Random Commanders Thoughts

I disagree. THe NBA was on top in the mid 90's with Jordan at his apex, and everyone figured that would last forever. 5 years later with the Nets/Lakers Finals, ratings plummeted during the "thug" era. Nothing lasts forever.

I understand the NFL might think it is invincible, and all available information would actually support that right now. But downfalls can sneak up on anyone. The NFL doesn't have to worry about you and me and just about everyone else on this site. But in order to maintain its momentum, the NFL needs to keep those casual fans engaged. The concussion issue isn't helping. Ray Rice really hurt a lot of casual fans. Goodell can't seem to help piling on and making things worse in a lot of people's eyes.

It may not happen tomorrow or next year, but everything is cyclical.

96 years so far is a pretty long cycle.

I don't believe Ray Rice, Ray Lewis or any other Ray means much in the big picture.

Jerry Rice admitted to cheating 15 years ago. No one cares.

Just like no one will care about deflategate 15 years from now.

I think it's more a case of false self-importance with people who threaten to quit watching.

The fact that we are discussing this during business hours on a football site speaks volumes about the national interest level in the sport, and the strength of the league.

Like I said, the NFL isn't worried about those of us on this site. We're, after all, obsessed. If the absurd Cap Penalties didn't drive us off, little more is likely to.

Fantasy Football is an enormous moneymaker for the league - that's where you will see a drop, I'm betting. Before long, it will stop growing, and then start to dip down in popularity. The FF fans don't have a necessary connection to a franchise, and therefore are going to be more susceptible to negative feelings over concussions, Rice, Hardy, et all.

The concussion thing has been mismanaged brutally by the NFL. At some point, I don't know when, but at some point, that will bite them...

I have 3 sons...1.5 of them are big NFL fans. The circle of NFL life will continue. I am not going anywhere unless they force us to change our name or move. But even then I will still watch on Sundays. I will just be the grumpy old man who yells about how things suck now compared to when I was a kid.

In other news, Sen. Harry Reid tries to redirect the focus from the cheating Patriots to the Redskins name, because, once again the NFL is one of the Senate's highest priorities.

I'd fight him. maybe even give him first punch...maybe

Submitting to drug testing is not the same thing as giving your employer carte blanche access to your personal info.

You're right, submitting to drug testing is a more intrusive violation of your privacy. But just to keep it on point, people submit themselves to super extensive background checks, that go as far as pulling up old facebook posts and internet forum accounts. It's his cell phone, not the nuclear suitcase. You guys are splitting hairs, the NFL digs into their personal lives to a galling level on a daily basis. Ask Dez Bryant how he feels about his privacy after literally having a babysitter follow him around 24/7.

The point is neither is Tom Brady required to open up his private life and cell records to the NFL (as evidenced by Brady saying 'no' and them not having them :)) nor does his refusal to abandon privacy equate to guilt. It just doesn't. The NFL has zero right to that information. Them wishing it were so doesn't make it so. Those other instances of acquiescing to their employer, be it drug testing or background checks, those are voluntarily agreed upon - an entirely different matter. It's not splitting hairs, those aren't in any way alike.

I'll tell you the other issue I have with the penalties, they all but exonerated the owner and coaching staff of even knowledge the infraction was occurring, but the penalty goes far beyond Tom Brady. Taking draft picks is an organizational punishment. Sure, they state that the 'organization is responsible for the actions of its players' but that principle isn't applied in other instances where players get fined, suspended, or sanctioned. I'd have been fine with holding Brady accountable, even with a ludicrous 4 game suspension (previously reserved for wife beaters), because at least it punished the offender himself.

If you asked 32 teams if they would pay $1 million, a 1st round pick and 4 games from their QB in exchange for a SB trophy, 32 teams would say yes without even thinking about it.

The Patriots will whine about how unjust this is, the rest of us will talk about asterisks, but at the end of the day this punishment means nothing. It's about nothing. It signifies nothing. Goodell doesn't give a crap about deflated balls or anything else but the bottom line. The only reason any of this is anything is because it got leaked out and the press won't stop talking about it. Just like Rice knocking his fiancé out, or ex-players have brain damage-induced psychotic episodes, the league continues to prove it doesn't care, unless we seem to care, and then they over-react in a effort of pretending to care.

Agreed on all accounts. That's why I'm in favor of disqualifying teams who win by cheating. You now have a loss instead of a win, AND you vacate your Championship. Thats what we do for "non-professional" sports. Sorry, thats the appropriate punishment, including kicking the trainers out of football for life, and giving Brady a year suspension. Otherwise, like you say, the punishment is a hand slap. But what else are we to think. Goodell is on the owners payroll, he can't do any more or they fire him. Goodell is just trying to save face, because he is a screwup. He will never get it right, be his goal is to protect the goose that lays the golden egg. Which is why he's only now trying to get the concussion thing under some kind of control. Its not the lawsuits, its the fact that the sport is too violent and they will never legislate that out of football. The sport is doomed on a long term basis, only the money keeps it afloat. Now they want to try to spice it up with rules changes again to make scoring easy.

Context guys. There are degrees in life. This isn't stealing the other teams playbook, bugging the huddle, it's not even piping in fan noise. It's a QB skirting a pretty minor rule on ball inflation, and doing something that probably is of inconsequential value in the first place. Is it 'cheating'? Of course. But let's have a little perspective. In what universe would vacating a championship be a reasonable response to one player trying to get an edge by removing a couple psi of air??

in 2004 they were caught videotaping the Iggles...the Iggles even said the Pats D was "calling out their plays from the line". That is pretty much stealing a playbook.

its also not so much what he did, but the lies and arrogance behind it. Its like when your mom said, "if you tell me the truth it will go a lot easier on you" the same can be said here for his cheating. Robert Kraft DEMANDED the NFL apologize to the entire organization for even accusing them of this. Why would anyone feel pity for them or not want the harshest punishment possible put on to them?

They've already been severely punished for previous transgressions. I agree they have set themselves up for some of this by the way they carry themselves and respond.

Keep in mind though, the 'investigator' didn't 'prove' an intentional directed rule violation occurred - the report said 'most likely' and 'probably'. Levying the harshest possible penalty in the absence of absolute proof and with a lot of assumption involved, doesn't make a lot of sense to me. The hypocrisy of Goodell hammering them because they weren't immediately forthcoming with the entire truth, it's pretty thick with irony (*cough* elevator video *cough*).

Which of the following statements are true:

A. Tom Brady is a pretty good quarterback.
B. The Patriots cheated.
C. The Hogs were great. One of the best lines in history.
D. The Hogs were cheaters.

All of the above?

Should the 49ers vacate their SBs because Jerry Rice cheated?
Should the Redskins vacate a SB because Mark Schlereth cheated?

What do people want? What is the statute of limitations on going back in time and vacating SBs? What do people believe would be a better solution?

They cheated, they were caught, and they were penalized.

Have we ever told you about Bobby Beathard?

I didn't know the hogs were actually caught by the league cheating.

Oh wait. They didn't?

Hail to the ****ing redskins!

But....our thirst for blood hath not been quenched! We need another sacrifice for the altar of public opinion! The savages must be held off! Cue Harry Reid name change comment.
