I remember Allen saying that they were going to rely on the scouts. Something he implied was not the case under the Shamaham. And that he, Allen, would serve as the tiebreaker when the coaches and scouts couldn't reach an agreement. I think that's how most places work. For all the banter thrown around about Allen being the main talent evaluator, I've never seen it backed with fact.

Maybe I'm misremembering.
 
I have little faith in the talent evaluation process with the team but I'm on board with your last post '62. We haven't had a competent O line since Jansen departed...for the record I wasn't sold on the idea of drafting a franchise qb before we fixed the line but will admit feeling all giddy about the idea in 2012. Griffin brought hope and joy for that one season. I'm back to my original view that in most cases (in almost every case...) Drafting a Qb with high picks usually fails to yield diddly squat when a team can't field a sound Oline. Yet team after team continues with the trend that you build a team around a qb...
I'll give you Andrew Luck to support that idea, but by and large there are far more cases that show it might help pack the stands for a year or two and nothing more( Matt Ryan, Sam Bradford, Vince Young, Derek and David Carr, Harrington, Cam Newton, RG3, Sanchez,...you know I can do this all day...) It's just as likely that you find your franchise guy in the later rounds Aaron Rogers, Brady, Roethlisberger, Romo, Russell if a team has a decent Oline to learn behind and a defense that can keep the score close. I don't believe I can be swayed away from that thought any longer.

Allen, like everyone else associated with this organization, is simply one more elephant in a target-rich environment these days.

conceding I'm one of the loudest wankers around here......it's simply draining isn't it? 2012 was a tease we all knew was going down the tubes before the season even ended given how the QB was being dismantled. when are we going to be a professionally run franchise?

Free Agency is where you target specific positions. Come draft time, as long as a guy is close enough, grade wise, to the BPA, you can go there. If not, you go BPA, or trade back, if possible, and get more picks. Winning organizations general follow this path. We may not be one yet, but I believe we have to start operating like we are, now. It has to start somewhere.

Stability of systems/head coaches, makes the job of the scouts exponentially easier to do.
 
It's early, but this draft class overall looks weaker than last season, in which the first round was filled with can't-miss prospects all over the place.

We just saw what was likely the best WR draft class of the last ten years. ODB, Watkins, Evans, Benjamin and others. Add that to Clowney, and it was a free-for-all in that first round.

This year's top ten features a tweener NT that we may not want to reach for, and a few other players that don't quite match the names of last year.

There is one star FS that should go early, a kid from Alabama. And one of the top two tackles could work.
 
Ok one quick interjection here that is an aside:

This place IS full of smart people and we're ALL fans of the Redskins. It would be wise of all of us (I include myself) to remember that and remember who the actual targets of our collective ire are. It's not each other, none of us is responsible for the state of this team, but sometimes we go at each other like it is because of who we support or don't. Ramp it back and leave out the personal commentary because you don't like someone's opinion or analysis. I know some people have some history but the back forth is getting a little tiresome to wade through. Things have been getting a bit nastier lately and I think it would do us all some good to take 5 and remember we're all on the same side...one that is behind this team improving.

Washington Redskins: Andrus Peat, OT, Stanford
The Redskins could use offensive line help and safety. I'm not convinced Bruce Allen would draft a safety this high though. His track record is corners in the first round and safeties later on. Plus, the Redskins are getting good value with the top offensive lineman.

Over the past two seasons, Peat has been rock solid at protecting quarterback Kevin Hogan. Peat also had success in the ground game. He is strong enough to be a downhill run-blocker and also is agile enough to block in a zone scheme. The 6-foot-7, 310-pounder has excellent size and athleticism.

Peat had a good game against USC this year. He did well in his plays against Leonard Williams and was generally rock solid minus a couple of snaps. Peat had a similar outing against Washington with generally a quality outing minus a couple of plays. The Cardinal moved David Yankey inside to guard for 2013 because the coaches believed they had a star left tackle in Peat. Judging by Stanford's 2013 season, their belief looks like the correct one.
 
And for those worried about or hopeful for Winston, I'd be surprised if he's even there when we pick.

Walter has him going at 3 to the Bucs:

Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Jameis Winston, QB, Florida State

On the field, Winston is a better prospect than Marcus Mariota, and over time, that could push teams to overlook the character discrepancy. Even with the off-the-field concerns, I have Winston ranked first on my big board. He is a rare athlete who has natural poise as a pocket passer. His phenomenal field vision, anticipation and decision-making are extremely impressive for a college quarterback. He is a rare talent. The biggest issue for Winston is off-the-field problems, and some teams are going to pass on him because of it.

It's draining all right. But I'm one of those guys who believes NFL teams, even the truly awful ones, are never more than a few moves and a little luck from turning it around. Oh yes, the Redskins are awful. No doubt about it. But the difference between 3-9 and 9-3 is not as unconquerable a journey as it appears.

The Cardinals are 9-3. Cincinnati is 8-3-1. Dallas is 8-4.

Those aren't elite franchises with great FO's, great coaching, great personnel and great QB's all in place. In today's NFL that's not necessary. Y

You just have to be competent, get a workable blend of talent and coaches, get some lucky bounces of the stupid-shaped ball, be on the right side of some zebra decisions, and suddenly you catch a wave. Once you're moving, it builds on itself. Winning has it's own momentum, just like losing.

Right now it's hard to envision reversing the momentum here as soon as next year, I'll grant you. Or even the year after that. But don't rule it out.

We'll have our day again.

I'd agree about our scouting more if

1) we knew from year to year that their recommendations were actually getting drafted, as opposed to choices of different coaches, GM, etc.

2) they had specific kinds of players they were looking for to fit into well-defined roles, as opposed to always changing every couple of years based on changes in philosophy on both sides of the ball.

We might have incompetent scouts. On the other hand, we might have awesome scouts simply pissing into ever-changing winds.
 
Final scouting report from Walter, on the safety, projected anywhere between 8 and 11.

Chicago Bears: Landon Collins, S, Alabama
The Bears grab a safety to pair with Kyle Fuller.

The Crimson Tide has been a talent factory for defensive backs for the NFL, and Collins is the program's 2015 model. In 2014, Collins has 75 tackles with five passes broken up and three interceptions. Collins had monster games against Florida and West Virginia. Against Ole Miss, he was picked on repeatedly and burned for two touchdowns, but it should have been worse as he was all but beaten for another long touchdown before the tight end dropped the pass. Collins (6-0, 215) is a physical strong safety who is good in the box and the short part of the field. He isn't a one-on-one pass-coverage safety.

In 2013, Collins recorded 70 tackles with four tackles for a loss, six passes broken up, one interception and two forced fumbles.

I think that's a good idea, to give Kirk another chance before the season's over.
Something tells me we see a different Kirk. For one thing, turnover issues are probably a much easier problem to correct, compared to other flaws in a QB, such as fundamental mechanics, reading defenses, pocket presence, etc. I think he's got enough potential, not to give up on him so quickly.
Plus, knowing the type of guy Kirk is, I'd bet that ever since his benching, he's been eating, sleeping, breathing methods on how to not turn the ball over......whatever the **** that means, or involves !!!
