The 2026 Free Agency Thread

I will freely admit I've been off the board a bit, so if you tapped that name, kuddos to you brother.

It makes sense....

I don't think that was a hard one. And if I recall it wasn't just me. They needed a corner. He played for Daronte. He was available.

But I get how it feels out of the blue -- he's a not a dude who gets discussed much as to the NFL, he's become a below the radar guy.

I now wonder what is going on with Witherspoon?

There had been conversation of the team going with 7 WR's calling Lane a STer.

At the moment, TE Yankoff appears to be having a very good camp. Could they go 4 TE's knowing Yankoff and Chig are somewhat of bigger WR's and shrink the WR group? I don't see Bates and Sinnott going anywhere as they can block at a much higher level than the other two.

Right now the definites in the WR room appear to be Terry, Williams and Dyami. High hopes would be Lane should make the squad and Luke shows up.

Tough call and way too early. It does sound like Diggs is knocking on the door louder

I would look at Lane as a lock to make the squad. He is way too good as a punt returner not to.

Yeah I see him with more juice than the others. Luke, Jefferson and Burks may be battling for one spot. Especially with Diggs looking in

I think Lane makes the team, but I see it the opposite. Luke actually has some real plays under his belt. If he got any better this offseason, he’s a stick around the league guy at WR and his KO duties are a bonus. Lane on the other hand has done zippy other than PR. And reports this morning he dropped a couple more in practice today including a would be TD. Again.

If it were up to me, Lane is below the cut line at the moment.

I agree with this. Luke has had some impact as a receiver catching deep balls, scoring a few touchdowns, and seems to have good hands. Lane has had problems with drops and fumbles. Going on today’s reporting, it sounds like both have picked up where they left off.

One thing I will say is both Luke and Jaylin are special teams contributors. Lane had those two punt returns last season, and Luke is a good kick returner and has made some tackles covering kicks.

I would expect both to stick around for the length of their rookie contracts given how high they were drafted and that they have contributed, but the WR room is awfully crowded, so we’ll see.

My issue here is that we already have a weak WR corps and that is still true even if we sign Diggs (which I think will happen). Terry is a weak 1. Diggs is a weak 2. Williams is a rookie. Dyami is a sprinter. Luke is TBD. Those guys are all making the team. Then you got Burks, Jefferson, and Lane. I honestly don't care about any of them. Jefferson seems redundant to Dyami, but is at least a professional WR. I'm keeping either him or Burks (who is a borderline professional WR and can't stay healthy) but again, neither of them matter to me. I guess you can keep Lane over both and roll 6 deep, and find guys off the street if injuries crop up during the season.

The real problem though is the whole position is a bit underwater and that's WITH Diggs. Without him, it's submerged. I'm more inclined to accept a pure special teams guy like Lane if the rest of the group is strong.

The Commanders have a plan at wide receiver. But is it good enough?

In an ideal world, the Washington Commanders would have a pair of proven No. 1 receivers who could be used interchangeably on the right and left sides of the field to give quarterback Jayden Daniels more options in the pass game.

Ideal would be nice. Ideal would be easier.

But ideal hasn’t been Washington’s reality for most of this century (and beyond), and it’s fair to wonder if the team is headed for another season without ample pass-catching help.

The Commanders’ overall talent and depth at receiver have been concerns for much of the last few years and reached a tipping point last season when Terry McLaurin and Noah Brown missed a combined 20 games because of injuries. But after general manager Adam Peters admitted at season’s end that their absences offered “a good lesson for sure,” the team still hasn’t acquired — at least, as of Monday morning — a second proven playmaker in the pass game to complement McLaurin.

The Commanders changed systems and play callers, and overhauled much of their roster this offseason, and yet the biggest storyline facing the team for much of the offseason was whether it would sign one of the top remaining free-agent receivers, such as Stefon Diggs or Brandon Aiyuk, if the San Francisco 49ers cut him loose.

Three days into training camp, that what-if is as relevant as ever. Will the Commanders add another veteran receiver? Should they?

It’s too early to make any broad judgments about the roster and its fit within first-year offensive coordinator David Blough’s system; the Commanders’ first fully padded practice is Monday, and three practices in the ramp-up portion of camp hardly show much.

But context also matters.

...Injuries tested Washington’s depth across the board last season, and its receivers certainly weren’t the only reason the team finished 5-12. But finding another pass-catching threat — be it a wideout, tight end or a running back — was a stated priority for Washington going into the offseason, and its moves in free agency and the draft did little to quash any outside concern.

After moving on from receiver Deebo Samuel, who recently reunited with the San Francisco 49ers, the Commanders signed veteran wideouts Dyami Brown, Van Jefferson and Treylon Burks — all to one-year deals for the veteran’s minimum.

Washington can point to 2024 to support its claim that it can succeed without a proven “No. 2” on the roster. Olamide Zaccheaus, an unheralded offseason signing, proved to be a key contributor throughout that season, and there’s no reason to think any of Washington’s additions this year couldn’t do the same.

But that model also required Daniels having the greatest rookie season of any quarterback and leading the team in rushing yards as well as passing yards, and for the team to have nearly everything fall in its favor; it won six games (playoffs included) on the last play from scrimmage.

On the other hand, Washington knows first-hand the risk in not having a deep and proven receiving corps. McLaurin, who will be 31 in September, was healthy for all but three games in his career before suffering a quad injury early last season and missing seven games. Should he suffer another injury and miss an extended period this season, Washington would lose its primary playmaker outside of Daniels.

Signing Diggs wouldn’t guarantee Washington a second playmaker. He’ll be 33 in November and has had his share of off-field concerns.

I dont care what you say, nobody had that name on their Bingo card

Luke and McCaffery are locks.

Terry, McCaffery, Lane and Williams are all locks.

Burks/Van Jefferson and DBrown are probably competing for 2 spots.

McCaffery was a 3rd round pick and the primary kick returner and Lane was a 4th round pick last year and a Dynamic punt returner. Neither of those guys are in jeopardy of not making the roster.

Edit to add: teams don’t cut 4th round players in their second year unless they are super huge enormous busts who can’t play and can’t develop. It’s really rare for a 4th rounder not to get 2 full years and likely a third.

3rd rounders typically get 3 years at a minimum unless they are complete and total bums.

I sure hope we don't find ourselves in a spot where this looks intriguing to AP:

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports free agent TE Zach Ertz (ACL) is “cleared for all football activities.”

Ertz tore his ACL in Week 14 last season with the Commanders. Schefter reports the 35-year-old is ready for football activities and was catching passes from Andrew Luck at Stanford on Tuesday. He caught 50 passes for 504 yards and four touchdowns last season, seeing at least 70 targets in each of the last two seasons with the Commanders. Ertz has expressed a desire to continue playing and Schefter reports the veteran is “expected to be ready to sign in mid-August.” His top-15 fantasy tight end days are behind him, but Ertz can certainly offer some help in the tight end landscape this season, pending his landing spot

Yeah Luke had a great day yesterday putting a much better light. Hopefully he can keep up this momentum.

My point was if the decision is to keep 4 TE's then that probably means 6 not 7 WR's. Add in Diggs lurking to occupy a spot and it could lead to those other receivers fighting for only one position.

I don't really want us to sign him either. But that doesn't alter the fact that he would immediately be the best TE on the roster.
