The 2026 Free Agency Thread

I don’t have a lot to disagree with there - I just asked where the ‘he’s out of shape and fat’ stuff is coming from? Guys do come back quicker from injuries now - but again the attention is always on the players who struggle not on those whose recoveries go smoothly.

If Peters and Quinn are ‘okay’ with Dyami and Burks as a #2 we are truly clueless.

My main point wasn't whether Brandon was out of shape, agree that's subjective, so if people don't want to buy that its fine.

It's about his knee surgery. So if I read you on this? Your point is you don't buy that the next season these players aren't the same off of reconstruction knee surgery, and Peterson is more the norm than the exception its just that the media harps on the the more rare cases of the players not being the same?

I haven’t said any of that. You changed the topic on me. I’m just saying orthopedic surgery has come a long way and people may bring up AP as some unicorn but he’s really not anymore as you pointed out, every injury is different as is every recovery.

I haven’t dug into the data enough to prove it out, but just going off the narratives, Adrian Peterson is treated like a complete outlier when it comes to bouncing back from an ACL. Not because it’s typical—but because it was so rare. You still hear his name come up across sports whenever someone returns from a knee injury, usually with the caveat: don’t expect Peterson—that was different.

I do remember at the time people wondered if he might reset expectations—that maybe guys wouldn’t need two full years anymore to refind their form. But years later, the dominant takeaway still seems to be that Peterson was the exception, not the rule. Could it be that players come back faster now and we just don’t make a big deal out of it unless it’s extraordinary? Maybe. But my gut says no—it still comes up constantly when evaluating free agents or draft prospects: give the guy a break, he’s only a year removed from knee surgery.

And in Aiyuk’s case, it’s not just an ACL—it’s ACL and MCL.

I remember the same conversation around Bryce Love—viewed as a draft steal, but with real concern because there was more going on than just a standard ACL recovery.

If I’m being optimistic, sure—maybe Aiyuk is the exception. Maybe he bounces back like Peterson. Maybe he picks up the playbook quickly, stays in great shape, misses camp like Terry did but isn’t affected. But that’s a lot of “maybes.” It feels like stacking assumptions and hoping everything breaks right.

My guess is they’re comfortable enough with Dyami or Burks at Z, and view Aiyuk as upside rather than a necessity. And to be fair, this front office isn’t dumb—they see the same risks. It also fits their pattern of not over-prioritizing WR.

But they haven’t earned enough trust from me at that position to just assume they’re right.

I’m not saying it’s a clean evaluation, but the point about ACL surgeries taking time probably isn’t relevant here. Aiyuk had his surgery on November 2024, so it IS coming up on 2 years.

Also, the MCL just isn’t a big deal. LCL or posterolateral corner would be. I did a primary care sports medicine fellowship and worked in an orthopedic office for 7 years doing non surgical orthopedics

I cannot disagree with this more. "Loading up" is not what they did--they reached in the draft and got desperate, hoping Mike Evans lasts one more year. Warren Sharp has hammered the 9ers for their poor drafting over the last several years. Just acquiring wide receivers is not stockpiling talent if they are mediocre first round picks who can't stay healthy (Pearsall), or picking someone 2 full rounds early (Stribling)--isn't that what we criticize Peters and Ben Sinnott for?

Like I said in another post, I would rather have Conerly and Tunsil than Pearsall and Stribling. Plus, there is a lot of hand wringing over McLaurin's health, but not the entier 9ers offensive roster: Kittle, age 33 season, injured last year. McCaffery, 30, has had as many years where he missed 10+ games as healthy ones since 2020. Evans is 33 and injured all last year. Pearsall played in only 9 games.

We will continue to disagree on this, but I am not willing to stockpile talent at one position, while leaving gaping holes elsewhere like the Bears. That's why the Bengals have been awful: Great QB and WRs, hot garbage every where else.

I am not defending the quality of our WR room. I am attacking the idea that we should just throw endless resources at the position, and disregard everything else.

