Oh, Hartman was awful in the preseason. Honestly though, so was Josh Johnson. Based on their play, I was hoping he would cut both and go into the season with JD5 as the starter, Mariotta as the back up, and Luke as the emergency QB (in the Brian Mitchell role.) I didn't think either deserved a roster spot.

Also, to be frank, at that point in the season I didn't care if we won or lost. I wanted us to get as many on-field answers and developmental snaps as possible. So, if we played Hartman and he stunk that was what we needed to see (for future evaluation and for the draft).

Plus, how fun would it have been if Sam freaking Hartman beat the Eagles, dropped their playoff seed, and got them booted from the playoffs, all while we still wound up with Styles. It could have happened.

I don't rule out that Peters has a better sense of what his WR room could do than Jay and others, etc. I get the logic.

But he hasn't exactly proven in his first two seasons that his read specifically on this team's WR room and their potential is hot.

Every time, I've heard Keim said last year in podcasts that they were setback in part because they didn't expect KJ Osborn, Michael Gallup and Chris Moore to all fail -- it makes me cringe. Among other things.
 
It's a shame Deebo can't challenge on the outside some, he'd be perfect.
 
The longer Deebo sits out there on the market the more likely his price ends up in the range AP would be comfortable making an offer to bring him back. The question is whether his specific skill set is a good match for the offense going forward. In his prime I would say it's your job to find a role for Deebo, but at this stage in his career I am not sure you approach it the same way.

No one matters more than Jayden's health, no FA or anyone they drafted
They didn't do enough to support Daniels in the draft
They had a great draft.

The headline of the tweet was misleading.

Though multiple points could be true at the same time, or in ths case three in my book.

A. Protecting your franchise QB is important
B. Improving the defense helps the team including Jayden
C. Having weapons helps a QB greatly especially a young one who is very dependant on precision and timing from his receivers and throws a wicked deep ball but needs dudes who can actually get open deep

Point A and Point B, doesn't negate C. There are teams that address every macro issue versus leaving one to chance.

It's sort of like a debate about diet and exercise improving your health -- but like they are competiting points and mututally exclusive. if you lack one, you celebrate the other and by extension defend the lack of the other. Hey don't give me a hard time, I am eating salads all day long, are you telling me that's irrelevant, why the focus on me not hitting the gym, would you eat differently, just last month i was eating pancakes every morning, now look at me.
 
Would you rather have Sonny Styles and Tunsil or Arvil Reese and Mauigoa? That's what this draft boils down to. Same with Downs and Malachai Lawrence versus Styles and Tunsil.

My theory is that the combo of picks we used to get Tunsil could have been used to get us another first rounder.

Since you can't look ahead to possible injury, looking at it that way

We've already had a proven all pro caliber LT for a year and signed for 3 more. That's an ace in the hole over the others.

Then add in the potential Styles brings, I can't see how we lose this

Regardless of Downs potential, Fields was a reach. I see Dallas as the losers with NY in between.

Styles and Tunsil by a mile. I pasted way before the draft that I think Styles is just a better pro prospect. He has a clearly defined position and is a good box LB, sideline to sideline linebacker, and coverage LB and has elite physical traits in terms of length and athleticism.

Tunsil is a proven all pro caliber LT. not a rookie RT.
 
For the 3rd year in a row we have drafted a WR in the middle rounds. One of those 3 guys needs to develop into a solid starter, or else I think Peters is about as bad at picking WRs as Shanahan was at picking DBs in Denver. Peters has been solid at landing value at CB (Sanristil and Amos), and Crosky-Merritt was a brilliant 7th round pick, but we haven't seen much from Sinnott or the WRs...at least not yet.

I wonder if this is the Patriots influence on Peters. While Adam was there I don't think they ever drafted a WR in the first and most of their receivers were considered Jags to above average. That wasn't the case with the 49ers, Deebo was a second and Aiyuk was a late first rounder, but maybe his truer foundation was more the Pats than the 49ers?

Could be because you're right, they didn't draft any 1st round receivers. Here is their early round receiver history during APs tenure of 2003-08:
2003 - 2nd - WR - Bethel Johnson (oh and 6th round QB Kliff Kingsbury)
2004 - 1st - TE - Ben Johnson
2006 - 2nd - WR - Chad Jackson
2006 - 3rd - TE - David Thomas
2006 - 4th - TE - Garrett Wilson

So not only did they not invest in receivers, their picks were ass other than Ben Watson who was the last pick in the first round. Perhaps he can't scout receivers well
 
I used BGO Oracle (our AI resource) what percentage of WRs are successful at the NFL round by round drafted (I defined 'success' as at least 5 seasons of being a starter). Here's what I got:


1. First Round: Approximately 64% of first-round WRs turned into top-level starters.
2. Second Round: The success rate drops significantly for second-round picks, hovering around 25-30%.
3. Third Round: This trend continues with around 15% of third-round WRs being successful by the provided definition.
4. Fourth-Seventh Rounds: For the remaining rounds, the success rate reduces even further, generally ranging between 5% (Fourth Round) to less than 1% (Seventh Round).

So there is a precipitous drop off after round 1.
 
Some of us have banged the drum for signing FA's to multiyear contracts opposed to so many one year deals. (yes some one year deals serve a purpose)

The below article explains how the team looked to improve the D, getting them younger and faster. One of many key signings was Chaisson. The article hits on he turning down a good 3 year deal to come here for one year. Why not make that a two year deal, match the 3 year or add an optional 2nd year? Seems the guy wanted to be in Washington.

My guess is he wanted the 1 year deal so he could have another productive season a d make $20M+ a year.
