Daronte Jones and the Defensive Staffing Thread

What a transition the defense has already experienced personnel wise.

The players they added appear to all be really good fits for Daronte's new look D.

Odafe Oweh - EDGE (LA Chargers) - 4yr $100M
K'Lavon Chaisson - EDGE (Patriots) - 1yr $12M
Charles Owenihu - DE (Chiefs) - 1yr $7M
Tim Settle - DT 3yr $24M
Leo Chenal - LB (Chiefs) - 3yr $24.75M
Nick Cross - S (Colts) - 2yr (up to) $14M
Amik Roberston - CB (Detroit) - 2yr $15M

That group represents more team speed, better tackling, better hitting, more pressure, better coverage (I think), younger, just more talented in general. All that and I am sure there will be more improvements coming.

No one can say this wasn't a well identified group and certainly gives Daronte and his staff opportunity for success.

Now it will be up to mold them into his vision

This might sound petty, and I know he is just a small piece but I really like Owenihu and wish they signed him for more than one year.
 
No question the front office has done a great job upgrading the talent on Defense, and I’m really looking forward to the aggressive blitzing scheme that DJ is bringing. Would be awesome to see Caleb Downs in the middle of it all directing traffic and making plays.

I’m pretty thrilled with the defensive overhaul. Add a good corner (bummed we lost out on Woolen) and this looks like a pretty high end defense on paper. Would love another quality safety and a stud DT as well, but that’s sort of nitpicking (and a lot to ask)… though it’s not unreasonable to think we could land a quality safety in the draft.
 
Setting aside that there may be a 'bust' or two lurking in most expert's 'Top 10' list (and yeah, that's a big thing to set aside, lol...)

I really feel like we are in a 'can't lose' proposition at pick 7. If they draft Love, or Tate, or Downs, or Styles (and I have to think it will be one of those 4) I think we will very likely get a difference-making talent.
 
When was the last time Washington had a safety that was worth a damn?

2007.

That's 18 years plus and counting. If Downs is there we should take him and smile and move on.

I am assuming that Love, Bailey are gone by pick #7 in any event.

I mean we can expand this to almost every position on the field. Our last four first team all-pro players:

Jeremy Reaves (2022)
Brandon Scherff (2020)
Matt Turk (1996)
Brian Mitchell (1995)

Three of the last 4 are special teamers.

We’ve had 10 players ALL TIME make 5 or more Pro Bowls.

Len Hauss
Gene Brito
Sammy Baugh
Charley Taylor
Chris Hanburger
Ken Houston

Were before 1980…

The only ones to make 5 Pro Bowls from 80 on are:

Darrell Green (only defensive player)
Brandon Scherff
Trent Williams
Chris Samuels

No offensive skill position guy has made 5+ Pro Bowls since Charley Taylor made his fifth in 1975.

All time rushing we’ve had just 27 1,000 yard rushing seasons.

Riggins 4
Portis 4
Davis 3
Morris 3

Are the only ones with 3+ 1,000 yard rushing seasons.

We’ve only had 35 receivers get to 1,000 yards in a season.

McLaurin, Monk, Clark and Sanders have the Lion’s share of those.

Only two players have had 100 reception years for us all time.

Art Monk and Pierre Garçon.

We’ve only had 5 QBs surpass 4,000 yards passing.

Cousins has three of those.

Only 26 Commanders have ever had over 10 sacks in a season.

Mann, Manley, Kerrigan do a lot of the heavy lifting there.

Interceptions we’ve only had three players since 2000 with 5+ picks in a season.

Champ Bailey and DeAngelo Hall and London Fletcher

Only two players in our history have had 150+ combined tackles in a season.

London Fletcher and Bobby Wagner.

I’d say we have a major talent hole across the board.

Yeah and our 1 single All Pro position player in 30 years, Sheriff. Isn't even resigned and he goes off to Jax.

Obviously if this team was ever any good Trent Williams should have had a couple All Pros. If he was drafted by the 49ers he'd probably have 10 of them by now. It's kinda funny how he goes there and is all of a sudden the best tackle in the league in his mid 30s.

The Scherff situation was a really strange one, as he failed to play in more than 14 games for 5 straight seasons, and only played in 8, 11, 13, 11 in the 4 years leading up to the contract expiration (including the franchise tag season). The injury concern was real.



This brings up a point i've battled with internally trying to wrap my head around this. First, regarding Scherff. He hasn't missed a game since going to Jacksonville. How the hell does that happen? Regarding Trent. He's an All Pro player, and didn't win one here. We have had our issues with the ability to get All Pro players, meanwhile we have one and he doesn't get the nod. We have been bad at evaluating talent AND have been bad at developing, and getting the most of, the talent we have had. It's been bad on both fronts around here for so long, that we're all so confused about what truly designs success. I know we lived through Gibbs and that period of utter domination, but it's a different game.

It's really crazy to me that none of the Hogs made that list. How could Grimm and Jacoby not have made it? The Hogs are one of the most famous groups in NFL history. Just goes to show you the anti-DC bias isn't a new thing.

I still think that the Hogs should have been inducted into the HOF as a group.
 
Crazy that Gregggggg Williams never managed one. Those were the last actually decent (not just statistically decent) defenses we fielded.

This is the style of defense I run and have run for about a decade. It’s fantastic.
