You can’t keep a guy just for sentimental reasons. As fans, sure we want that. But as the GM, coach, or anyone in the personnel department, you can’t do that. You are paid to make those tough decisions. You can’t hold on to sentimentality. That’s not your job. Besides, does anyone actually care that Bruce Smith broke the sack record as a Redskin? I’d rather forget about that part of our teams history.
As for Kerrigan, I agree that you only trade him for the right offer. He is still a valuable piece for this team and if you think you can get good production from him, you keep him. I believe that’s where they are right now. But that’s the only reason you don’t trade him. Also, you would be foolish not to listen to offers in case a team gets desperate and offers more than they should. If they do, I think you have to trade him. Otherwise, you don’t because he can still contribute to this team.
I don't agree that keeping AP would have been simply out of sentiment. He's still very effective. Bruce Smith made more in 2002 than AP made his whole time here. AP rushed for 1940 yards over the last 2 seasons with an average salary of next to nothing.
I can understand the thought behind it, god knows Rivera knows a hell of more about football than I do... but I still struggle with the move overall. Barber is not (at least to my knowledge) known for his pass catching abilities the same way the other backs may be. To keep Barber over AP confuses me. The one thing I keep telling myself is that MAYBE Rivera knew AP would be buried in the depth chart and he didn't want to hold him back. Speakin from a football standpoint, it's not really about 'sentiment.' He's not a legacy player, when his bust goes up in Canton, his time here will be an afterthought. If Rivera wanted to 'do the right thing' and not hold him back from getting a record... so be it. He's still the best RB we had on our roster, and I think he's got at least 2 - 3 more years if handled correctly... I guess the problem is that I worry handling him correctly would prevent him from getting the record....
