On Taking a Stand and Redskins Fandom

Done. As I said before, I've been barely hanging on the past few years because of all the kneeling and crap, and now the team I've loved for 46 years will be gone after today. dan snyder is a miserable little son of a bitch who has done nothing but run this once proud franchise into the ground. Caving to the WOKE bitches is the LAST straw for me.

I just don't know how I'm going to deal with a name change. As Boone says, it's the same team, but it isn't the players that make me a fan, as many others, it's the image and what it stood for to the fans for decades. I really have to wonder how it's all going to work. No matter what the name may become, when the first home touchdown is scored, I completely expect the stadium to erupt with Hail To The Redskins. They league might even get the band to stop playing the fight song... highly likely, but I expect the fans to sing as they always have. What happens then ? As of this moment, the name is gone....

The state of the team is a mess. Not only is there the name change issue on top of the bad taste of the Allen years but now you have a rift in the ownership group.

In the end I think the only person Dan Snyder gets along with and doesn’t alienate is Joe Gibbs.

This guy is an absolute lightning rod for ill fortune with misstep after misstep.

I had no idea his ownership stake was only 60% in the team.

His departure would heal a lot of wounds.

About 19 years too late. He never had the money to buy the team outright, but he's always been the majority owner. And by far the worst owner in any sport. With him, it's been 21 years of dysfunction and outright suck, coupled with the alienation of most of the fan base, and nothing ever changed with him. And now, the coupe de grace, the name change the little sum bitch said would never come. Karma for being the little asshole he's been has shown up and is driving the last nail in the coffin before it's lowered into the ground and everyone leaves. There's no more damage left to inflict, so what difference does it make if he stays or goes?

Tagging on to something Hog Fever said above...

I accept that the name change is coming. I've come to peace with it and I'll still support the franchise going forwards. The timing of this over the past few weeks has coincided with my Dad being diagnosed with terminal prostate, bone and lung cancer, so in all honesty I've had more on my mind. For me, this whole thing has been kind of trivialised due to my current circumstances. Maybe that's why I don't feel as broken up about the name change as some other fans... it feels like I'm about to go through a much bigger change in my life.

This is not me trivialising any of your reactions and feelings, this is simply about me and how I feel.

Still, even though I'm okay with it, I still don't like it. And honestly, I've been ebaying a storm this week buying Redskins merch before it starts disappearing! I even snagged a copy of the poster I had on my wall as a kid, which I'm going to get framed and hung!

My dad, for his sins, is a Tampa Bay Buccs fan. On top of all the cancer crap that's struck him now, he also has Alzheimers. More and more lately, he is living in the past. Talking about his RAF days and old cars. When we do talk about football, he can wax lyrical about his Buccaneers, the thing is he no longer remembers the logo change. While I was searching for that poster the other day, I ended up buying dad a retro Buccs cap in the old orange with the swashbuckling buccaneer on it. He loved it. But it did make me think... Once this name change goes through, how will the team will stand on 'throwback' stuff moving forwards. I've got a number of throwback Jersey's, but are companies like Nike or whoever going to still make that stuff? What about any merchandise that references our previous Superbowls? The name and the logo are tied to those things FOREVER. Are they now just about to be swept under the carpet? What about any banners hanging in the stadium etc?

My worry is that this isn't just a change looking forward, but is it going to look back too?

My biggest gripe with all this stuff going on in society at the moment is the purging of history. I am on board with being racially and politically correct in the future. I'm fine with that. It should be expected in modern society, but what I worry about is the erasing of the past. When they are starting to yank episdoes of Fawlty Towers off the air, and having to put warnings on Disney movies from the 90's that 'may cause offense', I start to think the worlds gone mad.

I understand that those TV shows or films are 'of their time' when attitudes were different to what they are now. And while the Redskins name may be considered derogatory and maybe it is right to change with the times, I do not want our rich history to be glossed over and swept away just because a handful of people are overly sensitive toward something that was done/established in a very different era. I don't want those banners (I assume we have championship banners in Fedex?? Having never been there I don't know for sure!) to be nerfed to generic 'Washington' banners and have the logo removed. I want them to stay and for Joe-Sensitive to understand that they are HISTORY.

Hope that all makes sense...

Sorry to get a little personal in there!

Sorry to hear about your Dad brother - you are a good man and I'm sure he had a lot to do with that. Real life tends to put things in their proper context for us unfortunately, but yes, this is a big deal for all Redskins fans regardless of their outward reaction or intentions going forward. I have a lot of the same feelings when it comes to the efforts to 'erase' history because in a modern context it was 'offensive'.

His departure would heal a lot of wounds.

More likely he turns it over to his son who is "woke".

Either way...folks can be steamrolled by the larger movement or do something about it.

Oh well, thought about waiting until the 22nd so I could make it 11years to the day.
Will just settle for this 15,000th, and final post.

As I said before, for me, it's less about the name change, than it is the horseshit reason it's happening. And the worthless despicable group of "people" responsible. They're all part of the same group that's responsible for the rioting, looting, business destroying, statue toppling, history erasing, anthem kneeling, virus panicking, fake news, do-gooder ****wads that are a blight on this country.
I see where some are trying to lay all the blame for this at Snyder's feet. Wondering if getting rid of him would somehow make it all better. That's how the truth is avoided. Which gives people the ability to not say, out loud, what everybody with even a partially functioning brain instinctively knows.

Liberalism, already the reason for the majority of problems slowly destroying this country, is why the Washington Redskins have been unceremoniously scalped, and cut open from crotch to eyeball with a dull deer antler. Turn the other cheek if you choose.

I won't. I wish the new team, and the entire NFL, the very worst of luck. May all their days be filled with loss on the field. Loss at the gate. Loss in the courts. Loss of support.
Bankruptcy would be awesome.

Screw football. We need to save the goddamn country. Vote anything but Democrat for the next 20yrs. Maybe....things could turn around.
Maybe.

Ax, signing off, and staying the **** out. As requested. ;)

That would be a great reply if anyone here had actually said those things. And for someone who dishes it out liberally with the best of them, you sure do struggle to let it roll off your back when you get the same in return.

Take care.

fuck, man....

That is nobody's "fault", but this name change is really shitty. Just really shitty and it is doing exactly what we knew it would.

Yeah, this is tough. One of my cousins from Seattle chose to pour salt in the wounds a while ago on FB. I'm on the verge of blocking him - in all aspects forever.

It's just a horrible day. But we'll get through it. And those who leave may return. Time has a way of making things better and healing what hurts us.

In all fairness, someone from Seattle can’t exactly talk right now.

He is my family and my family out in the Sea-Tac region is full of some good people.

I get that. I’ve been to JBLM three times for work and gotten to know a few of the guys at the base who are locals... but they still can’t jone on us over a football team after the tomfoolery of the last month or two out there... ;)

Just in case it's not obvious, ANYONE here who leaves is always welcome to return, current pissing matches are just that.
I know, bro. I am glad you are one of the cooler heads involved here. If this was my site, I would have probably set it on fire and put it out with my own tears of regret LOL

There's still time ...

The Braves and Blackhawks stood firm and said no to a name or logo change.

Blackhawks are claiming the same thing as DC, namely that intent of logo is to honor Native Americans.

Doesn’t seem as if Chiefs are going to change either.

So much for the objectify movement.

We are all excited to experience the announcement of draft selections IN REAL TIME TOGETHER. If you feel the need to be the first to 'blurt out' the team's picks you are better off staying out of chat and sticking to Twitter.
