I am a big believer in San Marzano tomatoes - it does make a difference along with fresh ingredients. Making great pizza dough is an art. Anyone can make an edible version just by following basic recipes online, but I finally decided that since the dough is one of the most important aspects of a pizza, and that I would never be the Michaelangelo of pizza dough, that I would just order frozen dough from New York pizzerias and use it when needed. That has worked out amazingly well for me.

I sometimes will add a little water to the thawed dough and work some extra yeast into the dough and let it rise before I roll it out.

Homemade pizza is a lot of fun and making a great one is very satisfying. I like to bake mine on my pellet grill at high heat (450 or so).

When you ordered the frozen dough it came in a ball that needed to be stretched out right? That how I did it the first 2 times. Today I try the pre-made version which I know can't be as good. I so wanted to throw it in the air like they do in the pizza places in the old movies but the wife figured (rightfully) that it would end up on the floor.

Yeah, it comes in a frozen ball that you thaw, cover, and let rise like regular dough.

That's how I tried it the first 2 times. Wife stretched out the dough, said it took 20 minutes. She takes 20 minutes to dress a baked potato and put on salad dressing so I shrugged and said "step aside' for the 2nd attempt. Well I failed miserably even with a rolling pin which I used for the first time in my life.

Making pizza dough is an art and a skill. The 'stretching out' of it, what's funny about that is that the better the dough, the more it wants to spring back and is difficult to form into a pizza shape. Maybe before I die I'll master it.

Been there, done that, never got the t-shirt. I ultimately surrendered.

Not a fan of Domaino's or all the other chains. Theres was a Pizza Hut right up the road and we went 2-3 times in 20 years before they went out of business.

One day, not knowing the number, I looked it up and found a coupon for unlimited topping for $14 or whatever. So I went to town. Olives? Sure. Pineapple and ham? Why not, it's free. When I went to pick it up I got a disgusted look from the worker. Apparently a pizza will not cook through with more than 4-5 toppings. I had 13. I took it home and despite cooking it some more it never got past the consistancy of a wet sock. You know you screwed up when a 40 year old who works at Pizza Hut thinks you are a fuck up.

Everything has it's place. Nothing like making something from scratch. On the other hand, even pizza from a chain, while not the same can still be pretty good. I've eaten Pizza Hut's 'tavern style' pizza a few times of late. It's edible :)

Agree it's edible. But every town has a local place and they are always better. There was a Papa Johns here in our small town, it was 20 years before I even knew it was there.

I've been unlucky I guess. The local places I've tried have been bad. And on topic, it's usually the crust that has been the biggest issue. I live in a rural area - but there is one place that opened a couple of years ago, 'Bills Pizza Pub' that serves square pizza with all of the toppings diced up. It sounds unappetizing and it's not the most visually appealing thing but it's actually quite good.

I was discussing this with friends and apparently you can grow San Marzano tomatoes so I'll have to check that out next spring.

People in Maryland are familiar with Ledo's, which was the best pizza and was located near College Park where the Univerisity is. They now have franchises throughout the area including our small town and though not as good as the original it's still solid. And they make rectangular pizzas so I'm used to that.

The best pizza I have ever had was from a guy in rural Illinois that put an oven in the back of a strip mall liquor store. I used to have some half-baked and frozen shipped to Florida. He has since upgraded and opened a small dine-in restaurant next door.

Mine would be the original Grotto's Pizza near the boardwalk in Rehobeth Beach, Delaware. Man, the crust would bubble up with all of these air pockets. Nothing fancy, just pizza. I'm not even sure it had any toppings but it was very good.

Sorry, I phrased that wrong...not enough coffee yet...
I meant it as "first unread post".
