Warner has Kirk at 6 on his top 10 list for the regular season. Not bad. He also thinks we should franchise him next year to give him one more year to prove himself. My main issue with that is that it might piss Kirk off and he'll refuse any further contract offers, forcing the tag each year, which gets exceedingly expensive, or a release. He's spent 3 years riding pine and doing all the right things so I could see how being "wanted" would be important. Hopefully they can come to a happy deal with a 3 year out.

Are teams allowed to use the Franchise Tag on the same player, for consecutive years ?

the Rams used it on one of their offensive tackles at least twice maybe 3 times
 
I'd imagine it pisses off the player because it puts them in a position to lose guaranteed money to a career ending injury.
 
I still kinda suspect that the Kirk Cousins contract situation is one of the reasons that RGIII is still on the team. I also think if the Skins move RGIII it will be after Captain Kirk has resigned.

Because if he doesn't and goes elsewhere we have a huge hole at QB.

I spent a while wondering earlier in the season why RGIII wasn't released or traded, why was he taking up a spot on the roster looking sad on the team bench. I started to wonder if it was a long range insurance policy incase Cousins bombed badly early in the season, or now in late season after what amounts to an unexpectedly great half season of play (I think he really hit his stride on that Tampa Bay game and hasn't really looked back since!) if he didn't resign here.

Now I expect he will. I think he'll get a reasonably generous multi year contract with some opt out clauses (If Scotty is making the deals then I think he's savvy enough not to tie Cousins to the Franchise like a brick just in case!).

But if he doesn't.... then we know the FA class is very poor. Which leaves us with McCoy (If he stays) or we draft a QB early and then throw him into the fire. Which is something I hope we've learned our lesson on. What else is there out there that we could do and be palatable to the fanbase?

The back up plan.... RGIII.

He's the one QB you could sell most (not all) of this fanbase on, because that 2012 season is remembered and has earnt him a lot of goodwill. Just seeing the Gruden thread on this board (amongst other threads) proves that half of this fanbase at least really still loves RGIII and would love to see him get another shot. You could easily spin it if Gruden and Scott came out with the platitudes of "He's spent a year on the bench studying and learning and now we think that he's both healthy and that he's legitimately ready to lead this team" etc.

Then go into 2017 with him back under centre and possibly with a drafted QB behind him to learn the system, with the hopes that he can keep the franchise afloat at least, if not show some flashes of that 2012 brilliance.

If he succeeds then Gruden and Scott look like heroes. "Yeah we felt he needed time to learn how to play as a pocket passer in a pro style offence, and we decided to bench him so he could learn without the pressure of the media. It allowed Kirk to not have to look over his shoulder and now RGIII is our Franchise QB of the future. Aren't we great, HTTR!"

And if her were to bomb then Gruden and Scott still come out relatively unscathed. "Hey we gave him every opportunity. We benched him last year so that he could spend some time without any pressure learning his craft and getting those legs fully healthy. Then we gave him a shot at the starter job again. Not our fault he blew it, we did everything we could. Aren't we great. HTTR!"

Just my musings, could be way off base, but I have thought all year that keeping RGIII was a little odd.

That being said.... Cousins re-signs ad makes his cash, McCoy leaves, we draft another QB and RGIII is traded. And I sit and watch Redskins games sadly wearing my RGIII shirt, wishing him all the best and saving up the cash for a Cousins shirt and watch us win multiple Superbowls! Aren't we great! HTTR! :D
 
the problem with franchising Kirk is that if he doesn't like it the year after it he can walk and you can't do a thing about it.

gotta sign this dude now if you think hes the future.
 
Well I'll say it again. If Cousins goes anywhere else, he may enhance his checking account, but he would likely fail miserably, on the field.
New team, new scheme, huge contract, expectations of immediate success, leading to criticism he has never faced before.

It would actually make me question his intelligence a little.

Besides, his grading period doesn't end until we are hoisting the Lombardi, or eliminated. How, and why, either of those scenarios happen will be a major factor in dollar amount he'll receive.

He's hasn't faced a fraction of what is yet to come.
He's never faced much national heat. Local press is the JV team.

