Kirk Cousins Development Tracker

Here's how I view Kirk. When drafted, I think we all agree he was nothing more than an insurance policy. Not expected to play or be the future starter. So fast forward through the RGIII years, and we give him his chance to be the starter. I just can't get past the fact he was and still really is the insurance policy QB. He put up lofty stats, but that was a product of the scheme, he has failed in red zone. That's why I don't see him becoming a franchise guy. Insurance QB's are rarely clutch and playoff worthy. Once again, the future franchise QB is not on the roster. I'm willing to take a step back so that by the time Gruden is gone, we are rebuilding with a new coach and QB at the same time.
 
He was fine in the redzone last year. Not sure he's the root of the problem this year.

And remember Brady was taken in the sixth round as a backup to Drew Bledsoe and only got the start when Bledsoe got injured so these kind of stories do happen.

By the way... not saying Kirk is in Brady's class.

Just that there are parallels.

Red zone issues were more on the play calling. Hey, let's try the fade again. :doh1:

Which means Nate Sudfield could possibly be our Tom Brady.

Somebody needs to lacerate Kirk's liver. :idea:

Well, I never said Kirk was the root of the team's problem. Not in that post or earlier. However, I did say he cost of a couple/few games, and that in and of itself put us on the outside of the playoffs. Coaching probably cost of the season, more so than the defense IMHO. But I digress.

Here's something to look for today in the playoffs. Connor Cook rewrote the Mich St. passing stats Kirk set. He is starting today due to injury. He is a third string QB on the depth chart. Prescott is a third string QB on the depth chart that started due to injury also. It will be interesting to see how Cook does, but admittedly, he is behind the 8 ball not having had any reps during practice for the year, and no playing time, save for last week. If he wins the playoff game, there may be some comparison to Kirk, not to this year, but when Kirk came in when Robert played poorly. Sort of a quasi-litmus test, if you will.

Bad playing but Kirk doesn't get a free ride. That kind of failure requires a group effort. He's the one who didn't see open guy's and that did happen, believe it don't.
 
This team isn't close enough to being a Super Bowl team to simply give up picks for a 35 year old quarterback like Rivers.
 
First, you need a franchise qb to win it all UNLESS you properly build a team. dilfer was no franchise qb just sayin. neither was Rypien.

I think we should have learned by now that you dont roll the dice every year, its better to slowly build a team from the inside out and from the lines. we finally are doing that on O, now we need to do it on D. once we have a solid team with better depth, we can go all in on a franchise guy. until then just get better talent on this team
 
Not a damn thing unless they throw in draft picks. If they do, I am willing to give them a ham sammich for him and picks. If they do not sign Kirk to a long term deal, the team is in rebuild mode. If they franchise Kirk, they defer the reboot of rebuild until 2018.
 
Skins are in a predicament. Give in to Cousins and his outrageous demands, or become the Browns. Yes, it's that bad. The strength of this team is the passing game. They lose the passing game and they are terrible. Defense is atrocious, running game is poor, and now the once heralded kicker looks to fight for his career heading into camp this year. Personally, I'm in a quandary with regards to Cousins due to his predicted demands (% of total salary cap) and the fact that he acts indifferent about being a Redskin. Not sure I'm a fan of what I percieve as a robotic personality/playstyle either. It seems his "robotic-ness" becomes apparent onto the field as he has been observed at times of not being very good at improvising. He has to stick to the system. There is no inner "Rodgers" hidden within Cousins. He's a different kind of QB.

I really don't know what to expcect next year. They could be 2-14 or 10-6. It all seems possible.
 
This reminds me of how we lost Trent Green..... too many things in flux at the same time. We can win with Cousins, providing we put a solid team around him. Pay the man, and move on.
 
Maybe not the chargers, if Kylo gets the San Fran job we could probably name our demands for Kirk. For a 1st and 2nd this yr or 2 firsts I think I'd let him go. Mcluvs could do alot of damage parlaying those picks into more solid players.

I honestly think Kirk wants out. Whether it's away from jay and or the franchise tag he doesn't seem to want a permanent home with the skins. If I'm wrong and it's all contract posture by all means lock him up and build the D into something more than the hot mess it is now.
 
Players wanting to "be here" or be a "'Skin" is largely a fan fallacy. Unless they grew up die hard fans of a team, it's business. They have no more loyalty to the team than an employee has to any employer. Maybe later in their career, but not at the stage Kirk is at. If they come to terms, he'll want to be here. Otherwise he'll want to be wherever they pay him what he thinks he's worth. Sign him and move one. Too many are being far too critical and micro analyzing this. We haven't had his level of play at QB nearly ever, and replacing that is a crapshoot. You don't toss a good QB based on some notion that he'll never win the big games. That's lunacy. Continue to fix the talent deficiency and there will be lots of years of competitive football.
 
Cousins is nothing more than a system qb who has flashes of goodness not greatness, he is not even remotely a franchise qb he is just better than anyone we have had in a long time. that still doesnt mean we should give him a massive contract. stay the course, keep building depth and talent and when we get a shot at a real qb you take it, we jumped the gun hard on rg3 and it burned us.

So have we jumped the gun on Kirk and if so, how?

The guy has had back to back seasons where he rewrote the record book for this franchise and yet you want to throw him out in the street and have this team jump back into the briar patch called the NFL Wilderness?

The whole notion of: Well, let him walk or trade him off...we can always find another QB....after this club just spent 20 years looking for one...utterly ridiculous.

Letting Kirk go will set this team back years...

But hey, I hear Rex Grossman still wants to play, let's go THAT route again.
 
I feel like what we've seen the past couple of years is a wary approach to Kirk BECAUSE we got burnt jumping the gun on RGIII.

Maybe it could be said that we're overcompensating but I prefer the slow and steady, do our due diligence approach.

Kirk may not be the greatest QB in the league and probably never will be, but he's a steady hand, can work our system and win games for us if we put a good team around him, and that includes a defense that doesn't hurt us.

He's also a QB who is capable of learning and developing still. We've seen him stop being the interception machine he was a couple of years ago, he reads plays better and feels the pocket better. My big take away this year was how much more composed I thought he looked in the pocket, even stepping into it when needed.

Is he perfect? No. There's still a lot of room for improvement.

But as DP44 says, the alternative is a lottery. And if he goes the chances are he'll either look at a team that is championship ready (if I was Houston or the Chiefs I'd be looking around. If either of those teams had Kirk they could very well still be playing this weekend!) or to play with a former coach who knows how to use him (hello 49ers). Then while we're rattling off 6 win seasons with Colt at QB and waiting for the next big thing he could be learning how to win playoff games.

I want to see what this team can do once we fix the D. Might take a couple of years, but that just benefits our Offense having some stability and familiarity. I crave a unit like that. Look at the final 4 teams... all have well rounded teams with Offenses that have been allowed to be together long term and grow.
