PFT: Gruden says the “clock’s ticking” on Griffin

Uhh, what reality are you living in? Griffin looked horrible. The Redskins would have won that game with a half decent game manager in there playing QB. Griffin should be benched.

Brandon Meriweather doesn't whiff on Gore on the 4th and short and we win that game.

Oh boo hoo. His spirit is broken? Sounds like sand in his vagina to me. Even though I didn't see it. These men are there to be coached. He's starting to fall in line with the media dealings, now all he has to do is get better at what he can't do well right now. He still has time but its up to him whether he uses that time to pout or to work on his craft. Plenty of people like to make excuses for Griffin and blame everything on the coach and front office. I think that maybe, just maybe we're only catching a glimpse of what has been going on behind closed doors for a while now. A snowball if you will that had to be put in the microwave. I'm liking what Gruden did for better or worse. Its time to stop the whole tail wagging the dog over there at Redskins park. He didn't have a smile on his face? Why should he?

OK, but that has nothing to do with Griffin. Look, I have been pulling for RG3 as hard as anyone. Check my posts, I predicted his resurgence a few weeks ago. Yes, the oline stinks which we all know, but there is no denying that RG3 played like crap today, and for the most part for the last 2 seasons. He has the tools, but his vision/awareness is very bad. I was really hopeful that Gruden was going to coach him up in those areas, but it looks like Gruden might not think it's possible.

On second thought, the Skins should NOT bench RG3. Ride it out and know for sure what he is by the end of the season 1 way or the other.

He referenced a rookie starting at LT on the road being a contributor but he also referenced the protection as a whole multiple times. He also said that he needed to work on the offense as a whole as well as the playcalling... i didnt see any pitchforks at all.

Based on what I saw today, the damage is already done, so, he can safely put the pitchfork away. There's no need for it at this point.

And look, I am probably his biggest opposition on this site, just take a few minutes to read through my posting history and you'll see. However, he did enough to win today. He was not bad. He missed a lot of throws, held onto the ball too long and still has trouble seeing the field, but he also had a couple of good series where he looked good against one of the best defenses in the league.

It wasn't the cluster**** we saw last week. We had a chance to win.

Anyone in his camp has to see he is still not the QB he was in 2012 and never will be again. They also need to come to grips with the fact his days as QB in DC are probably coming to an end. But those, like myself, who have been extremely critical of this kid from day 1, need to recognize when he does some good things too.

So basically the D gives up NOTHING, while creating 3 turnovers and we win the game.

While RG3 gets sacked 5 times on 19 pass attempts, better than 1 sack per 4 passes, throws worm burners as often as completing his dumpoffs, with a total of 2 plays that an NFL QB makes a 20+ times a game.

I think his trust in the coach & his desire to play for him is paramount. And I think that has been destroyed. Joke all you want, but I challenge you to try to do your job with the same enthusiasm after your boss dismantles you for your mistakes in front of the rest of your coworkers & then essentially threatens your job to boot.

Like I've said in previous posts, I would have no problem with the "tough" love approach in Gruden's office. But to do it publicly damaged the trust between them & yes, broke the spirit of his starting QB. He better have a plan to build him back up. Otherwise, the rest of this season is going to be one bad performance after another.

He had a Qb's dream twice today: the ball in his hands,twice late in the game and did nothing with it.

All good QBs know when to take a risk and when not to. Robert's problem?

He doesn't take any risks. Which is why Garçon and Jackson are mostly quiet and Reed ( when healthy ) never sees the ball much anymore.

We didn't win today because he didn't do enough. I'm sorry, but when you sign on to be a Qb and proclaim that you are a franchise Qb, it's expected that you should do more.

"Those guys have to be able to lead their team down the field in a hail storm with chaos all around them"- Joe Gibbs on franchise Qbs.

RG3 is incapable of that and it showed again today.

Ok fair enough but I find it hard to believe that this hasn't been happening behind closed doors for a while now. I find it hard to believe that the rest of the team didnt already know what we're finding out now. And with someone who lives and breathes media and social media that it almost had to happen in the media. So many people prop him up no matter what he does wrong Id venture a guess that taking a shot at his squeaky image was all he had left. Im not sold on the way he did it but if things were as bad as I imagine, I guess I can understand.

