The Gruden Files - Year Two

The jump in numbers is startling isn't it? LOL

TBF though, if we'd have consistently kept those numbers down to the first half levels we'd have allowed a TOTAL of only 74 points over 6 games. Which would put us Number 1 in the league. (Ironically, the NY Jets are number 1 in points allowed at just 75 over 5 games).

And if we'd have kept up the stats from the first 3 games we'd have given up 118 points total in 6 games. Which would have put us around 6th best in the league.

It's all about those second halves.... :(

Well you can do it the other way around. Build a stable organisation and win with it regardless of QB.

We did it in the Gibbs years with Williams and Rypien. The stability was provided by other aspects of the team from the coaching down. Sometimes I wonder what we'd have achieved through those years if we'd had a truly star QB. could you imagine if Gibbs had had a Montana or a Marino or an Elway...

Anyhow. I know Gruden ain't Gibbs and I don't think we're going to get a coach of that caliber walking through those doors anytime soon, but I'm tired of the carousel across the whole organisation. Unless Gruden loses the locker room a la Shannahan, I'd like to stick out this current course and trust that McLoughlin will come good and deliver us some stability across the player base and cross my fingers and hope we find a QB worthy of the team we build.

And I think we're heading in that direction.

I'm wondering how much of Gruden's stubborn support of Cousins is coming from someone like McLoughlin saying "We gotta stop sinking our own ship here! Stay the course!"

You can say that again. :)

And I think it's also what I was saying ... only without all the extra words.

Gents,

You are 100% right. It can be done the other way.

But not easily.

Consider all the Hall of Fame coaches out there. Gibbs is the only one to win a championship with 3 different QBs. The ONLY one. Parcells is the only other one I know of who did it with more than one QB.

Shula had Greise. Noll had Bradshaw. Landry had Staubach. Lombardi had Starr. Walsh had Montana. Shanahan had Elway.

Hall of Fame QBs all.

Not easy at all.

Knight....good stuff on those stats you previously posted. Yes the games are won in the second half. When watching NFL games I never get excited about first half scores. It always seems to go a different way the second half. Except Redskins games I get excited in first half then the letdown.

Jerry Jones. :) buhahahahahaahh

Funny stuff Stevenaa on the Jerry Jones GM statements. Being where you are located, I know you listen to it all the time on the ticket. You had to have heard the last time he said some stuff, then his last line was "I don't know what I just said". that cracked me up to no end.

He's not all there. Steven Jones is slowly taking over.

I thought I was clear and said so. I'll say it again, I don't know the guys available for McClou to bring in and try out, but if we aren't bringing up the practice squad on the roster, (and quess what, someone thought they were good enough to keep, ) then we need to move the practice squad out. The practice squad is not for practice. It is for stashing potential players that you have rights to and can come in and help out. I don't see it. I don't see us bringing in players to try out. As fans we don't know squat and can't evaluate from the couch. But lets see some evidence of roster manipulation.

I'm in Dallas unfortunately, and I see jerry bringing in players right and left, several at a time to try out. They have virtual try out camps. Their defense is filled with "no name" players I never heard of. They turned out serviceable. In this league, there are tons of players. You have to judge the veterans to see what they have left in the tank, you have to judge the injury rehabs to see if anything left for a couple games. You have to bring in undrafted free agents to try out, there are a ton of them. To say no one is available is simply not true. They may not be real good players, but some can be overachievers, and that's something this team needs for sure. Dammit if Jerry can do it for crying out loud McClou should run circles around him. One mistake a GM can make is to "wait on an injury player to get better". That is a recipe for disaster. Like Gruden said, Desean less than 100% can't be played due to the risk. So we wait to be eliminated then get excited about him returning? I don't think so. Get me another receiver, I don't know the rules but if we can steal one from another teams practice squad for the active roster, we are in a better position at least temporarily. By the way, there is a IR designation as a temporary deal where the player sits but can come back.

sorry for the rant, I'm all about doing something, not sitting back watching us go in the tank. What's the worse that can happen, we lose game? Pullleaze. We need our GM and coaches to be just as aggressive as they are asking the players to be tough and gut it out.

Now a lot of what I just said does not smack of a rebuild. It speaks directly to helping win games right now, filling out the roster with players, not guys waiting to heal. Like Boone pointed out, we are one game out of first. We need to get our act together at the coaching level, player level, and front office has to be leaders as well. No skating on games just because the opponent has a losing record. I'm not criticizing McClou, but I'll ride his ass just as hard as anybody else in the organization. And he dam well better not be taking a drink when he watches us play. Let me do the drinking.

