Burner's Burning Questions: Week Fifteen Grades, Evaluations, Questions

This brings me to a question...

The first mock draft will come shortly after the FA blog. Would you prefer to have a video accompany the prospects we mock or would you prefer a list of possible candidates ranked in order that are not mocked for each selection - in addition to the player listed? I can't do both as that is very time consuming.

I have been looking at prospects since mid October and will continue to do so until the draft arrives. Any other suggestions will be considered. Your input is highly valued.
Speaking for myself, I prefer first to just get an idea of the possibilities, without too much detail. As it seems way early to get overly involved. Lots can happen over the next 4 months. Then, steadily ratchet things up each month, focusing mostly on the free agency aspect. Then, once we see the early FA results, take that last month or so leading up to the draft to saturate the mind with all of the hard work and dedication you put into this every year.

At the end of the day brother, we all look forward to your stuff. However you choose to present it.

Hard to argue Ax... only caveat I would suggest is that our running game isn't a joke - when we've committed to it more often than not it's produced. It's the lack of commitment that's the issue. The other comment I'll make is that, if our production on the red zone looked anywhere near the efficiency we've had outside the 20, we'd be a lot less concerned about the running game production. It's the combination of those 2 things, abandoning the run and struggling in the red zone that has limited us to just being a good offense this year, not a great one.

I'm not sure though, Boone. It almost appears that whenever we do seem to run the ball, enough, and effectively, it's by accident. Or due to the opposition playing poorly.
We don't blow people off the ball.
We don't have a bread and butter play. Either running or passing.

And to touch on the "fear factor" someone alluded to, somewhere. Gruden seems to be well liked by the players. But that's not in his job description. Just like parents trying to be their kids friends, instead of their parents. No one seems to fear his wrath. Not the players. Not the coaches.

I believe he's regressed this season. Not very encouraging.

That is what I do every year anyway. Thanks for the input.

So this brings me to the same question...edited a bit

The first mock draft will come shortly after the FA blog - just like every year. Would you prefer to have a video accompany the prospects we mock (as has been done) or would you prefer a list of possible candidates ranked in order that are not mocked for each selection - in addition to the player listed? I can't do both as that is very time consuming.

One other note - it is virtually impossible to know who Scot targets in FA. I will list team needs, our FAs with predictions, possible cuts and how much is saved. It is fruitless to list FAs from other teams who could be a target. It's a waste of time and resources.

Speaking of the run game and rush attempts...

@Russellmania621 skins averaging their second fewest runs per game in 50 years!
— Dan Steinberg (@dcsportsbog) December 22, 2016

Really not surprising when you consider....

The HC and OC don't value running the ball because neither understand how to use it or the strategy behind it.

It's why when we do run, there's no flow to it. It comes off as "Well hell, we haven't run the ball yet, let's try it and see what happens?" It's more an after thought than a deliberate plan.

As someone pointed out earlier, Jay's a former QB and as coaches, they lean more towards the pass than they do the run.

It's not only that, its that he's a former AFL Qb. That league is not known for any kind of great rushing attack to begin with so how would Jay Gruden understand it's importance here in this league?

Our only hope is that this offseason, Bill Callahan pleads the run game's case in terms of clock management and benefit to the defense(complimentary football: a novel concept!) and passing game.

Maybe it sinks in? If it doesn't, we won't ever get anywhere meaningful and eventually Jay has to go.

Because if Scot's serious about being a physical, old school style football team, there's no way you can do that by trying to throw it all over the park.

Next few months will be very telling........

The last few weeks should tell you that he won't be around next year. We are probably hoping for a trade - a late round pick for him, but that is very unlikely.

Not a big market for mediocre RBs. More likely going the way of Alf.

A little help here...

I prefer a list. I like doing research so I like more choices. Plus looking into one usually means stumbling on to someone else possibly not on a list.

Maybe not the best place to put this but do you have any idea how many (if any) guys have hung around the PS this year? Granted guys will get cut here and there and then resigned but players who mostly stay on.

I vote for a list. Every player looks like a stud on their videos.

Ok, I will do a list. If anyone wants vids, you are certainly welcome to post them when mocks are posted. That would be a big help.

Thanks so much for the input. Any other ideas are always encouraged and considered.

Safeties:
Question: Is it safe to say, “YUCK”?
Answer: That is putting it honestly and succinctly.
Grade: F

Where do these guys go once the play starts anyway? Abducted by aliens?
Granted there's less distinction these days between FS and SS but the Skins really need one in that Free spot. You gotta be able to back up your CB's. (Hence the term, 'Safety')

Special Teams:
Question: Are we still worrying about Dustin Hopkins?
This year he got a pass and the Redskins didn't bring in a single kicker, even for a mock challenge like most teams do. No pass next year - someone will be there to light a fire under his butt. I don't see him being replaced but help in getting refocused.

Coaching:
Question: What can we say about the coaches this week?
Answer: Offense. They lost the game and put the defense in difficult situations.

