I can see them wanting to keep him because with the Mathis injury and them getting rid of all their DT depth in the offseason they'd be truly screwed on the D line this offseason. On the other hand, I'd guess we have about a 10% chance of keeping him past this season and since the best hope of this season is a wild card and quick playoff exit I might take the trade if it's not a low ball offer.

the sad thing is I think we're in a lose lose situation.

If we sign him, we'll have 2 of our highest paid players on the D-line and that doesn't include Sweat (who's final season under contract is 2023) or Young (who we're likely about to pick up his 5th year option). I guess you just have to hope the cap explodes and you can draft a long term QB on a rookie deal and put it together before you have to pay him the big bucks.

I think the bigger factor is whether Payne wants to stay in DC. It may not be all about the money and if they can afford to sign him. He may just want out and go somewhere he thinks he can win. Maybe they have a sense he wants to stay, or maybe the offers they are getting aren’t much.
 
He may want to stay. He may want to leave. Neither matters if they are intent on keeping him. Intelligent/creative cap management will allow them to do so without tagging. Tagging him will still result in a motivated player in the event that they do.

Eagles and Ravens seem to be the teams really lasered into what they need and how they can help boost their teams chances.

While a #4 pick for Robert Quinn might seem a bit high for a half-season rental, he did have 18 sacks during the regular season in 2020.

Meanwhile, the Ravens really didn't give up too much for a 26 year old player in Smith that is among the best inside linebackers in the NFL and is just entering his prime.

Washington used to be that team, shocking the NFL with moves like the Wilber Marshall deal and stealing Jim Lachey from the Raiders for Jay Schroeder.

Unfortunately, we don't seem to have any bright bulbs on the porch these days. It's more of the slow, plodding, uncreative voices we have had here for a number of years.
 
I want to get back to the days where we can say, "I know you got that Earnest Byner bum. What if we give you this shiny new Oliphant for him?" or "Laverneous Coles just caught a 100 balls, but he's unhappy. I know we're settling, but what say we swap. I know we'll be laughed at, but we'll take that chronic underperformer Santana Moss off your hands."
 
I'll admit I had a short envy attack with the Smith news. The Ravens (and Eagles for that matter) are teams with legit Super Bowl aspirations and logical shoppers for extra ammunition down the stretch this season. Smith is basically a half-season rental. He's playing out his fifth-year option, so no matter what happens the Ravens are going to have to either pony up for a mega-contract for him next offseason or let him walk.

Someday maybe Washington will be a player in that kind of high stakes game again.

I think the Roquan Smith news hits because we've all known that linebacker is an area of weakness that we failed to address. In fact, we failed to address it to such a degree that we are playing small ball. Mostly we are playing a 4-2 defense. When Holcolmb went down we shifted to a 5 d linemen and one linebacker. We don't have starters and we don't have depth at linebacker.
 
Yup. I finally stopped beating the LB drum ... after two years of watching our ex-LB head coach and DC treat the position like an afterthought, it's clear to me that, for whatever unfathomable reason, they don't think it's worth investing in.

To me the Jamin Davis draft was the exception that proved the rule. And even he was clearly not ready to contribute as a rookie.

Just another wtf situation in Washington.

No. The Vikings got the 2023 fourth rounder and a conditional 2024 fourth rounder in addition to Hockenson

Wow, this is so true. Yes, those are the visionary moves you need. Not getting rid of William Jackson, eating salary, and trading a 7th rounder for 6th rounder? Then meanwhile, "I hope Payne stays" is not a strategy. As SilentThreat pointed out, this is a lose-lose. What they needed to do was have vision. Plan ahead. It's not that hard. Trade while the player has that extra value. They keep these guys when the writing is on the wall on how expensive they will be at the end, and then it's like the team has to continually go through some kind of rinse/repeat cycle trying to put the pieces together again.

We shall see, but I would say that the recent moves just seem like they aren't planning properly, and there are too many teams out there (including IN this division) who do exactly that.
