Random Commanders Thoughts

Yep. To me Mann's the last top-shelf Redskins DLineman of record.

Which I've found myself thinking about recently for some reason. As much as we've bemoaned our offensive line over the past 20 years, the DL has been even more barren. On offense we've at least had Chris Samuels and Trent Williams to point to.

On D ... not so much.

All the talk this offseason, and even more so the immediate overhaul of the DL under McLoughan, has this ol' Skins fan almost starting to allow himself to look forward to watching us complete up front again in my lifetime.

Pro Bowl nods pretty much support that. Since Diron Talbert in 1974, the ONLY Redskins Defensive Linemen to show up in Hawaii, or wherever, were Dave Butz (1983), Dexter Manley (1986), Charles Mann (1987-89, 1991) and Marco Coleman (2000).

Charles Mann was a very underrated defensive end. He regularly put up 10 sacks, but was a good run defender and could move inside on long yardage downs to rush as a DT when needed.

He also had 2 very good games in Super Bowl XXII and XXVI, which is when you count on your leaders to step up and play big.

Beathard found him in Round 3 out of Nevada Reno.

We need to find productive third rounders like this in 2015.

Isn't this Alfred's contract season? Just gotta feeling that he's going to blow it the hell up this season with fantastic #'s.

Yep, it sure is. Hopefully he does and the team realizes he didn't just do it for the contract but has been solid his whole time.

Morris never had a chance last year. He must have been contacted at or behind the line more than any other prime back in the league.

You look at how much room Murray had last year to run and its not surprising he had the productivity he did.

Griffin's mobility in 2012 covered up for what is and has been a joke of an offensive line here. That was how Morris was able to get 1,613 yards without getting killed.

It wasn't because the offensive line was productive.

That was borne out in 2013 and 2014 when the threat of the qb run was diminished.

These OL we have couldn't win any battles at the line of scrimmage.

No doubt, need to lock the kid up for a full maroon & black career!

I found a stat site that gives an idea of how Morris fared as far as peercentage of rushing attempts that were stuffed behind the line of scrimmage compared to other top RBs.

Here is a screencap showing the top 15 RBs by number of rush attempts and the percentage of those that were stuffed behind the LOS.

Is there anything that shows % contact behind LoS? I know Morris has quite a few times that he made a positive gain after getting tagged a couple yards deep.

Probably not as a collected stat, Shi. This one only gets recorded because the forward progress stops behind the line of scrimmage. I haven't seen or heard of any stat relating to contacts behind the LOS-it would be a bear to try to track and compile such a statistic anyway, I would imagine.

It's really frustrating we keep trying to compete with other teams with a line that really only has one bona fide starter.

Lauvao, Chester, Compton are backups almost anywhere else.

Lichtensteiger is serviceable but has had durability issues.

Sherff, Collins, Erving, etc.

Any of these guys would be a shot in the arm for this offense.

Falcons fan on Facebook talking shit about teams who haven't won anything in 20 years...brings up the skins

I remind him of the seat cushion game and how embarrassing that must be.

He doesn't remember it so I post a link to the YouTube clip.

Post is deleted for some odd reason. He ran away faster than Evander after Gerald Riggs scored

In my recollection the Falcons have never won anything since they entered the league in 1966.

Nope...he tried talking playoff appearances and I reminded him that when you have no trophies you tend to use insignificant stats.

One of my brothers is a Raiders fan & so I tend to like them ever so slightly. We have a lot of similarities with the Raiders & one of them is that we have a rival (an arch rival at that) that has never won anything. We have the Eagles, they have the Chargers. Over the years, I have liked the Chargers less & less & I encountered some Chargers fans a few years ago that were hateful douchebags & had made a comment about how they wished all Raiders fans would die. I kinda responded with a "yeah, I wouldn't want someone reminding me all the time of how insignificant my football team was either." Of course, this started a banter where they proceeded to try to condescend me because I'm a Redskins fan saying things like "y'all haven't been significant in over 20 years" to which I responded, "y'all have NEVER been significant. At least we have something in our trophy case to refer to & no Super Bowl win is irrelevant."

It always seems to me that the teams that have no trophies tend to have the douche....iest fanbases. I haven't had too many issues with Falcons fans, but I think the reason is they have the Braves to fall back on & most of the time, when the football conversation starts to lean against their favor, they go back to the baseball issue. lol That's just been my experience tho.

Best way to shut a charger fan up...and I use this every time:

"We have more super bowl wins in your stadium than you do period."

There is no comeback to that.