Defense. They couldn’t stop a wounded quarterback and an aging running back.
I'd add that they couldn't stop a TE (Olsen 6/85 yds) and a WR (Ginn 4/64/1TD) that you absolutely knew where the primary targets. They even gave up 28 yards to Ed Dickson (1/28). That's right, the same Ed Dickson that used to be with the Ravens. Half of Cam's completions and over half his yardage. Who gives up 100+ yards (113 between the 2) to TE's not named Gronkowski anyway?

IAnd to touch on the "fear factor" someone alluded to, somewhere. Gruden seems to be well liked by the players. But that's not in his job description. Just like parents trying to be their kids friends, instead of their parents. No one seems to fear his wrath. Not the players. Not the coaches.

I was listening to the Burgundy and Gold Hour this morning (The Rick Snider, Matt Cones podcast) and they touched upon this. He said when Jay blew up after the Arizona game that that was untypical of him and that to be honest players these days don't pay any attention to those those kinds of rants anyway.

I'm inclined to agree to be honest.

In an age where players get paid in the multi millions they're not going to care about being ranted at. In fact it would probably have the opposite effect in most cases. Coaches tirades are a relic of the past, when players didn't earn much, worked two jobs and felt lucky to even be IN the NFL. But I really don't believe it is much now. It's like kids these days. You start yelling at them and all they'll do is eventually tune you out. For most players it's worse because they'll just ignore it comfortable in the fact that they're getting paid, especially the highly paid players, the ones that you need to make an impact. They'll tune a coach out and go get their millions elsewhere, especially if it's a dysfunctional franchise that they're leaving behind.

I honestly don't think it's Belli's no-nonsense attitude that gets players playing at the Patriots. It's the fact it's the PATRIOTS. Plus if Belli does ream them out he's earnt that privilege by wearing 4 Superbowl Rings and multiple divisional championships.

Players have two primary motivations. The money and the ring. A coaches tirades are pretty low on the motivating front these days in my opinion.

Players go all out on the Patriots because that team is the one they want to stay on because they have a good chance at a ring there. Simple as. They'll play their guts out for that chance. Most of them could care less about playing heart and soul for the Redskins. If we want that to change we need to change the culture and be a team that competes every year and is a contender.

The other thing is that sports are way more Player led than Coach led these days. Not the way it should be, but unfortunately the truth, and the players know it. The Patriots are probably the only case in the League where the Coach would come over anyone else, but even that would be debatable if it came to a Brady or Belli choice.

Do the Packers blink at firing McCarthy if Rodgers wants him out? What if Eli and Beckham want a new coach? Go through the list of top players (especially QB's) in the League and think about what Management would do if the player said they wouldn't play for their coach.

You can get away with it if you're a Cleveland, or a team like the Bears where there is no established Franchise star, but in the modern NFL you've got to be a players coach on the whole and you pick your spots for the outbursts in order to get your players attention but not push them to the point they won't play for you.

Players know a desperate lame duck coach when they see it. Gruden hasn't EARNED the Belli level of respect in regards to his pedigree. That takes time and success.

Look at the way the 2013 team tuned Shanahan out. And he DID have Superbowl pedigree. No amount of wrath from him would have turned that team around that year, the players just weren't listening because he couldn't back it up and RGIII knew that Management had his back as the saviour of the Franchise. The equation was QB > HC.

I'm not being a Gruden fan guy here. God knows the man has his flaws as a head coach.

He's pass heavy, he pays lip service to the run (if the run game shows early success he'll generally stick with it, but the minute it's ineffective BOOM!) and he's too offense orientated.

But on the other hand I can't overlook the job he did turning the team around after the aforementioned 2013 disaster. That is possibly the worst Redskins team I've seen in my years as a fan. Not just the record being bad, but the general dysfunction of the team. This team was so toxic most established coaches wouldn't touch us with a barge pole.

But he came in and started cleaning it all up. Now with Scotty on board they've started to turn this organisation around.

It just seems to clear to me that this organisation is now heading in a direction we've prayed it would head in for 20+ years.

Snyder has backed off and stopped getting involved in player decisions day to day.
We have what seems to be a Franchise QB at last, that was groomed in house rather than overspending on has-been free agents.
We have a good GM carefully pursuing a long term rebuild plan rather than the random FA and draft of years gone by.
We have a cohesive locker room that has none of the toxicity of recent years.
We don't dominate newspaper column inches for all the wrong reasons.
We have a team that almost always plays hard and never gives up.
We have an offense that is bordering on elite, and given another year or two will hopefully BE elite.
We've improved our record every year. (Yes I know that this year even if we win out it'll only be by half a game, but our schedule was a tougher one this year, I take that into account.)
We're bordering on have a winning record 2 years in a row, for the first time in 20 years (discounting 8-8 seasons - 1996: 9-7 and 1997: 8-7-1)

Just think about what happens next if they get rid of Gruden this year... Not saying this will happen, but I could EASILY see it happening...

