Daronte Jones and the Defensive Staffing Thread

I'm gonna need you to go spend some time and think about what you've done

My biggest hope is that we stop hearing the excuse that the players are confused so we need to simplify the scheme. he players are professionals. They should be able to communicate and know their assignments. The coaches are professionals. They should be able to teach the plays and drill responsibilities into the players' heads.

I hope we are going to see an offseason where 80% of our draft and free agency capital is spent on upgrading the defensive roster. If we don’t upgrade this roster significantly it doesn’t matter who the DC and other coaches are…

Washington hasn’t had safeties that could tackle in the open field for quite some time.

We need to get this position buttoned down.

I hope Jones brings in a new defensive staff as developers.

Kevin Sheehan had Paul Charchian (Vikings Reporter) who dropped an interesting tidbit from a coach who left (forget his name) that basically said no comment when asked about Flores. Charchian said he has some relationship rebuilding to do and only signed a 1 year deal to come back. Obviously, Flores is not for everyone like players and coaches but some food for thought.

That's Pettine. It was a hot topic on X days back.

Totally totally agree 100%…. I’m not upset that Whitt was let go but to be honest unless we get the horses this defense can’t be taken serious in any race. Way to old and players who just aren’t/weren’t good

I think Brian Flores is like a lot of things, you either like him or you generally can’t stand the guy. No in betweens…. And to be honest there’s definitely something there for him to not get a HC gig once again … and goes far beyond the lawsuit imho

I've mentioned, I follow the S. Florida reporters closely for work reasons among other things. Flores is known for being a big time A-hole to lots of people.

I swear to God this has been going on since at least when Haslett was here. It was definitely true under Barry and Manusky. Manusky was odd, because he basically said he wanted his defense to be simple so people could (insert some macho talk here) play hard and hit hard or some nonesense like that.

Jack's defenses had communication problems, as did Whitt's.

I don't remember really hearing that complaint with Blache's defenses, they were also just so incredibly read and react that there might not have been a need for communication.

Gregg William's defenses were absolutely not guilty of this. I think Gregg would have dropped an elbow on a player if they weren't in the right place at the right time. Hell, he benched Lavar because dumb dumb couldn't figure out how to play in a scheme.

You're right. We need to never hear about this again.

I mean, also he's suing the league which probably doesn't help in the job interview process... Given he's interviewing with an owner, and by extension, is suing that same owner.

The way people are talking about Flores' personality sounds a bit like Eric Beienneiinemeamieney, except Brian has all the accomplishments Eric wished he could get.

And EB is back probably exactly where he should be. Working for Reid as OC. Reid runs that program, but EB probably is a good designer of plays. But not necessary a great play caller. Maybe he will be one day, but he hasn't been.

Reid also knows how to handle assistant coaches, clearly so much better than Ron did. If EB gets out of line, Reid will waddle over to him and mutter something to him and you'll never hear anything from EB again.

Oh yeah, after his stint in Miami with Flores, Ryan Fitzpatrick had a lot to say publicly about his feelings on Flores. Basically saying he doubts he left that job with many friends from his staff, he ruined a lot of his relationships even among his own assistants.

Known asshole, as good as he seems to be. For all we know half his struggles getting another shot as a HC are because he can’t put a good staff together.

Well all of this stuff about Flores being a jerk should at least make it easier for Jones to supplement the defensive staff here. Hopefully Jones didn't pick up the personality habits from Flores

Also also wik...

Hopefully Jones and poach assistants that are tired for Flores shit.

Maybe, it can be tough to steal assistants because unless they’re becoming coordinators, NFL rules don’t consider it a promotion, so they can be blocked. Like we blocked Assistant QB coach Blough from interviewing to become a full QB coach last year. Now, a lot of teams will allow them to leave for an opportunity anyways, it’s a good look to do so, but not all. Especially if they’re considered to have a future promotion on the horizon with their current team.