And for the record, that type of scenario you laid out happens in my industry during just about every charter season or guest trips. So I'm still alive and Ive had my job threatened in front of crew several times.

But Brian, obviously Gruden is the Head Coach of this franchise. He has to hold himself accountable above all else, and the way he carries himself has to be above rebuke and set the example for the team. I don't know if I buy half of what is being said about Griffin, but he is a 24 year old still learning, and I still believe he can be influenced in a positive way by his coaches. I hope this 'tough love' (I think it's more unprofessional and selfish than 'tough', but that's me) works because if it doesn't, we'll never know if a better coach couldn't have salvaged Griffin's career.

Or maybe we will, after we trade him. I am truly stunned that we are going to give up on a 24 year old former Heisman winner, who helped win us the division 2 years ago, without more than a handful of games to try to get it right. But that appears to be the direction this head coach wants to go.

I'm starting to wish we had not signed him to a long-term contract.

Thing is we don't know if what you suggest hasn't been going on behind close doors and RG's not taking the coaching and this is a Gruden's last ditch effort to light a fire under him. It's hard to judge in the vacuum of what we see. RG is young and has a lot to learn that he never was exposed too. Part of that is how to learn the game. It's always been easy for him and now he has to work for the knowledge he lacks. He may not be capable. He's so athletic, you'd think he'll grow into. But there've been countless smart athletic players that just couldn't make the transition. He shows a tremendous lack of feel for the game and he may never get it. As a Head Coach, Gruden has to make a decision and he's not going to take more than one season to do it. He simply can't afford too. If he's decided RG isn't the guy and isn't going to be the guy, I can see him throwing down the gauntlet. Improve now or be gone. Gruden certainly isn't going to be willing to spin his wheels on a QB he has no confidence in. I think this is all a symptom of total lack of consistency with this team. We'll never build a winner if we don't stick with a coaching staff long enough turn things around. I think there is a ton more we're no privy to driving this, just like last year, and RG's the common factor, whatever that means. There may have been much more to his benching last year.

Griffins numbers were bad and there's no denying it.

In chat today we were honest and fair. We criticized when he screwed up, gave credit when he did well, and laughed when the media didn't know what they were doing or talking about.

I recall a lot of good stuff today and the vibe being he didn't lose his job or the game. He did hold on too long at times but that line was atrocious.

Yup, agree about the chat. I came away ambivalent really. He didn't do much of anything, but he took a beating in not doing it. Line was a sieve. Since we can't see the whole field, it's hard to know how much is him not making correct decisions, and how much is nothing being there before the pressure got to him. If I'm Gruden I tell Bruce and Dan we're gonna struggle until you get me some freaking Oline beasts. Then I make a decision on Griff. Realistically, what QB has ever had this type of start to his career and gone on to great things? I want to be positive that he's super athletic and smart and will get it eventually, but intellectually I'm not convincing myself. I think he definitely plays every game this year. If he doesn't show some signs of growth it's open competition next year. Make him learn and earn it.

I wish he'd address the procedure calls one time in a presser. Uh, but that would be on the coaches, wouldn't it?

Every presser I've watched this season, he's always said "us coaches and play callers need to do better" or something to that effect.

Not great but certainly not 'awful'. It would have helped a lot of Gruden had given his some help on key downs instead of leaving him on an island against Aldon Smith as well.

Not great but certainly not 'awful'. It would have helped a lot of Gruden had given his some help on key downs instead of leaving him on an island against Aldon Smith as well.

There was one play that Helu was in the backfield and he went to chip up the middle... where there was no rush. Aldon smith got around Moses and blew up Griff from behind. Is that an instance where Griffin needs to change the protection at the line when he saw where the pressure could be coming from? I couldn't tell if Helu was on a delayed leak out to the flat, or if he was there for help in blocking and when nobody came up the middle he tried to make himself available as a check down.
