a year opportunity. He won't settle for $10 million.

His good health is probably the most overlooked thing about him and it likely makes him the best opportunity we have next year.

There's not a person here who wouldn't agree - we need to see a lot more games like yesterday's before anointing Cousins 'the guy'. I think what we are seeing is a guy who's playing better and better as the season progresses. Chalking his game yesterday up to a bunch of lucky YAC gained on 1-3 yard passes behind the LOS is inaccurate - sorry.

If he goes for that much, you tag him non-exclusive... Let him negotiate his market value while you retain his rights. We should have plenty of cap room next year, so tagging him and releasing Robert isn't out of the question. Transition tag would cost us about $20M for a 1 year move & $24M for Franchise tag.

If you aren't sold on Cousins, a one year $20-24M investment is better than anything long term. At least you get tag compensation if you let him sign with another team on a long-term deal.
 
Smooty, no one begrudges you your opinion. Truly. But to see anyone so vigorously "yeah butt-ing" a perfect passer rating day like the one Kirk had yesterday, with numbers replicated only 13 times in NFL history, is more than a little amusing. :)

See, this is the type of post that really enhances the conversation. Bravo!

My point was that we won...that's always a good thing.

We won yesterday! I was so happy to be present at a game that we won so handsomely. Kirk Cousins played lights out against a team he is supposed to play lights out.

We handed the ball off to Morris 15 times, Jones 11 and Thompson 2 and we won by 33 points...something that was said could not be done by us against an NFL team.

Savor this win, we may not have another this year like it. That's what I am going to do...really has less to do with Kirk's performance, more to do with the fact I saw a total team effort yesterday. Does it matter that it was against a terrible defense? Not to me...a win is a win. But...go ahead, find all the flaws you want...you'll always find them if you look hard enough.

And...you go ahead and continue the narrative for me that I just want Kirk Cousins to win, when the reality is I just want the Washington Redskins to win.
 
Ok, just for fun I Googled 'yards after catch stat' and I found this page:

Not sure how accurate it is. I know personally, I would have thought our yards after catch was relatively high over the course of the season, and maybe I'm reading the chart completely wrong, but this chart, if I'm reading it right, has us at third to LAST in yards-after-catch, per reception.

Can that possibly be right?
 
Seems about right to me Henry. We don't have break away receivers, which is one of the reasons we don't have much of a downfield game. Of course, you probably shouldn't consider that when looking at the stats. Only the QB contributes to the downfield game. ;)
 
If things continue as they are, what are the chances we could bring RG3 back as a backup for $3 or $4 million a year?

Or would some team like the Eagles offer him $5 million for a one year "prove it" deal?

He's ranked 15th in 'Air Yards per Attempt.'

As has been said before on this thread and others, no one thinks that Kirk is the second coming of Joe Montana.

Right now he's our QB and as such (like Boone said) there's a list of things I look for.

Does he have the team? I believe that this team has got behind him. The body language of this team is that of a group who trusts him and is pulling with him. Not a whisper that I've heard of any dissent in the ranks

Is he hurting the team? Well he was when he was throwing multiple interceptions. But he looks to be well on the way to fixing that. I don't expect perfect games, no QB never throws a pick. But if he can just curb the binges I'm happy.

Is he avoiding sacks and negative plays. Yes

Is he managing the offence well? Yes and seemingly more comfortable every week.

Is he staying healthy etc etc.

These are all things that this team has struggled with so much in recent years.

YAC is way down my list. The fact is he's getting the ball to receivers, TEs and RBs in good places and without turning the ball over.

He's still young and he's obviously still developing. Plus we've got key players coming back from injury. He's trending in a positive direction and the deeper ball may well come with confidence, time and maybe some key off season additions.

Right now he's managed the team beautifully for 3 weeks now and finally showing some consistency. He'll still have ups and downs, even the best do. But I like where he's heading.

And as mentioned, even Manning couldn't pitch a perfect game against the Saints and the Giants are supposedly a better team and he's a veteran Super Bowl winning QB.
 
The idea that he is not trying to throw down field to limit mistakes is not correct either. It makes no sense. No one was bemoaning INT's on deep balls. It was the INT's due to bad decisions under pressure. What we haven't been seeing, really all season long, but even more so of late, is Kirk tossing up dumb balls. How do the stats account for that? How do the stats account for how calm he was in the endzone on the play he was wrapped up and he dumped it off to Morris to get out of trouble. How do the stats account for his late game drives, winning, or nearly so late in several games. How do they account for him rebounding from a mistake with solid play and not cratering. I don't hear commentators and media commenting on how he's missing a ton of downfield open receivers. The Stat game is always driven by a single minded agenda, either totally for or totally against a player. They are only one indicator, and you must view them in the full context of the team, game, drive etc.... Personally, I never go look at stats. I can see plainly enough how a player/team is doing by watching the game? Lurk has to prove he can perform at a high level consistently. To me, that's the biggest thing he's yet to demonstrate, but I think he started doing so 3 games ago.
 
I think Smoot has a Point :)) see what I did there?). Cousins has played well the last few games, but I don't think it is unreasonable to want more before we commit the $17M+/year McD is suggesting. In fact, given Cousins' ups and downs historically, I think we'd be a little stupid not to want more.

And you know what? If he levels out and plays really well the rest of the way and we have to pay him more for it, I'm OK with that. I really am. I suppose we could try to get him to agree to a Tannehill/Kapernick extension where we hold all the power going forward - if he agrees to that, then sure, sign him. But he may want more than we're comfortable with right now, and that's OK too.

Let it play out, see how he manages the remainder of our games, and judge from there. If Scot can get him on a team-friendly deal now, great. I'm sure he's trying to do just that.
 
More 'stats' mongering, looks like Brady and Brees depend on YAC a lot too.

Yep, that's a big if but both of those QB's have been there done that and operate very similar to what Kirk is doing.

Of course both of those guys can pop off the big ones, haven't seen Kirk do that nearly enough with consistency to anoint him the next coming of..... which has actually been submitted on these boards before as I recall.

As far as extending Kirk, if the football guys feel he's the answer for the immediate future as this process continues then go for it. Let Kirk settle in with the full support of the team and see where he takes us as pieces are added. Probably won't need to do a monster deal to get it accomplished.
