Random Commanders Thoughts

So if those guys are here, y'all know Rivera's still here and Jayden Daniels is not, right?

No, Olave and Gonzalez or other still don't add up to a franchise starting quarterback and new front office moving unproductive players out.

Rivera had the chance to draft quarterbacks over 4 years but admitted towards the end that he underrated the value of the quarterback in today's game.

With those other players added, this club might not be in position to draft #5.

but it would have in any event precipitated the fall of Rivera and the advent of Peters.

While we don't know what Peters would have done at #5 or #6 there is little chance we would have gone into the opener with a 40 year old quarterback like Ryan Fitzpatrick.

The good ones seem to come away with the players they need.

They move up, they move down, they stand pat and make the right pick - all things Ron didn't do well

How do you figure that? I don't think any of the alternative guys in 2022 and 2023 change our prospects at all. But they were clear conventional wisdom choices and in both instances our 'braintrust' decide to forego conventional wisdom and go with players few analysts had as worthy of those picks. 2 straight drafts of Redskins fans yelling 'who?' in the first round.

I will never forget the Washington PR dept clip of Ron Rivera talking pre-draft about 'getting his guy' Emmanuel Forbes in Round #1 - as if all the other NFL GMs were idiots and only Ron saw his true talent. Unforgiveable.

My guess is Rivera was 'trying' for two years here and simply sat back the last two years and rode out the ride until his then inevitable departure.

Good pic for the rotating banner.

So improved personnel, just enough to knock the Skins out of drafting # 2, is out of the realm of possibility for you guys?

I think it's unprovable. The point is - we passed on guys who were bonafide 1st round talent for backups and guys who may not ever be NFL contributors. Maybe you're right and those picks would've submarined our QB search. Possible. But it's still one hell of an indictment against a *supposed* respectable coach in Ron Rivera.

I don't ever want to hear Jim Zorn snark, because he was every bit as good a HC as Ron Rivera was in DC.

For the second time this year, we do what good teams do. We took it to a bad team and crushed them. We gave them no hope. Love that we scored to end the half and then added another score on the first drive of the half. After that, the Panthers packed it in.

I've got my fingers crossed that Daniels is okay. I'm going to the game next week (first since the pandemic) and while I will scream my lungs out for Washington, I would love to see what I hope is the beginning of an NFC rivalry.

I don’t want to derail other threads. I’m sure plenty disagree.

If I’m Dan Quin I walk around all week with a pool noodle. Whenever I find myself within pool noodle distance of Kingsbury, I smack him in the head.

If it’s the playoffs, or the Super Bowl, and you need Daniels to run to win the game - I get it.

But you had all week to script your first 10 plays, your opening drive sequence. And you picked a design qb run as play #1 to play the 1-5 panthers. And now he’s hurt.

Need a better understanding of risk vs reward. We got a guy that can pick defenses apart. There was no reason to call designed QB runs against what is one of, if not the, worst teams in the league. Our backup was able to destroy them. Just totally unnecessary.

Bruised ribs was my guess based on the fact the team allowed him to come out and watch the second half of the game and he didn't go to the hospital right away for more tests.

The issue for next week is whether Jayden will have the flexibility and motion to raise his arm over his shoulder and throw the ball with authority.

If we are looking at a 17 game season, I am more likely sit him in one game and have him come back the following week.

But he's 24 and young and may recover more quickly than several veterans I have seen with bruised ribs that missed 1-2 games.

Brett Favre started a playoff game and won it while playing with cracked ribs, so a quarterback can play depending upon his pain threshold level.

But again the Bears game is not a playoff game and while it would have been nice to see him out there against Caleb Williams it's not the end of the world if he misses the game.

I agree with most of this, but I think they need to reinforce the idea with Daniels that when he plays run option that he should be the last option. I think Daniels sometimes lets his competiveness win out and he chooses to run the ball more than he needs to. Nothing wrong with giving the ball to BRob, Eckler, or McNichols. Interestingly, I thought Marriota ran the ball too much, too. So, maybe it is an evil of the run/option scheme itself.

A three yarder from BRob is sometimes better for the team than an eight yard from Daniels.

I certainly get what you are saying tshile. But I lean towards the other end of the argument. First of all, it's easy to say AFTER Mariota plays really well and we lay 40 on the Panthers that JD didn't need to run the ball. Every game is important in a 17 game season and on any given Sunday... Yes - Daniels is a gifted passer. But his ability as a runner is part of the package and it's going to be a big part of his NFL career. I think the idea that they should or will shy away from employing that talent - well, it's not going to happen.

It's also easy to say 'use that talent but carefully'. How do you do that? Part of the equation is him being smart. He has been at times. But that was one where he got caught from behind. Short of maybe better blocking not sure how you avoid those kinds of plays unless you don't have him run at all, and that's not going to happen. I'm not sure what difference it makes whether a run is 'designed' or not. If he's running it will always be a risk. And btw, every drop back is also a risk.

There's a reason why almost every year, almost every QB in the NFL gets dinged or flat out hurt. It's dangerous playing QB. It's dangerous if you're big. It's dangerous if you're skinny. It's dangerous if you're fast or if you're slow. It's dangerous if you are a pocket passer or a dual threat QB.

Jayden is a gifted dual threat QB. They will use every talent he has and while there may be some things they can do to try and mitigate the risk, there is no way to eliminate it.
