None of the DT in the draft really have made a difference this year none have been a disruptive force we can look at some them Kenny Clark was probably the most productive of them but he started only 2 games and DT was the biggest need for them. Vernon butler basically non existent this year. Robert ndemehkika of the cardinals some had him linked here because he was out of MS. State. He was a pure bust has the talent of 1st rounder but work ethic of a high schooler. Plus he was injured some. Guy the saints took injured out the gate but did play nice down the stretch but not dominant. Andrew billingsly was short only 2 down player and was rumored to have a knee injury. IR with a knee injury suffered in camp.
Another guy rumored to us was Hargreaves he was on IR this year also.

Thank you for posting this. I was thinking about this about halfway through the season and couldn't think of any rookie DT that were making a difference. I figured there was probably one or two out there, but we just weren't hearing about them. You did the research and found there weren't really any. Maybe it will take them a couple of years to pan out. Or perhaps the GM had an idea that none of these guys would really make a difference, despite many other experts calling it a deep DL draft.

At 6-foot-3, 335 pounds, Taylor would provide needed size up front.

Last year, they signed defensive lineman Ziggy Hood to a futures contract and he ended up starting 14 games.

So now, if he makes the team, we'll have 2 1st round draft choices on the D-line. One of them drafted by Pittsburgh, who apparently are perfect drafters.

Problem solved. Since apparently all you have to do is have high draft picks on the line to guarantee success, right?

My idea was not necessarily taking a DT at #22 for the sake of taking a DT.

My thinking was more checking out what was available at #22 and if no player was a 'must have' at that spot, moving down and getting additional picks in Rounds 2 and 3 to make additional selections.


If Doctson was really a 'can't miss', 'no brainer' pick for McCloughan that's OK. But after that pick, I would have thought about taking DL in Round 2 or especially Round 3.

I personally liked the resume of Jarran Reed, who was taken in Round 2 by the Seahawks. He's a guy with good size who has enough athleticism to make plays laterally down the line. He's a strong guy that brings that inside run presence we have lacked for several years.

Seattle made a good pick in Round 2 in taking him there. No one is expecting Reed to turn into guy that gets 8-10 sacks inside, but for a team like the Redskins that gave up a league worst defensive rush per carry average, he would help on first downs, on third and short and goal line - areas where this team was clearly sub-par.

Has Reed developed into an all-world player in Year 1? No. But he has shown flashes of being that kind of performer in the run game. He doesn't seem miscast in that role, which is what John Schneider clearly indicated was Seattle's intent on taking him in the draft.

We took Cravens in Round 2, who is a tweener and faces some challenges in transitioning to a full-time position in the NFL. Despite his greater athleticism, I don't know if you take a guy who has to find a position coming in as a rookie as high as the second round.

In Round 3, McCloughan said that Kendall Fuller was a definite 'first round talent grade' who fell because of that injury at VA Tech.

But what we saw of him in 2016 on the field to me showed a player that has a LOT of work to do to validate that evaluation.

When I hear 'definite first round grade' I tend to think of a player that has clear flashes of athleticism and anticipation/instinct to develop into a #1 corner on the outside.

Kendall Fuller looked more like a middle-round rookie struggling to find his place on a defense where despite big holes that needed filling, was not necessarily the athlete or natural cover man to step in and help right away.

That pick bears watching.

A bounce back season from Breeland in 2017 and the continued development of Quinton Dunbar could put Fuller in the role of a dime corner.

That's not necessarily a 'value' pick in Round 3.

Phil Taylor is a good pickup as a street free agent.

For once the Redskins are signing a veteran DT who actually projects to DT in terms of size, strength.

He hasn't been the same player since the knee injury in 2015 but as the adage goes a lot of these guys are better the second year after the injury.

If can turn out to be a rotational defender inside vs. the run and in short yardage/goal line, this will be a good move for the club.

On Friday, BBQ will post the first mock draft of the season. I've been working on it for nearly three months and started early this morning with more research. I'm going to be very busy from now until the draft ends, but feel free to offer any input and suggestions along the way.

I should be finished with the first mock by tomorrow night and that will allow me some time to make minor tweaks by next Friday.

All of this will be consolidated into one thread/blog just as we have done in recent seasons. I hope you will participate along the way and post your FA and draft targets, mocks, preferences, suggestions, ideas, thoughts, criticisms, etc.

The way Thomas Rawls ran through the Lions, it's scary to think what he would have done to the Skins run-defense in a wild card game, had we beat the Giants.

Just imagine having to play the Steelers' offense on the road in the playoffs.

If Sean McVay is a genius then Todd Haley is a God.

He has Roethlisberger throwing slants and crosses and wide receiver screens that really play to the talents of Brown, Bell, Bey and the other play-makers.

Low-risk passes with RAC opportunities.

Pittsburgh can throw 35-40 times a game and win because with those kind of plays the potential for turnovers, interceptions is small.

For some reason our version of the WCO is almost completely devoid of these plays.

We don't run screens well, and the coaches really keep Cousins out of throwing those quick slants and crosses.

The Steelers can run the ball down the field with Bell because he is an equally adept pass receiver, so his presence in the backfield doesn't betray whether Pittsburgh is actually going to run or throw.

Here, we haven't really had a back that could do it all, be a rushing threat AND be a real play-maker in the passing game.

We could mix things up a little better by giving Chris Thompson some additional inside rushing attempts as well as using him in his receiver role to keep defenses honest.

We had two wide receivers with enough shake and bake in Jackson and Crowder to throw those crosses off the quick drop-back and give them more RAC opportunities.

With Reed and Davis at TE, we also didn't attack the middle of the field enough IMO.

Where were all of those fast TE on safety and inside linebacker match-ups that Gruden was taking about last offseason when Davis was signed?

As the season rolls back through my memory, we did some things well on offense but we didn't come close to maximizing our assets on that side of the ball, specifically in scoring more points by isolating mismatches whether it be our WRs, TEs or Thompson out of the backfield.

So, if McVay gets selected to be the Rams Head Coach and moves on that isn't a travesty.

We can find another coordinator that can be successful here.

Perhaps we throw for fewer yards overall, but put the ball in the end zone more often?

To be fair it was just into the 2nd Qtr at that point and Rodgers was under the same pressure as Kirk, the Giants had scored 3 and the Packers couldn't move the ball.

Then at the end of the second Rodgers came alive.

If you watch him the pocket is collapsing all around him but he buys so much time with his movement. He dances forward then back, and then rolls out. That TD throw was crazy. We were counting the seconds off out loud on the reply and got to 10 when he threw. Madness.

This game could still go either way, just needs the Giants to get a couple of drives together. Fortunately for Wifey, their offense is terrible.

Seeing how shitastic our defense played in 2016 I could see Scott rethinking TK coming back. Especially considering we have zilch for true NT in year whatever of this 3-4.

Baker was our best d-lineman so someone will pay him decent $. Whether it's the skins or no.

I think part of the reason they didn't bring him back last year was his work ethic and/or physical shape.
And after taking a year off, his physical shape is likely to be even worse.
And during that year off, the fact that no other team was interested in him (after getting cut during Pat's training camp), should also be a red flag.
As for Baker, I really love the guy totally, but NFL-talent-wise - saying you're the best D-lineman on a DL such as the Redskins, isn't really saying a whole lot.
This entire Redskins' DLine is going to be completely rebuilt, to whatever degree that the FO is feasibly capable of doing through draft and FA.
