The 2026 Free Agency Thread

I’m going to go against the grain here, I think. Hendrickson would be a good get. Pass rush fixes a lot of evils and to afd Hendrickson AND Oweh would make our defense legitimately dangerous.

Also, count me out on Pierce at $31 million. For a guy that’s never caught 50 balls? Those numbers are making me take a good hard look at Carnell Tate in the draft.

Also, my morale needs some signings today

To expand on your thoughts, I dont think we are realistically thinking this year is a superbowl run type year. Another off season for coordinators get their feet wet, better opportunity to evaluate things, another FA period and another draft
. This does not mean another 5 win season is acceptable, we still need to see improvement over last year.
I could see that for sure. We obviously were/are lacking in blue chip players, but we also need to fill so many spots and need to have a competitive season. Part of that is improving competition and depth, while also having room (and a runway) for young guys to make the roster and develop.

Beyond still trying to add higher quality players - Woolen, Okonkwo, a receiver, maybe a backer, etc.), this next part of FA is where Peters has had some success in the past. We probably won’t be thrilled with some of these guys (1 year deals, older guys, lesser talents), but they should be able to raise our floor at least.

As a side note, there are still a lot of interesting safeties available - I think I counted something like 4 in a top 100 FAs list. I know the reporting hasn’t suggested it, but maybe we pivot that way if some targets at other positions fall through?

Didn’t he want to offer Pierce more than what he got from Indy? That’s a big red flag. He also wanted to throw the bank at a Phillips who can’t stay on the field more than 8 games a year. I’m not mad one bit about missing out on those two. I’m moreso just laughing at even when they do try and throw money around , they miss. Very similar to the Capitals right now. We will see how Peters does the rest of the way though. Done clowning on this FO for now.

Seems like damned if he does, damned if he doesn't.

So you don't like the money he's throwing around. Yet hitting him for "missing". At least judging by reports he missed on Linderbaum and Phillips because the price got too high. So if we want to rip him for those the only hit that makes sense to me is there is no price too high for either player -- if you need to pay Linderbaum 30 million, do it. If you need to pay more than 30 million to get Phillips, then do. Either go all in, or don't go at all.

Pierce they were the highest bidder. The Patriots offered Godwin much more money last year than Tampa offered, he decided to stay in Tampa because he loves it there. It happens. That was part of my annoyance about Terry last year, he acted like he'd play in the Canadian league if they offered him the best deal -- to each their own money is money but some players aren't always driven by that alone. There was a zillion narratives leading up to this that Pierce didn't want to leave and is a BFF with Daniel Jones.

I mean our CB group has to be among the cheapest in the league right now given we have two 2nd round contracts starting and little else. There’s plenty of room to add a legitimate outside corner with length if they decide to. They damn well should.

Robertson being signed early doesn’t mean he was some huge priority at the expense of another move, it just means they came to terms with a target quickly who otherwise may have resigned in DET or somewhere else, and pulled the trigger when they were comfortable with it. Obviously he was their top realistic add at slot DB, we’ll see if they were right.

I’m not a fan of the signing from the jump but you seem to have this fixation where you think they’re doing one single task at a time and that time spent on players is a zero-sum game. We have a whole FO staff, that’s not the case. Robertson is probably a Newmark pet project.

Like you kept going on that they focused all their energy on Pierce and didn’t move on to a backup plan. Which is such a weirdly linear way to think given all their secondary and tertiary targets other than Shaheed are still out there. And the longer they’re out there comparing offers, the cheaper they get. The main guys we’ve been connected to (Jennings and Doubs) are still out there. There was no need to immediately sign one when Pierce didn’t work out, but you’re stuck on it.

They can do multiple things at once. Striking out on one high end target doesn’t mean they’re now behind on their targets further down the list. It’s not like the HC search.

And this is all from someone who has been very critical of Peters btw. I just think you’re being unreasonable about the wrong things.
What I am saying is we do in fact have a lot of holes to fill out a competitive 53 man roster for the opener and quality players are expensive. The money spent so far for re-upping Tunsil and signing Oweh were well spent but the team IMO has to gamble a bit at some positions in regards to who we have and what those players can do.

