Finding ways to lose

are you for real Lanky? arent you one of the guys who is always saying that even though our defence in the 4-3 tended to give up fewer points, it wasnt a good defence because it didnt get turnovers and allowed teams to control the ball?

Are you for real, Ryman? The reason they had the ball so much was because the O kept turning it over! 4 interceptions (or interseptions, however you spell it up there)! Don't make me pull a MN countdown and give you a "come on, man!" Its apples and oranges.

this is a scheme thing, not an alignment thing, its actually very simple if you pay attention. Letting a team drive the ball up and down the field is bad when you arent protecting a lead. you need to take chances and attack. yes we "held" them to no points, lmao, they were protecting a lead and we should have been trying to cut into it not playing like we were the ones up 20. ffs the only reason we were able to do anything against them was Reid got gunshy with Vick (I think he had a dinger myself because on several plays he looked lost) after we beat him up in the first half.

In case you haven't noticed, the Eagles have been running all over everyone. They were first in the NFL in rushing before this game, and LeSean McCoy was a top 5 or so rusher. And also in case you didn't notice, the Eagles had approximately 23-25 minutes of their 38 min TOP in the first half, so your whole 2nd-half argument is void. Haslett adjusted, and slowed down their offense. And by the way, held them to ZERO POINTS.

I know what I saw. The Iggles pretty much ran all over the defense and mastered the short passing game as well. we took away the deep game.....and were out-coached elsewhere.

I will agree the defense was a lot better than last year's bunch also coached by Haslett. geez...the Iggles had 197 yds rushing! that's quality defense! it's the rushing game we've been pointing to. and I agree with those who said we were never really in the game. the Beck TD was too little...too late. yes...the Offense was much worse. but the defense wasn't exactly stellar either....they were run all over.

EXACTLY. It was a minor miracle that we only lost by 7 points. A miracle due to Haslett and the defense!

ummm the eagles are running all over everyone becuase THEY ARE ALWAYS PLAYING FROM BEHIND. ADD TO THAT VICK INFLATES THE NUMBERS. if we are gonna use what the eagles are doing against everyone else, they are also allowing everyone else to run on them at will. on Offence we should have been able to control the clock and smash them, on defence we should have been able to stop them from driving (they are a big play offence that cant drive the ball) but on both sides we made a lot of guys look better than they are.

or...we were never really in the game cuz the defense didn't have many answers before it was 20-3! yes...I agree...the offense was the main culprit. I just don't think the defense played all that hot either. you're arguing that the defense played well cuz we weren't blown out! here's another thing....I thought the Iggles defense took it to our guys with smash mouth football.....didn't see that from our guys.

again...I'm the first to agree this years D is much better than last years. but...yesterday......I had to turn the TV off after watching one cut back run after the next succeed. after a point...it's coaching when a defense keeps over-persuing and not protecting its gap assignments.

Wow. Playing from behind inflates passing numbers, not running numbers. That's football 101.

I agree, which is why I pin this loss on Rex Grossman and the offense. We should have ran the ball more and kept it out of McCoy's hands. But we didn't, and the defense held together quite nicely. Giving up only 20 points on a day your offense turns the ball over 4 times and generally can't move the ball is pretty impressive, IMHO.

I'm not saying the defense played a perfect game; our D isn't there yet, and still missing some pieces. What I AM saying is that the defense played MORE than good enough to win that game, only giving up 20 points. Not to mention the Eagles 1st TD drive should have never happened...they were assisted by a bogus call on the goal line.

The eagles arent playing from behind they haver led all but one of their games at the end of the third quarter that was the only game they were playing from behind

Man, you guys are rough. Lanky is being pretty straightforward here. Haslett's unit did fairly well, and certainly did what it was supposed to do. Kyle screwed him and lost the game for us, imo. We can all point to poor decisions made by Haslett during different points of the game. But by and large, the defense played fairly well. Some of you are apparently willing to cut Kyle some slack because of personnel deficiencies on the offensive side of the ball; why not Haslett as well? The defense is improving, starting to look good and take shape. That's a good thing.

