Official Game Thread - Commanders @ Lions

They've got a G who is doubtful and a CB with a hamstring problem.

Washington Inactives:
No. 14 QB Sam Howell
No. 31 S Kam Curl
No. 40 CB Tariq Castro-Fields
No. 71 G Wes Schweitzer
No. 75 G Chris Paul
No. 79 DT Benning Potoa’e
No. 85 TE Cole Turner

Man - the guy I thought might not be available (Allen) plays but Curl, Schweitzer, and Turner out. That's not what I expected at all.

Something to watch... hopefully not have to see a resolution

And just like that, OLine has gone from strength to weakness. Ugh.

Same old, same old. Been on a loop for 30 years with no end in sight whatsoever.

You nailed that one. Making a rookie look like a hall of famer in back to back weeks.

I said quite a few times. That 2pt try and everything afterwards was hellvua suspect....

The two point convert decision doesn't make sense. At the end of the day, it had no bearing on the final outcome.

The much bigger issue is this coaching staff's inability to have their players ready at the opening whistle. Going down 22 points, playing catch up the rest of the day, and not waking up until the 3rd quarter is inexcusable.

This has been a recurring theme for three years now.

I am hot today...like mad hot.

The talent is clearly better on offense, almost dare I say it - dangerous?

That all said, there might be nothing to show for it because we sleepwalk constantly to start games.

If that isn't a coaching fault, I don't know what is.

I think the 2pt would start murmurs amongst the players. Never in my life would I EVER have expected to have an NFL head coach with the chance to get within 7 go for two and wind up trailing by 8. The move is so irrational, I'm getting thoughts it might have been intentional.

Then the drive where Roullier got injured was totally frivolous and a waste of timeouts...and wear and tear to a player.

Actually, that two point conversion attempt did affect the rest of the game. When Slye missed that extra point late in the 4th quarter, that meant Washington was down 9 points (36 - 27) and it was a two score game at that point. That totally eliminated any hope for Washington. Washington still had 3 timeouts and they would have had at least a chance if they were only down 8 points.

Really, really stupid decision by Rivera to go for two earlier in the 4th quarter. I wonder what bullshit he came up with in his press conference afterwards.

Going for 2 in that situation gives you a better statistical chance to win. It's a fairly new phenomenon by coaches with the introduction of analytics. Here is an article from a few years ago explaining it. But basically it breaks down to this:

  • If the team converts on the first 2-point try, it knows it only needs a PAT on the second touchdown to win.
  • If it fails, the team knows that it has to go for 2 again the second time to have a chance to tie.

The "what ifs" really don't matter when you can't get a stop defensively with the score at 29-21.

The only logical explanation I can come up with for why he would go for 2 down 29-21 is that if you get within 6 and maybe luck into one stop defensively, you can potentially take the lead with another drive and avoid a possible overtime. That defense was doing nothing to inspire people with confidence, so Rivera very likely could have been thinking that their performance would have been to our detriment in a possible overtime period.

Coaching ineptitude aside,I think it's long overdue to accept the fact that the talent on the defensive side of the ball is largely over hyped and overrated.
Chase Young coming back fixes nothing.
You have two former linebackers making decisions and calling plays and neither have shown any inclination to fix the linebacker spot or it seems to even develop their high draft choice from last year.

Coaches change, players change. But the on field product never changes.

Or it could be what I have been saying all year, and was more evident on the next PAT attempt - that Rivera is realizing Slye is not reliable.
Two words. Words I have been saying all year.
Brian. Johnson.
It's what we need

Slye was 12 of 12 for us last year on Field Goal attempts and 9 of 10 on Extra Point attempts. Beyond the miss today on an extra point, I am not too sure what substantial evidence there is suggesting that he is unreliable in the time he has spent in DC...
