Kirk Cousins Development Tracker

I think Kirk has exceeded all expectation thus far in regards to how he has improved and how he is playing currently. He's having a good year at the least. Still a few games left to define it though. Is his current play the exception or the rule? I think it's reasonable to assume given his steady improvement, it's closer to the norm than not. There's nothing about his game that shouldn't carry over to next year. He's getting game experience and putting it to work. It's likely he'll continue to improve and land somewhere better than he is now. I'm not seeing anything to make me suspect otherwise yet. Of course, he may regress and settle somewhere less. Maybe what we're seeing is an aberration. In either case, this is the NFL, and his market will be determined by the results of this year; so far pretty good. Win/Loss is not a factor in his value, as NFL executives will be more impartial in grading his performance vs. the performance of the team than fans are. So we either pay him market value, or do as Smooty suggests and franchise him to get one more full seasons look. I'm not sure there is a definite right or wrong way to go here without the benefit of foreknowledge. I'm not a fan of using the tag as a method of player evaluation. You don't pay a player franchise money for a year if the player hasn't earned franchise pay. Kirk hasn't. I also don't think his market will be for franchise type money. It may be for more than some of you would like, but at the end of the day, it's not my money so I don't care. If McCl has seen enough to think Kirks the answer for the foreseeable future, then whatever the team pays is worth it.

My opinion on what I've seen so far is his upside is somewhere between pretty good to something special. Every concern I've seen mentioned, and they were all warranted, he's overcome this year. The only real remaining one is will he sustain it consistently long term. I've seen enough to believe he will, but I understand the wait and see approach advocated by some who aren't sold yet.

There ya go, our observations from outside the building can not possibly yield the same insight to those on the inside.

Scot is also evaluating options outside the building, I know I trust his judgement over what I witness over the few hours a week watching games to get a sense of where a player is at.

He probably has a better scouting system than I do too, my scouts are you guys and most of the time I'm not sure I can even trust that ;)
 
Cool listen in on the video. Seems like he's seeing the same thing us fans are. Stay aggressive and don't let the foot off the gas. I think most of this comes down to everyone becoming confident with those around them, players and coaches alike. The building of a team before our eyes. Functioning the way it's supposed to, and something not seen here in far too long.

It's no different than the reverence Scot McCloughan gets. It's based on success. The only difference is, Shanahan is a lot harder to like.

I'm telling you - Cousins is a fiery guy and he's a leader. Nit pick him all you want - but what I see is confidence, a guy who wants none of the credit, and a winner.

I think many just don't want to buy in after being let down so many times before over the years. I agree with you on Cousins at this point, and the video clip confirmed what I had said in another post, Cousins has been on a short leash. His comments about not taking the foot off the gas, and the early play calling says a lot. I don't know what his ceiling is, but if the staff lets him go out and play with an aggressive game plan, we may have a QB that can be a consistent winner with the right supporting cast.

That being said, I'm still not sold on Gruden just yet. :)

Years ago..my first Christmas married, my new bride got me a Patrick Ramsey jersey for Christmas. He was the starter at the time,had a few good games, I was excited at the gift and had hope for the future at QB.

He went south in a hurry.

Years later, a good friend at work got me a Redskins clock with Jason Campbell on it. Starter at the time...he went south soon after.

Couple of years ago, the wife and kids got me an RG3 T shirt, #10 on the front,Griffin and 10 on the back. I opened that up, was surprised,thankful and loved the meaning behind that gift...but that voice in the back of my mind said "Oh Noooooo".

You all know what happened shortly thereafter.

I swore off jerseys for a while after that. This year in the lead up to Christmas, when asked, I told the family that I do not want any current player jerseys. They couldn't believe it.

My son was like "Seriously Dad??". My reply: "It's just bad luck all the way around. From the player to the team to me...lol"

This year? I open a gift that contains a jersey.....WHAT?....but wait! A #44 John Riggins jersey with a Redskins knit hat to polish it off!

The moral of this story? Kirk Cousins is safe. :smile-new:

1) cherry picking is precisely what I am revolting against by all the folks who seem to be voicing an un-natural love...excuse me....excessive excitement for Cousins.

2) ummmm....the Skins/Cousins are right where I said they would be at the beginning. I saw him: an 8-8 type QB.

3) I find the the whole opposite and equal reaction to be comical...if you must know the truth. Kirk Cousins has done some things well....and others not so well. I don't care to reprise them...yet again...cuz it gets boring after a point and I lose interest in all the side emotional dramas.

4) The volume is being amped up...especially by the nitwits in radio land....in part because it suits their need...and in part because the options are limited at this point.This is not a good QB draft, the expectation at this point is that no quality FA QBs will be in the mix....so where does that leave us? Taking a chance, if Kirk has a good agent, in spending way more than a single season with no wins against quality/winning teams and a losing record on the road warrants - risky business IMO.

I'm not anti-Kirk. I just don't believe in paying for an asset more than it's demonstrated worth. most on this board are betting on the come....and not the record. that's fine. folks are so starved for competence they are willing to jump on the first improvement. well....I never went ugly in college..if you'll excuse the digression....and have opted for quality my whole adult life. that takes some time, detachment and judgment. but it pays a whole lotta dividends. IMO, we aren't at the stage yet of claiming quality. others are free to disagree.

I truly don't care whether anyone agrees with me or not. bandwagons have never been my thing from the git go.

I don't know what ****ing wagon you're on, I just know it's a dreary incessant depressing one. Bandwagon looks pretty great by comparison.
 
I understand wanting to wait and see. We've had our hopes dashed more then we all like to admit. That being said, I find the continued refusal to at least admit that Kirk's playing better than an average 8-8 QB comical. Cherry picking apparently goes both ways.
 
It's a 'sucker's choice'. Being 'realistic' and 'sensible', or being extremely excited and hopeful, those aren't mutually exclusive positions. We can and should be both. I will confess I'm tired of hearing about poor Redskins fans. With the exception of a handful of perennially successful teams, name another fanbase that hasn't experienced the same exact disappointments and heartache (or far worse)? Just within our own division, would anyone trade places with Dallas over the past decade? Philly fans have never had a Super Bowl victory. There are probably at least 20 teams who've experienced the same kinds of disappointments our Redskins have over the past couple decades. At least we've had a couple of playoff runs and are on the cusp of another.

So let's stop pretending our misery is something special. It's not. The one area the Redskins have been league-leading horrible in is continuity. No team has had more head coaches, coordinators, and probably starting QBs than ours has. And a thinking fan has to believe that fact may not just be a symptom of a lack of success, but also a causative factor. And the ultimate irony, at the first signs of struggle, adversity, or growing pains, most Redskins fans start screaming for more of the same.

Just my opinion, but I wish Redskins fans would man and girl up. If you want to root for an NFL team, make that fandom a core part of your life, then you have to recognize that opens you up to all possibilities. Horrible, heartbreaking loss, glorious, vindicating victory, or some hellish stretch of mediocrity in between. It's all possible and it's all part of the gig.

Now - let's get back to talking about how Kirk Cousins is the next Tom Brady.