Its incredible, really. Schwartz's defense in Detroit, with arguably the best DLine in football, has given up 19 points per game (22.2 throwing out the KC game). Haslett's defense has given up over 2 points per game less at 16.6. They are 5-1, we are 3-2; the difference? Playmakers on offense. That's it. No need to look at scheme, Haslett, aggression, depression, elation, look at the offense. End of story!

Game 1: Giants were beat up, and the O put up 21 points (D added 7 for insurance). D held NY to 14 points, enough to win.

Game 2: D gave up 21 points, Rex & the offense gave them a short field on one TD. O scored 22, enough to win.

Game 3: D held Cowboys (30 points against the above Lions) to 18 points, O could barely muster up 16 points despite the Dallas cheerleaders starting in the secondary.

Game 4: The Rams - O dominated but still only mustered 17 points. D held them lifeless Rams to 10.

Game 5: Held the Eagles to 20 points, their second lowest point total of the season. They scored 31, 31, 16, 23 and 24 points before facing the Redskins. Rex gave the ball up 4 times, at least two of which were likely TDs if he threw the ball with any kind of accuracy.

Why did they control the clock? Because we ran the ball only 14 times, and Grossman was too busy throwing interceptions the rest of the time to control it. No, they did not control the clock because of anything Haslett did - if anything, its because of Haslett we were even IN the game. They held an over 2:1 TOP advantage, outgained us by 135 yards, and we had a -3 TO differential. Yeah, losing by 7 was a minor miracle. The only difference between this game and last year's debacle was a solid defense, IMO.

unless we fumbled somewhere it was -2 we intercepted 2 different qbs

Redskins are tied with the Ravens for first in the NFL for the fewest touchdowns allowed this season (8). If the O could anything, we'd easily be 5-0.

not going to let this blow up beyond its true significance. the D is eons ahead of last season....that said, I thought the defense was outplayed Sunday. they obviously weren't helped by the offense......but the Iggles basically handled them in the run game. 197 yards IS A LOT. when they absolutely had to shut the Iggles down to get the ball back with some time...they didn't. simple as that.

Except that its not as simple as that. If Grossman only throws three interceptions, and hits a wide-open Gaffney for 6, or better yet only throws 2 interceptions and they get a field goal out of the tremendous field position the D gave them, we win 23-20. You are missing the point: the defense played good enough to win. And I'll repeat the stat you may have missed: the Eagles got 23-25 of their 38 minutes TOP in the first half - meaning the D slowed them down in the second half. Also helps to have a sustained TD drive, of course.

Lanky, why is it that this defence gets a pass because it has a crappy offence but when you and I argued about Blaches defence, (which had an even worse offence) you didnt take that into consideration?

Btw the defence has improved, but not enough. the offence looked improved but im wondering how much that smoke and mirrors.

.
actually lanky, playing from behind inflates run numbers because teams will get more conservative and play more zone and give up rushing yards to prevent big plays, thats football behind the numbers 201 the advanced class

You couldn't be more wrong. Exhibit A: Cam Newton and the Panthers.

Sorry Ryman but I don't buy that. Teams playing from behind tend to stop running in order to lengthen the game and score faster. At least that is what I observe every Sunday.

For God's sake people.

4 interceptions. You can count the number of times any team, any time, has had their QB throw 4 interceptions, and won, on your fingers.

Could our defense play better? Of course. Is our defense the problem. For God's sake no. If we could field a competent offense consistently, we'd win. Our offense has played mostly flawed football even at it's best, and we've been able to win more than lose. If we had a QB, a little better offensive lineman, and a WR that scared someone, we'd be a sure-fire playoff team with this defense.

I think all we need is a QB, Boone. Not that those other things wouldn't help but with the way the rest of the NFCE is playing right now, solid play from QB position would put this team in the lead to win the Division.