And, even they will turn it up if he signs a big contract here, and doesn't win, all.....the......time.
 
There is no scenario in which RG ever takes another snap for this team. He wasn't released in season because there was absolutely no benefit to doing so. In fact, it would have just caused a lot of noise. Removing drama is obviously a big deal to both Gruden and McL IMO. Had he become a malcontent, it would have happened, but we all no RG has no shortage of class. Never a real chance of that happening.

As far as tagging Cousins go, I believe they can tag a player indefinitely, it just goes up so much each year it is prohibitively expensive. Probably a moot point. The things Kirk does are standard QB skills. He's just doing them very well. He's honing his craft and has been steadily improving all year. I think the QB's we see be one hit wonders typically come in and play well quickly and fade. They'll reach a deal. The overall size will look stupid but the guarantee will be reasonable and they'll have an out after 3 years. I'm guessing total will be 80-100. Not a commentary that he's worth that much, but that's how the game is played.

Do players really falter due to external noise? I don't think so. They falter due to pressures on the field. If he has a bad game and then falters afterward, it won't be from media noise. It will be from the pressure he places on himself to be successful. Then the media noise will come. Managing that is the difference between truly good players and mediocre ones. The NFL is littered with physically talented players who didn't have the right mental fortitude. It isn't about IQ either. We've all hear pro athletes who make you wonder if they can tie their own shoes. He had his confidence shaken last year, in large part due to the pressure he put on himself. He learned how to overcome that and has demonstrated this year repeatedly that he bounces back and doesn't dwell on negative outcomes. I'll trust in Gruden and McL to have the best handle on this aspect of Kirk's psyche.
 
I'm going to venture to say that every player hears the noise from the mediots as well as fans and it does influence their play. How much? I don't know. But it definitely does get to them and they admit they read/see/hear it all the time.

Cousins also visited Jay Gruden's brother Jon in Tampa during the offseason to study tape and throw.

As they sat in the darkness with Redskins game tape playing on a big screen, Jon gave Cousins a nickname: "The Vigilante."

"What do you mean by that, Coach?" Cousins wanted to know.

"You take the law into your own hands," Gruden said.

The point was Cousins was being overaggressive in his decision-making.

"He wanted to see me be a little more conservative and patient in where I chose to throw the football," Cousins said. "He respected my desire to attack, but he knew it needed to be more calculated."

Really like this passage as well:

After the Redskins beat the Saints in November, Cousins approached Brees.

"I don't know what to say except I study you," he told him. "You are a first-ballot Hall of Famer, and I'm trying to learn from you."

As the Redskins were about to wrap up a recent victory, center Brian de la Puente and Cousins had a sideline discussion captured by NFL Films.

"What's your cadence on victory [formation]?" asked de la Puente, who played three years for the Saints.

"Do you want to go on the quick or on one?" Cousins said. "WWDBD? What would Drew Brees do?"

Brees handles the protection calls at the line of scrimmage for the Saints. The Redskins, like many teams, had assigned protection calls to the center.
Cousins wanted to be like Brees, and he lobbied for the authority.

"Realized I would be much more effective if I handled it, and started to study how Brees and other top guys have total ownership," said Cousins, who now handles the protection calls. "They don't let somebody else make calls that they are fully capable of making on their own. … I've learned that it has to be my show in order to be successful."

Read an article about Brady once, and his endless, almost manic desire to learn/study/command every aspect of his game. The suggestion was that it was his drive, and will to win, which really set him apart. Kirk may or may not continue to ascend, but one thing at least we are learning is that he's got the burning commitment to learning his craft that guys without the all magical physical skills need to become great. Brady had it, Montana had it, Brees seems to have had it ... that isn't taught ... some people are just born with it.

I agree, but the way they react is more a reflection of how they react to pressure on the field. Brady heard the noise surrounding deflate gate. He internalized that into a great big bag of F all of you, I'll show you all how stupid it was when I continue to shred defenses. Kirk seems to be a guy that thrives on proving his detractors wrong. Like all greats, he's his own worse critic. Hopefully he'll prove to be a long term great. Just win baby and every thing else is a cake walk.
