Random Commanders Thoughts

Hmmm, will be interesting to see if KOC winds up in Philly. Doesn't Pederson call the plays? So, KOC won't get to call plays OR pick his own staff, as the assistants are already set.

In all fairness, I think KOC's options are thin at this point, unless he does somehow hitch his trailer to someone else's wagon. It became somewhat apparent KOC was the one feeding local mediots (I'm pointing at you Craig Hoffman) about his supposed demand and when that cart came crashing, so did everything else around him.

Again as with Schaffer I don't understand how people that were part of a 3-13 debacle could be so entitled and demanding with a new boss coming in.

When a company I once worked for was bought out and new management asked to interview us in management we were courteous to them and listened to what their vision was going forward.

We didn't go in telling them what WE wanted from them.
I can understand both sides. Some of these guys have had enough buzz about them where they think they can find work elsewhere, and they may also be kind of colored by the toxic environment they've been witness to. I can't blame them for that.

Then the other side is, exactly what you said, sort of a "Who are you again?" when a bunch of demands are made. Even though these guys got some hype, their true accomplishment list from a production standpoint has to be thin.

Look, though, just being honest here in "Random Redskins Thoughts" - when you see all Carolina personnel being hired, it doesn't really speak to me of an unbiased hiring practice... it just so happens that the "best man for the job" were people Rivera worked with for a long time (at least 90% of the open jobs)? By any reasonable standard, that doesn't look like a fair process unless the previous job was a multiple SB winner or the cream of the crop in the NFL (the Panthers were fine, but they don't qualify to that level).

I disagree.
When a team is 3-13, not everyone shares equal blame.
That's the politically correct thing to say in public, but it's not the reality.
Certain parts of the machine have a greater influence on the output, than other parts, when determining wins (especially if there are numerous parts under-performing.
So you could have some excellent top tier pieces, but their performance is basically negated by an overwhelming number of other parts that don't perform well.
If every piece shared an equal part of the blame, and was basically a 3-13 valued piece, then that would make people like McLaurin and Jon Allen expendable.

Kinda got on fansince62's case the other day because he was admonishing the new regimes for making so many Carolina hires. I was waiting to see how things worked out, since at the time there were only a handful.

However, the more personnel coming over from Charlotte the more I have to wonder the same thing...they are definitely not hiring positions based upon the best available, but apparent continuity of what wasn't working in Carolina.

Who said hires had to be unbiased?

I do get your point, but as far as hiring the ‘best man for the job' - I think that's a lot harder to determine than one thinks. Of course previous record of success matters. But it's often hard to assess ‘success' without having worked with someone. Was it due to superior players, quality of opponents, strengths of other units you had nothing to do with, opposing injuries, luck?

There are a lot of hyped coaches who seem like sure fire hits who land with a thud at their next destination.

There's also the ‘chemistry' thing. You can have a great coach who doesn't mesh well, or who wants your job and does things to undermine you, or just doesn't share your ideas/vision. Sure - those are things that can be discussed in interviews? But any leader can tell you about people that interview well but turn out to be a big disappointment or poor fit when they actually get the job.

I think Rivera wants guys he knows he can work with well, that share his vision and know what he wants, and maybe most importantly that he trusts, and who aren't going to run to media folks or the owner to air their grievances.

I'm hopeful that maybe by going this route the learning curve and transition won't be so prolonged and that we may also maintain some coaching longevity and stability instead of firing and rehiring coordinators and other coaches every 2 years.

I wonder if forums existed way back when, if we'd have been as critical of Gibbs being hired and the staff he assembled?

"Who the hell is Don Breaux?"

"Why are we holding on to Petitbon??"

"Charley Taylor is only being kept because he's a fan favorite"

Would've been fun to read those old posts,if they existed. lol

Don't forget 'John Riggins' is a me me me player and a team cancer. We need to send his ass packing!' :)

Don Breaux ?
Even the name sounds nepotistic !
"I'd like to introduce my Bro, as my next hire. But it's spelled 'Breaux' since he's my Cajun Bro"

Schaffer wanted a job he wasn't qualified for - GM while both O'Connell and Turner are largely unknowns.

From a very early age, I didn't know why, but I was drawn to women's brassieres.

Kirk didn't lose this game by himself.

That said I am a bit miffed at talking heads like Kevin Sheehan that said last week that the Saints win somehow vindicated him.

You have to be desperate or have low expectations to think one wild card win justifies $84M guaranteed to a game manager.

With Sheehan and Czaban the Caps had to win the championship for Alex Ovechkin to overcome that label of coming up short.

Seems to me Cousins at 31 has a lot to prove still in that regard.

The other thing I don't like about Cousins is his brag act when he finally does something.

The ‘how do you like me now' chants after last week reminded me of his behavior after beating Green Bay and Aaron Rodgers when he was with the Redskins.

In the end Green Bay clubbed the Redskins in the playoff game which is really all that counted.

I don't know what happened between the two but my guess is O'Connell wanted a bit too much independence as OC than Rivera was willing to grant starting off in Year 1.

Doug Pederson is an offensive mind so this is a growth opportunity for Kevin working with a good qb.

But he will be under Doug's watchful eye too.

KOC will be in a better run organization top to bottom. My guess is he made demands that had to be turned down so he could move on.

Bill Cowher, all of one SB win, a HOFer?

Joe Jacoby, he of three rings and four SBs played, isn't?

KOC was in no position to demand anything. Glorified QBs coach with almost no OC experience. I know. McVay. No one who knows O'Connell would ever put him in the same sentence as McVay. He's not here because Rivera thought Turner was better.

That may turn out to be wrong. We'll see down the road. But KOC is only in LA because Rivera thought he had a better OC in Turner.
