I don’t think Whitt was the biggest problem for us. I think talent and effort may have been.

But with Payne, if he blows up, he’s going to want a big payday. I don’t view him as individually being the difference in winning the Lombardi or not and this is very likely his last season in Washington unless he has a great year and takes less money.

I’d rather get something for him than nothing.

I actually don’t hate Payne. He’s a bit up and down, but he’s been overall solid for us. I just don’t know that he is here beyond this season.
 
I reckon most GMs would be moving Payne on this offseason.
 
One thing to consider about trading Payne for anything less than a 3rd this year is the potential for a 3rd comp pick next year when he walks.

If we can use him to get BTJ (I don’t think that is realistic), pardon my French, fuck the comp pick.

I don't want to lose him for nothing either but I actually do feel like the trenches can play a huge part in winning the title or not. If we will be in the 3-4 though, I would trade him. I also want to see more of Newton which would be the one reason why I would let him go.

However, I feel like the trade market for Payne will be a lot better at the deadline after he's playing well

That's true HigSkin only if we don't spend a lot on FA next year too. :)

The only reason I feel a little "ick" about it is because that was what Spurrier attempted and backfired so spectacularly. At least the players we're talking about here have had a greater degree of NFL success.

50% of our roster is going to turn over again after this season, so is it really realistic that we’re ready to not sign outside FA’s in order to play the comp pick game? I don’t think we’re there yet unless we have a gangbusters 2026 draft and some less-expected 2024/2025 players really break out.

To get a comp pick for Payne, we’ve gotta basically restrain ourselves to only signing other teams’ cuts and late FA stragglers.

I really don’t think we’re there yet, with the amount of 1-year deals we’re still signing and how much roster turnover we’re still due to have. So I wouldn’t plan anything around it.

Plus I’m not sure I believe he’ll end up earning a 3rd round comp pick-eligible sized contract anyways. So even more risk there.

re the Reaves quote, I remember that video where Rivera brought Jeremy into his office and let him know he made the Probowl. It was a really sincere awesome moment so I'm not 100% sure this statement is fair to previous staffs. Still, it's nice to hear.

Its a little weird too considering he's spent 99.9 percent of his career here but yes, it is nice to hear players talk about much they want to be here.

While I agree the problem is it appears that 60% of the players in the NFL are former college teammates of Jayden Daniels.