Is it Scotty or Snyder that make the choice? If Snyder then the newspapers are full of how he's meddling again.
If it's unclear, ditto.
If it's Scotty then he brings in his coach and a new system
New system means time to implement, which probably means that this offense takes a step back for at least year 1
Kirk, now unclear on the future direction of the Franchise refuses the long term deal and gets tagged again.
Worse still, the Giants and the Cowboys continue to make strides going forwards as we go backwards.
Worse if Kirk is a product of this system, because now we need a new QB too.
Scotty's plan gets pushed back a year or two as now he needs to fix the offense again as well as the defense.
Now the team starts to get toxic again.
Team posts a losing record.
Dead last in NFC East.
Team is now a destination free agents don't want to come to.
Our own free agents start to leave for greener pastures, to our disgust they go to our divisional rivals.
Meanwhile Gruden gets an OC or HC job somewhere else.
Kirk's been a disaster in whatever new system is in place and the Skins decide to start again at QB. Kirk leaves...
Follows Gruden to new team, plays in old system, puts up pro-bowl numbers again...

OK, so the last bit is a bit far. LOL, but the point is have you seen our record and witnessed this team for the past 25 years? This stuff HAPPENS to the Redskins because we've proved time and again that we're THAT Franchise. We're the Franchise that can draft a well regarded top QB and then break him irretrievably in one year.

You know what... I have way too free time on my hands at work as we near Christmas! Sorry for the long post. LOL

Running Game...

I'll keep this short! LOL

I think this starts at the O-Line. We pass protect much better than we run block. I'm not sure why, I'm no expert on that, but I do wonder if it has to do with Long and Lauvao. Long has done ok in the Centre spot, but I think we all know Lauvao isn't the answer there. I'd like to see a couple of GOOD players at these spots.

Also for all I do love FatRob... lets be honest... he's no stud at running back. So at best our running game is ordinary when it works. We're not a team that has the capability to be consistently breaking 30 or 40 yard runs. Not gonna happen.

Then there is the fact that we have one of the best receiving corps in the League, if not the best. Reed, Jackson, Garcon, Crowder, Davis. Not many teams can boast a corps with that kind of skill and especially to link that up with an O-line that is one of the best in the League at pass protection. It's the dangiing carrot of temptation...

So then we get Gruden and McVay and their Pass orientated nature.

They use the run as a novelty to throw variety in from time to time to stop being too predictable.

But the minute that it doesn't work they go back to what they know will work. Throw it.

Games go like this... Run for 3 yards (Ok then!)... run for 4 yards (now we're motoring)... pass for 7 yards (First down, here we go)... run for a 3 yard loss (Disaster, right pass again!)... pass for first down... pass... pass... pass... pass... pass (hold on we should put a little variety in to keep the defense honest!)... run for 2 yards (Nope, passing is much better!)... pass... pass... pass...

And that's the problem in a nutshell. The temptation with this offense is to pass because we're good at it (usually!). The Passing game is proven, the running game is not in their minds.

Seems obvious to me though that our best games have been the ones where we were the most balanced. Some of that is due to match ups where our O-line has been able to open up gaps. The Panthers stuffed our run blocking this week. No chance of balance, but tweak this line on it's week spots, give them another year with Callahan and see if we can draft a stud Running Back and maybe next year the running game will prove to be consistent and earn some trust from Gru and co.

I don't think they're stupid, they KNOW that they are unbalanced and that we should run more... But the temptation of that passing game is a strong one.

No offense, but what do commentators know about locker room dynamics, what is effective and what's not, or whether coaches interactions make a difference? They aren't in the locker room. They aren't involved in those dynamics in any way. They're just conjecturing.

I think those that say coaches attitudes and communication have no impact are 100% wrong.

Players may make a ton of money, but they are still human, and at some level they've each grown up with the desire to win and to perform at a high level ingrained in them. They have also been raised with a respect for their coaching staff. Of course the intensity of these desires and relationships vary dependent on individuals and personalities.

But those things matter - even in the NFL.

The Redskins are a conundrum aren't they?

A team with a bottom third defense and offense that is pass first and doesn't have the ability to run and keep the opposing QB off the field.

The fact the Redskins are 7-6-1 and still in a hunt for a playoff spot is evidence of how mediocre the NFL has become.

I don't know, there may have been a time that 11 wins were cause for a single wild card team but now for the most part, it's 9-10 wins vying for the second wild card spots.

Yeah, there have been some low end division champions but the eventual 'contenders' still seem to pull away in the playoffs.

It was fun for those fans of yesteryear's dynasties but it stunk for the bulk of fandom.

Many have said it's a 'week to week' NFL, teams expected to excel can flounder with no seemingly sense to it all. That's the 'new NFL' and it keeps the interest high amongst fan bases when their teams still have something to play for.

Even our now 'lowly' Redskins still have chance....... pull off another Packers type game in Bear's land and we'll be right back at it with visions of sugar plums dancing away.... which is still a lot more fun than picking lint from the navel and waiting for the draft.

BBQ for week sixteen is cancelled. I fell ill on Christmas Eve morning and spent a good part of the day in bed, thus missing the game. I'm glad for a win and a Bucs loss. The grades likely would've been good, especially the secondary.

I'm feeling 100% now and look forward to the games on Sunday.

Anyone is free to give their own evaluations and grades here. I would like to read them and see what you thought of the game.