BGO first.... responding to own post.

Didn't we sign a RB yesterday? I want the locals to tell me who else was brought in or did we just plug it.

McD is notorious for quoting himself lol

Frankly, we have the most dysfunctional and drama filled team currently in the NFL. I didn't create any of it. I hate it. It makes it difficult to follow this team and talk to my friends about it.

We continue to lose. We all know Kirk is just a guy. What does seem apparent, though, is that the organization has written off this season probably as a combination of rebuild and injuries.

There's just no accountability. But, I guess we can just keep blaming the wind.

You mistake my frustration with you perception that I hate my team.

I think you are a closet optimist TR. :) Did you really think this team had any chance of competing this year? I don't see how anyone could be too frustrated that a team not expected to go .500, that got decimated by a ton of injuries at key positions, is floundering. If you are overly frustrated this team is not winning, then you are as much to blame for your unrealistic expectations as the team. This year didn't happen in a vacuum. I get irritated and frustrated during games when they piss away opportunities, but as far as the season goes, I decided in advance there was too much to overcome, too much change needed to expect a winning team for at least 2 years. Parity makes it easy for teams to appear closer than they really are.

The team is a walking injury and it is a rebuild that is going to take a few years. That's the reality of the situation. There has been accountability. Maybe for the first time in a long time. Poor performing players are being moved on and switched out. Can you say "Touchback" :) We can now. Used to be a dirty word around here. There's a move to younger players and acquiring quality in the draft. We see some of that playing out on the field already.

No ones blaming the wind. We all blame the organizational turmoil that has surrounded this team since Danny took over. This is the first year, the very first, where the organization has a structure that has succeeded elsewhere. We have a GM picking talent in the draft. He's given the coach the proper latitude to start the players he decides on. A GM who has laid out a plan to success. One that encompasses years and one that will require several to pay off.

Gruden still looks completely lost on the sidelines most of the time. Hopefully this little win here and comeback gets his head back in to it and he stops freezing up when he should be coaching.

I know the look you're talking about, and at times it brings back fears of Jim Zorn.

I think it's more likely that look comes from the fact that he's listening to two other coaches in his ear, and the three are planning the next play. That, and everything else he is monitoring. Can we execute an onside kick? etc.

I liken it to when I see someone at the gym with headphones on. And they're just listening to music in their ear--not coaching a team.

I certainly believe he's engaged. And he went HAM on the team at halftime.

Trent Williams confirmed #Redskins got the hair dryer treatment from coach Jay Gruden at the half #livid

What is the hair dryer treatment? I probably should know this.

Personally, I thought Gruden's onside kick call and the last touchdown play call were a stroke of genius....what made it genius and what made it work was the timing of the call, not to mention the guts it took to make them.

noun

(Brit, informal) (esp in sport) the practice of shouting at someone at close quarters in order to express one's displeasure at something he or she has done.

From hairdryer + treatment (the image being of shouting at someone so close to their face that your hot breath could dry their hair)

Sir Alex Ferguson is famed for his hair-dryer treatment, an up-close lecture generously given to underperforming players.

The "hairdryer treatment" name came from Mark Hughes, nickname: Sparky. Mark Hughes, former United striker and now Wales manager, said: "He would stand nose-to-nose with you and just shout and bawl, and you would end up with your hair behind your head." Mark Hughes gave the nickname to the fearsome decibel-busting rollickings dished out by the boss over his 20 years in charge at Manchester United.

You may remember, about the time Gruden came onboard, a memorable vid popped up here showing Gruden going on a major, profanity-filled locker room rant aimed at a team severely underperforming on the field. As I recall it was pretty well received as being indicative of a hard-nosed no nonsense coach giving the "Hair dryer treament" to players not playing to their abilities.

Was it something like that in that locker room at halftime Sunday I wonder?

Whatever it was it worked admirably.

Best across-the-board halftime adjustment I've seen this season whatever it was.

It's been a rough year but I think the team responds. Interesting stat heard on the radio today. Point differential. This year we're at -4 through 9 games. Last year it was -137 and the year before -144. I was shocked with the last two years. I think this improvement that Gruden should get some props for.

I'd like to get all excited about the trend, but we're an inconsistent team in a weak division.

The sign of improvement for an up and coming team is what happens after Thanksgiving.

True, but I don't expect a whole lot. We're still weak on the lines, so we will go down to better teams. Regardless, that is a tremendous swing in differential and I think it demonstrates a higher level of competitiveness. If the OLine had held up, I think we're two wins better.
