David Blough and the Offensive Staffing Thread

I was probably leaning towards McDaniel, too, but if we take a step back McDaniel's offenses haven't been that great over the past few years. Basically it was all speed and flash, but little substance.

Tua's struggles didn't help either but I have to agree. David obviously knows JD better than most and it's reasonable to expect he should have a major voice in how they proceed draft and FA wise so that aspect leaves me feeling optimistic. We'll see.

Yeah they can. Drew and Tee are basically free to leave given their bosses were fired. Doubt the GMs are blocking them for leaving for new opps.

With Wells, there is some chance. OL coach would be a promotion for him and DQ and Schotty likely have a good relationship.
 
Blough was a backup to Matt Stafford under Darrell Bevell, also with Chase Daniel and Jeff Driskell. Then with Goff under Anthony Lynn. He has a strong knowledge of both Holmgren/Reid tree and Shanny too. I would think that time is at least some equivalence to QB coach experience, probably superior to TE coaching experience.

Blough's only coaching experience AT ANY LEVEL is less than 2 years - his coaching career started in February of 2024 and his biggest responsibility to date was as an Assistant QBs coach.

Sean McVay had 6 years of coaching experience prior to getting his first chance as Offensive Coordinator including 3 seasons as Washington's Tight Ends coach. Tavita Pritchard, who Blough replaced in early December, has in contrast been coaching since 2010.

I don't think the comparisons stand up to scrutiny. Doesn't mean he can't be successful. But it's nothing like the McVay promotion. And I do think elevating an assistant coach with less than 2 years coaching experience - EVER - is pretty unprecedented.

Only counter I can think of to this to play devil’s advocate is QB3/QB4 is a bit of a pseudo coach role

Boy was he nervous and careful in that interview, it was only at the end that a little personality showed.

To add here, Drew could be a recommendation from Tavita from their Stanford days when Tavita was a coach. My guess is Tavita will want to see Blough do well

This could be a crazy bellyflop. It could be inspired genius. It likely won't be somewhere in that blah zone like giving Scott Turner his first turn at the wheel after decades of being a position coach or Joe Whitt for that matter. Besides, I'm Burgold. I start with hope.

tbf, Scott Turner went to my middle school and he was a known idiot. so his mediocreness was not a surprise. I can't say I went to the same middle school as David Blough though. he's got that going for him.
 
The bottomline for me is that DQ clearly wanted this specific move. He and the organization blocked any interest in Blough last year from multiple teams and this year when there was an issue with Kliff they pulled the trigger. It's definitely bold and risky but kind of exciting. I'm sure Jayden was consulted and will have huge input in putting the offense together. I'd imagine the offense will be some amalgamation of the Ben Johnson/O'connell/Mcvay/Shanny offenses.... Run First and everything else goes from there. Hope he kicks ass.
 
Here comes the commissioned fluff to make us feel better.

Blough might be great. This isn’t really anything against Blough. But it’s underwhelming given the entire circumstance of this whole thing.