By “load up,” I meant they were not patiently waiting around for Jennings. They signed Mike Evans — which I know, total yawn… who needs that? Some of us (guilty) might’ve actually been okay with that kind of move for Washington. Then they added Stribling and brought in their version of a Dyami-type guy with Kirk.

And yeah, clearly my master plan is to dump every resource into WR and happily roll out a roster that’s a disaster everywhere else. You’ve nailed my position. 😄

Look, Peters has done a good job — no argument there, I just don't think he's gone a great job and I do think that's the underlying rub with some of these discussions .

I didn’t realize wanting a legitimate #2 WR now qualifies as asking for a luxury item and it hinders the construction of a roster. Seems like a pretty normal ask… but what do I know.

OK, fair enough, I am not an expert lol on knee constructions but saw something from one of those social media sports doctors who had concerns about his specific condition, but if you think his health should be 100% fine, I'll ride with it.

OK, cool just to clarify, my macro point on Aiyuk wasn't about him being out of shape -- it was just one on a list. You zeroed in on that and i backed off and said that one is subjective so fair enough on your end.

My concerns about him physically.

A. Knee surgery
B. if he misses camp won't he have the same injury vulnerabilities of others who have done the same like Terry.

It was explained to me not to worry about the knee because its well over a year now. Cool, fair enough. Training camp remains a wildcard. I gather he has no choice but to do the SF camp if they don't release him. But not sure if so they have him go full out.

Just to be clear, I've been good with them signing Aiyuk forever, going way to back to last year. I still am. But considering how its unfolding, its looking like a greater risk compared to other options.

We don't even know they he has the wherewithal to show up to SF camp, and from what I understand if he doesn't they can shelve him for the season without pay.

I can’t believe there’s a Commanders fan breathing that wouldn’t be interested in Diggs after the outcome of his legal matters. I see folks talking about him being selfish, cancerous and killing the vibe. If this ‘brotherhood’ is as strong as they say it is, that really shouldn’t be a problem in the least.

We are sitting on entirely too much cap money for the second consecutive season to not have brought in a proven #2.

I tip my cap for what they’ve done defensively, and they were crafty at RB and adding Chig. But it’s beyond comprehension that the receiver position has been addressed so poorly. Aiyuk hasn’t played football in 2 years and might be mentally ill. He is not a plan, he’s a nice to have and store away when SF inevitably lets him go. If they didn’t love Jennings, that’s fair, but it’s basically Diggs and Deebo now. Give me Diggs.

If it were the beginning of free agency then Diggs would worry me. He's a "speed" receiver and when that goes it can go fast. Where we are though in free agency with most of the candidates go I think he's a good option. The biggest downside with Diggs is his age. At 32, he's a one year rental without much potential to becoming a piece that we want to bring back long term.

I'd bring him in, sign him if I can, and be glad to have a viable receiver defenses need to respect other than Terry. Then, I'd probably think about making him not a true full time starter, but give him a snap count to try to preserve him and also to give the younger receivers a bit of burn so maybe they can prove themselves/grow into the role.

McLaurin will be 31 by the time the season starts. Just saying…

I think I hear ya. I'm fine with a Diggs signing and think he can be a productive one-year signing. I'd be lying though if I said his being a small, speed receiver didn't come with greater risks. Add the age factor to it and it gets riskier. Now, I don't see why he can't be a good one year signing given his production last year, but I think you have to be smart about how you use him if you do bring him in.

Then again, I don't think there is a vet receiver we could bring in at this point where we couldn't come up with a worry or two. My concerns with Diggs aren't that serious because they aren't really based in recent production but in projection and looking at worst case scenarios.

If it makes you feel better in the event they bring Diggs in (I still doubt it although he seems to be interested in us on social media), he’s not really a speed guy. Don’t get me wrong, he’s been a viable deep threat in his career. But not off the back of elite rare speed or anything, he’s been a mid-4.4 guy who can run routes his whole career. Much less a speed guy than Terry anyways, with his 4.3 speed, and only a little older.