Personally, I think the team has a good amount of confidence that Trey Amos will be a starter for us and a good one. In that regard, perhaps the fact we have a black hole at safety, TE, WR2, LG and other spots may lead me in that case to look for a value veteran to provide the depth we are talking about.

I wouldn't necessarily look for a big signing at CB.

Hendrickson would definitely move the needle for our defensive front for sure, I just have a nagging feeling he might end up in Dallas

Keim also said that Mikey and Robertson are interchangeable but expects Robertson to be more inside with Mikey outside but feels like they will also add a bigger corner at some point.

Expects them to add another edge but may be later in the draft because the position is pretty deep with guys who you may can build into something.

Expects them to add some receivers today.

Wouldn't be shocked if they don't really do anything at RB considering the pool is pretty empty now. Thinks maybe they see about Love.

From talking to the team, he doesn't get the sense that Settle is looked at as the main starter but more so a rotational piece instead
I'm worried that they have a hard ceiling on what they would offer to Okonkwo and he signs elsewhere. It worked for Oweh but hopefully they won't end up being bridesmaids on everyone else.

Hendrickson is coming off an injury plagued season at age 31 in Cincinnati.

I don't want to pay him for the 17.5 sacks he got with the Bengals in 2024 and 2023 as he might not be that player on a new contract going into future years.

I see him as a declining asset and he's not going to sign a shorter term deal that would protect this team in any regard.

I think my issue isn’t so much stuff like missing on Pierce and Shaheed, who stayed with their own teams. But, we couldn’t muster a late round pick swap for 28 year old Michael Pittman?

I’m ready to trade for the Bears’ GM, I think.

I'd be game if we could structure the contract with a viable out after 2 years.... make it look like its for 3-4... I'm OK with a decent salary as long as we aren't stuck for long term.

I understand our age aversion, but these would be his 31 and 32 seasons, that's older.... but not OLD

You are quite the kool aid drinker amigo. And always seem to clash with my takes, but it’s whatever though. At the end of the day, Peters hasn’t exactly inspired confidence and belief in his time here to warrant any type of good faith. We seemingly have just as many holes on this roster as we did since he arrived. Is that not alarming to you?

Going from 12-5 to 5-12 and seeing both coordinators being dismissed from the team is legitimate to have questions about the direction of the team going forward.

We need to see how things shake out and it may be OK like it was for the Eagles doing the same thing in 2024.

But unlike Roseman we don't have a lot of history here with Peters to say like some of us that can remember the faith that we had in Beathard to find the players we needed to be a contender.

Peters was PART of successful front offices in the past in SF, DEN and NE. But this is his first job as the man in charge. Now he's in a more political role, dealing directly with owner on a lot of things as well as managing the relationships of the HC and the coordinators and other assistants, etc.

He isn't just reviewing scouting reports and helping to assemble the draft board and free agent lists. He's pulling the trigger.

If we are relying on Settle to be a full time starter…nightmare fuel. Our front 7 has been AWFUL for as long as I can remember outside of that aberration of the Covid 2020 season.
You should probably watch some tape on Settle over the past couple of seasons. He has been really really good. Elite? No. But they didnt pay him anywhere close to elite money either.

I think he is. He flashed quite a bit last season. And at some point you have to elevate the guys you develop. Not so say we dont need another MLB. Because we do if they are going to be playing a lot of 3-4.
Yea, I have penciled in Magee since early last season. He deserves his shot and we need his speed. He will want to prove himself

Agreed whole heartedly. This is a make or break offseason for Peters imo. We finally have a franchise QB and seem to be stuck in neutral.

Oh the classic watch more film take 😂 do you have a film room in your basement watching Texans game film every Monday? Get over yourself. This team has ZERO elite talent on defense as it stands right now. I’m tired of stop gap solutions on defense. Settle isn’t the long term answer and neither are Payne and Kinlaw. We had one of the worst defenses in the league last year. Armstrong injury or not. I think Amos can certainly be elite and a true number 1 and I’m excited to see what Oweh can do, but outside of that it’s a whole lot of meh on our defense and has been for quite some time.
