Random Commanders Thoughts

It is tempting. I have a long standing rule against buying active players' jerseys. It's mostly superstition. That said, I don't own any Commander's gear and $15 is an amazing price.

FYI, there
I still think a lot of my questions surrounding the WR2 spot have less to do with thinking that you need a stud at WR2 and more to do with being unsure what Terry's production will be like going forward. Terry is technically a WR1 but always been a sort of fringe Top 10 WR where he has some numbers to suggest yes some to suggest no. If the WR1 on this team was a no doubter Top 5 WR stud in his prime or at least on his ascension trajectory as player I think that changes a lot of discussion about the need for something better to fill out the WR room as a whole. Terry still has productive seasons left in him but I am not sure how many more seasons it is ideal that he is the WR the offense is relying on.
I get that concern. I would point, however, to 2 teams last season who played deep into the playoffs (one the SB) who's top WR was basically a 1000 yard guy, and the second WR was somewhere between "meh" and good.

New England:
Diggs had ~1000 yards
Hunter Henry (TE) was next with 768
Boutte 551 yards
Mike Collins 550 yards
DeMario Douglas 450 yards.

They played in the SB. May had 4,394 yards total, only 1 1000 yard receiver. But the big reason they made the SB was because they had an absolutely outstanding defense, so the offense didn't have to score 30 points a game and they could still win. PPG is not the be-all, end all defensive stat, but the Pats were 4th in PPG at 18.8.

Also, with those WRs, the Patriots also had the second highest offensive PPG in the league at 28.8. Simple math, when you score ~29 points a game and give up 19 points a game, you win a lot of games.

Denver:
Courtland Sutton 1017 yards
Troy Franklin 709 yards
Evan Engram (TE) 461 yards
Pat Bryant 378 yards

Bo Nix passed for 3,931 yards and also only had 1 1000 yard receiver. The Broncos also had an outstanding defense. They ranked 3rd in PPG, at 18.3.

Denver had an offense that was ranked middle of the pack, 14th, in offensive PPG, at 23.6. However, that means they're still, on average outscoring their opponents by 5 points a game, and that's going to win you a lot of games.

For comparison, Washington ranked 27th in PPG at 26.5.

For where we are now, this is the formula Washington has to follow. Would it be great to have another consistent, proven WR opposite Terry? I don't think anybody would argue the contrary. However, you can have REALLY good offenses and make deep runs in the playoffs without it.

If we follow the New England model, Terry gets his 1,000 yards, Chig gets 700, some combination of Burks/DBrown/McCaffery/Lane make up the 3 NE receivers who got somewhere around 400 yards. There is also a real possibility in this offense, you cold see more 3 TE sets and Sinnott and Bates might get more yards than expected. The Patriots also rushed for 128 yards per game. That was good for 6th in the NFL.

To me, at least this year, that's the formula: Run the ball well, spread the wealthy between Terry, Chig, Slot (probably Williams), RB (probably white), get contributions from the depth pieces at WR, play good defense, go to the SB. And you might see that last part as hyperbole, but last year, the Patriots literally did exactly that. And our WRs and TEs this year might be better than theirs last year. They clearly didn't like their receiving squad, they haven't re-signed their #1 WR and maybe trying to trade #2.

The big question is if the defense can take a big step forward to allow that formula to take form. If not, it's going to be a tough year. It's one of the reasons why I'm so concerned about CB. I think they have a really good shot to be really good on defense, but if they have to play PS level players at CB, the rest of the scheme/players might just not matter and it's going to be a disaster.

And FWIW, if either Diggs or Sutton got hurt, I think both New England and Denver are basically cooked on offense.

OMG, i can NOT with idiots anymore regarding the name change. A “redskins or bust!!!” person yesterday tweeted quote-tweeted a video that was posted in February from the crowd at the stadium at the draft day party when we drafted RG3. The tweet from February: Jayden wants a crowd like he had in 2024, he needs to tell the owner to change the name back to redskins” (which already makes no sense, because the crowd he had in 2024 happened under the current name.

The quote-tweet from yesterday said “agreed. You want the fanbase to back you up? Bring back the name and logo”. I reply today “oh yeah, i forgot the name was redskins in 2024. Oh wait…..it wasn’t, and the stadium crowd was STILL huge!”

Which leads to this LOVELY (🙄) exchange with an idiot for most of the day.

Idiot: “wearing mostly skins gear”

Me: “The point, which you clearly missed, is the stadium was PACKED in 2024, even with the name being commanders, due to Jayden and the team winning games and scoring points. Meaning, it doesn’t matter what the name is, fans will fill the stands for a team that’s WINNING”

Idiot: “Yeah well...in 2024 post Tampa playoff win, 90% of the fans had Skins gear on, were mocking Commanders fans as Commies, and all sang its anthem exiting the field.”

Me: “So they’re douchebags, basically. Because normal people would just let people sing whichever version of the song they feel like singing, without mocking them. You’re defending douchebags”

Idiot:
“Do you see the hate you have for Skins fans? There was no vote or say amongst their fanbase, let alone season ticket holders.
Snyder picked the most offensive name and title for NA's he could have, judging from history. To make matters worse, you erase the past.”

more idiot: “If I hear another person tell me that the Commanders won 3 Superbowls, I may not hold back on them, slap em and call them a Commie or a Marxist”

He then proceeded to try telling me that “If the Oilers won a SB, you would not see Titans gear sold stating that nonexistent team won it.” And that the Houston oilers aren’t the same as the Tennessee titans.

🤦🏻‍♂️

1,000 yards is a nice round arbitrary number, but that post feels like it’s treating the weapons thing a little disingenuously.

4 receivers over 500 yards for the Pats, and a 5th at 450 yards. Plus another combined 500+ yards from their top two RB’s

Now check out our depth chart. Most of our non-Terry’s, aside from Chig, have never even hit 300 yards, or haven’t in many years in the case of Van Jefferson, or have no history in the league.

They could break out like some of the Pats players did. But it’s hoping for a new outcome

It’s not all about how many 1,000 yard receivers a team has.

Holy shit, your posting cadence just made me time travel and have a realization. You’re CooleyFan, aren’t you? Jesus you’re still having pointless arguments on social media with strangers and then posting about them

……i can neither confirm nor deny this accusation

Shockingly enough, I’ve dialed back on sharing my Twitter beef with the message board (here and ES) but man, some of them are just so wild nobody would believe them otherwise 😂

What I was replying to was a post specifically about not having a receiver that was a notch better than Terry. My point was, you don’t need a 1300 yard receiver to have a really good season or a good offense.

It actually had less to do with the WR2 and down than it did the WR1.

Wait. Are you saying it’s true?

And if so, Conn, I’m damn impressed. Holy cow.

Relieve your burdens, you don't need to hide from the BO staff. They wouldn't care about your ES days.

But also, relieve your burdens and stop worrying about who you talk to on Twitter. As the years go by, the chances that you have been arguing with AI accounts has increased considerably.

I have decided to just stay out of the FA thread because it's basically turned into hand ringing about the WR2 position. I just can't handle it anymore.

My request: can we not turn this thread into another thread on the WR2?

And I'm going to show extraordinary restraint, which for those who know me, is rare, and not even comment on JP's post. (Gads, this is hard.)

...so you're here for Aiyuk talk? 😉

Just another day on the job

Perhaps Zach Ertz would be interested in holding a clipboard this season?

From what I read, they had suspended him quietly during minicamps so they obviously have a plan. I agree though. This timing stinks especially as we do have some young TEs who need to be coached up.