Diggs is a route-runner extraordinaire with excellent hands and feel for finding the hole in zone, which most of the league is playing most of the time. I actually think his game could age pretty well overall. Especially another year removed from the ACL, which he came back strong from already last year with 85/1000. He’s at least as good as Terry when both are healthy at this stage, to be honest, and has been a measurably better and more productive (and consistent) player for most of their careers until he tore the ACL. Which he came back strong from. Terry just has the massive TD season in recent memory skewing perception.

They would be a really dangerous duo when healthy despite their ages. No-brainer imo but I guess they’re waiting on Aiyuk.

Heck, I'm not sure it would need to be an either/or siuation with Aiyuk and Diggs. Rotating receivers should keep them fresh and provide a safeguard should one become injured, and when we use a 3 receiver set, there would be three viable options.

That’s not exactly what I’m saying. Some people are never the same after an ACL. I’m just saying, it’s been about 2 years. And the MCL doesn’t change much for me.

IF His health is ever going to be good. It should be good now. No guarantees.

Now about his football conditioning and ability to play after two years away, which as you’ve pointed out, hasn’t worked well for other players,I don’t disagree with you. Not about most things. And especially about our failure to get a WR2.

I've talked about it a lot in different places when he said 2 inside linebackers.

My question is even different than theirs. I don't think that Sonny will play the edge hardly at all because we have way too many edges.

My problem is that we have 4 inside LBs for 2 spots so people are not going to be happy with the playing time. We have Sonny, Chenal, Luvu, and MaGee. Will Sonny be brought a long slowly, maybe not start, not be the green dot, or will we trade a Luvu, etc

I just think that bringing in both Diggs and Aiyuk would really limit opportunities for others, Luke & Lane in particular. We need to give them looks in this new offence with Jayden to properly assess if they can have a viable long term impact here.

The more I think about it, I don't think deep down this debate is truly about people are really happy with what they did at WR-weapons. It's about enjoying the off season and wanting to feel great about Peters and what's going to happen next season. And people giving their concerns, just annoys them and they argue back. It's sort of a mini homerism take. And I recognize it because I used to do it, too.

I want to be giddy about the season and feel like they nailed everything in the off season. I understand that feeling and that vibe. But lol, I am just over that as I've gotten older. And I am not saying the homers are wrong. It's perfectly possible that every break that needs to go right (see 2024) goes right. But for me I hate that concept of relying on breaks and wild card happenstance.

If I go back to the beginning of this off season. There was zero clamoring for the status quo on offense. I don't recall any of it. All they really did basically is dump their most productive Wr and TE for younger replacements. And improved the backup Z. And made the center spot more uncertain.

If I went months ago, this would be the off season.

A. We dump Biadaz. And go in house for his replacement
B. We dump Ertz for Chig
C. We dump deebo for a 3rd round rookie WR

That's really it.

And for backups we dump Chris Moore for Dyami.

I'd hazard a bet, that there would have been months ago, no one saying, that's awesome, I love that or even hey that's plenty good enough. I bet there would be zero sentiment like that. But considering Peters did a nice job on defense aside from CB. Why not celebrate the whole roster? I get the sentiment. But IMO that's what it is emotion. Because from a logic standpoint, I recall the posts on this thread before the off season, and I don't recall anyone embracing this non aggresstive approach on offense.

Do you think that we can have a top 10 offense as we stand right now.

Probably. 100% because I think Jayden at his best is a top 5 QB and assuming he runs plenty. I don't think its a SB offense though. You just need to bracket Terry or if you have a #1 CB, they often can shut him down -- who is going to beat you then?

With this current WR crew, I don't think can afford to keep Jayden in the pocket a lot, IMO he is going to have to run a lot to burn defenses that want to play man against them.

So in short, I think Jayden can overcome his lack of weapons, but it might also endanger his health a bit more.

They also vastly improve the RB group and extend Tunsil but overall I see it the same as you. Their belief is the C position was improved by releasing Biadasz , we will see.

Defensively on paper we should be able to attack the QB which is what they wanted. There is still much skepticism that more is needed in the backfield and it's not too late upgrade

The other big concern is the brand new coordinators, especially on the offense who comes creating his first playbook.
