Random Commanders Thoughts

You can’t keep a guy just for sentimental reasons. As fans, sure we want that. But as the GM, coach, or anyone in the personnel department, you can’t do that. You are paid to make those tough decisions. You can’t hold on to sentimentality. That’s not your job. Besides, does anyone actually care that Bruce Smith broke the sack record as a Redskin? I’d rather forget about that part of our teams history.

As for Kerrigan, I agree that you only trade him for the right offer. He is still a valuable piece for this team and if you think you can get good production from him, you keep him. I believe that’s where they are right now. But that’s the only reason you don’t trade him. Also, you would be foolish not to listen to offers in case a team gets desperate and offers more than they should. If they do, I think you have to trade him. Otherwise, you don’t because he can still contribute to this team.

I don't agree that keeping AP would have been simply out of sentiment. He's still very effective. Bruce Smith made more in 2002 than AP made his whole time here. AP rushed for 1940 yards over the last 2 seasons with an average salary of next to nothing.

I can understand the thought behind it, god knows Rivera knows a hell of more about football than I do... but I still struggle with the move overall. Barber is not (at least to my knowledge) known for his pass catching abilities the same way the other backs may be. To keep Barber over AP confuses me. The one thing I keep telling myself is that MAYBE Rivera knew AP would be buried in the depth chart and he didn't want to hold him back. Speakin from a football standpoint, it's not really about 'sentiment.' He's not a legacy player, when his bust goes up in Canton, his time here will be an afterthought. If Rivera wanted to 'do the right thing' and not hold him back from getting a record... so be it. He's still the best RB we had on our roster, and I think he's got at least 2 - 3 more years if handled correctly... I guess the problem is that I worry handling him correctly would prevent him from getting the record....

I hear all that. But ‘another 2-3 years’ out of AP is just a total guess. I know the guy is the closest thing to Superman in the NFL but there will come a moment when the decline is obvious. For all we know it will be this year. It could come at any time. Barber isn’t AP but he’s 26 years old. I think they made the calculation that AP doesn’t have much left and it’s better to go young and maximize the reps for the younger players.

thats fair, i've never argued that the plan was to get younger.... the notion that AP was a sentimental keep is just not one I can agree with. I don't think any of the people who have argued to keep him, did it based on his status as a fan favorite. I know I've made the argument, as well as Mike, that the guy still has it... and cutting talent on a team desperate for talent is a bit of a frustrating activity. AP might not have it anymore... but we've seen more out of him over the last 2 years than we have Barber.

An old saying regarding tournament fishing is 'Don't leave fish, to find fish.' Don't get rid of an effective player, in order to find another effective player. Even if you wanted to keep Barber, we could have easily carried 5 RBs this year, at least the first handful of weeks.

I'm not up in arms and angry that we didnt keep him... but i still don't like letting 1k walk out the door either.

If we were fishing for a day I’d agree :) But we have a long road to travel and we need young guns to get us there. Anyway - it’s done so the argument is academic. I have no doubt if he gets significant carries in Detroit he’ll do well. It’s about the next 3-5 years though so I understand why they made what aim sure was a tough call.

Are any of these young backs proven? Or proven so well they can beat a running back who is almost guaranteed to get 1000 yards for the deal he was under?

AP would have given us the best chance to come out hot, get the team some confidence and leadership on the field, and possibly win games/give the defense a rest.

Now we're depending on McKissic. I've never seen so many unproven backs on one team at one time in my life. Nobody is proven here or has the experience that AP did/does.

I don’t doubt that. But it’s not just about this season or even the next couple. We’re full on rebuilding Mike. You say ‘unproven’ but that could also be characterized as ‘young and full of potential’. I don’t agree with you that one action is right and the other clearly stupid. I could have seen them going either way and there is good rationale for both choices.

Rebuilding what?

Our line is young and 2 of the 5 are on first contracts
Our receivers are young and all are on first contracts
Our QB is young and on first contract
Our running backs are young and are all on first contracts

Our defense is young and prime.

What exactly do we need to rebuild? And, even if we are rebuilding, why wouldn't you want someone there who can help win and teach what a winning attitude is? We have one proven weapon on offense... McLaurin. We had two. You're telling me that it's bad to have a vet within all those young players?

If they're so good and such a fit, they could beat him out on the field. Yet, he had all the first team carries.

The hate for Dwayne is still strong

haha wow...

over Fitzpatrick...
or Trubisky....

I GUESS the thought process is that Allen (Rivera guy) is there so he could be quick to pull him but I dont know... thats tough.

I thought you were sick of talking about this? ;)

this is something that didnt sit with me well... he was by and large the no. 1 guy from the jump. Why wasn't Gibson the guy in camp? I know the ability to truly evaluate was limited, but if the door was open (which clearly it was) for AP to be deemed obsolete, I wish the younger guys would have commanded first team reps during camp to prove that.

No politics guys.

Yeah! We keep to bitching at each other over old players and shitty coaches!!

Boone hates old people!!
