2014 Cuts, Releases, and FA Signings

The team was willing to put Trunk on the PS and help him learn. No other team has shown interest and he possibly derailed any semblance of an NFL career before it even began. Good luck in the CFL kid.
 
The Washington PotatoSkins (asshole... I guess he can't spell Redskins) released Lache Seastrunk, the RB from Texas whose recruiting got Chip Kelly into trouble with the NCAA, according to Rotoworld.

Seastrunk was a 5-star recruit from Temple, Texas, a track star as well as a USA Today All-USA football player.

He was the center of Chip Kelly's only recruiting scandal. Oregon was investigated over sketchy dealings with Willy Lyles, a football "scout" (friend and mentor of Seastrunk) that the team paid $25,000 shortly before the running back committed to the Ducks.

Some thought the $25,000 was a de facto bribe for Seastrunk's services, or a sort of lobbyist fee, but the NCAA's very thorough investigation never found any evidence to that effect. The violation was technical -- scouting reports are required to be in writing, but when asked to produced his report, it was found to be old, rehashed material. My sense is that Willie Lyles might not have been the world's most fluent writer, and delivered his real reports verbally. When pressed to produce paper, he cobbled together whatever h could.

The team was put on probation and lost a scholarship for three years, and Chip Kelly would need NCAA permission to resume coaching at the college level before the end of 2014.

After Oregon recruited Seastrunk, he never actually played for the Ducks. His freshman year, the team was led by star running backs LaMichael James and Kenjon Barner, and went to the National Championship Game. Seastrunk redshirted. The following summer, the Ducks recruited an even faster RB, De'Anthony Thomas, and Seastrunk transferred to Baylor before the season began.

His only carries for Oregon were in the Spring Game, playing for the Green team in the scrimmage. His final line was 11-35, with one reception for 7 yards.

Seastrunk became surplus in Washington with the emergence of Silas Redd, the USC transfer who also caused Chip some grief in his college days -- but only on the playing field.

so did I. but we have a good running game...most of the time. we need to focus on the o-line. I think it remains the weak link and really hasn't been upgraded. hopefully, the rooks will step in at some time during the season and start the process of becoming an NFL caliber line when it comes to pass pro. until then...Robert? how much insurance you carry?

The regular season has finally arrived and the Redskins have handed out a few new jersey numbers.

Safety Duke Ihenacho, acquired Saturday off waivers from Denver, will wear No. 35. That number previously belonged to safety Akeem Davis, who is expected to join the practice squad Monday provided he clears waivers, and running back Lache Seastrunk, who was cut Saturday.

Inside linebacker Will Compton will switch to No. 51 after sharing No. 46 with Alfred Morris during training camp.

Outside linebacker Gabe Miller will wear No. 50, which had previously belonged to Rob Jackson. Miller wore No. 45 in training camp.

Running back Silas Redd, meantime, will wear No. 32. Redd shared No. 24 with Bacarri Rambo during camp

Just some perspective. Our OL could be better, but it is not the worst.
 
It doesn't have to be the worst...it just has to be as bad as the whole right side of our OL, compounded with a young QB who likes to do too much when hurried, to make this team bad enough to be mediocre at best. Cam Newton is big enough to absorb those hits...Robert is not.

You guys can buy into the playoff hunt ideal all you want, but the reality is if this team wins 8 games, we will have accomplished a lot. 3-13 was not the anomaly, 10-6 was. We're not that good. We just have some shiny new toys with a new philosophy in place, but the same OL problems we've had for years...we cannot protect the QB as well as needed in Washington.

Man, am I the only one dying to know what the deal is with Seastrunk? Really weird situation. I feel like TMZ needs to get some reporting in there. I don't really care about the kid that much, but it's hard for me to imagine how he fell from favor so quickly. Interesting situation.

how much more does Newton run?

and...BB...comparing us to another team that doesn't protect its QB well...is perhaps not all that reassuring.

He was never in a favored status. He was a sixth round choice and that made him a kind of look-see, kick the tires sort of player. They knew he couldn't block or catch very well, but were hoping to see some progress in areas of need and not just the occasional burst against third and fourth string players. No other team wanted him - even on their practice squad.

Great point. We should probably compare our team to the SB champions. That will at least tell us where we need to be to actually have a chance at winning it all.

Seattle was sacked 44 times last season.

We were sacked 43 times.

Philly, our division winners? Sacked 46 times.

Man, our o-line sucks. No one can win giving up sacks like we do. It's clearly a huge problem.

Anyone who believes that our o-line is terrible in pass blocking either simply doesn't watch, or know enough about other teams in the league to compare. Almost every team gives up a lot of sacks. I don't hear Seattle fans or Philly fans constantly whining that their o-lines suck.

Seriously, it's time to let that absurd myth die.

Well the Strunk really must have gone out of favor with the coaches, big-time
Because he had a lot goin for him to begin with : being RG3's former teammate, he was Gruden's pick unlike Thompson, didn't have major health issues like Thompson (in fact, he played through an injury in preseason), he's Native American, and since no-one here has ever mentioned it - speed speed speed.....
and I don't know what these "character issues" are that several guys are talkin about - because in the interview I saw with him, he really seemed like a classy guy, and I havn't heard any evidence to suggest otherwise - no more evidence about him having character issues, than the evidence we found (or didn't find) with DeSean.

I don't think there is a 'deal'...I think the assessment was that his speed and some highlight reel plays in pre-season weren't enough strengths to overcome an overall inability to perform some key RB tasks on a team loaded with competing talent at that position. I think in the eyes of the coaching staff, he just got beat out and they didn't see enough potential there to commit a roster or PS spot. Many may not agree (I'm not even sure I agree) but I think that's the only obvious explanation.

Don't know why, but I somehow got the impression he saw himself as the greatest thing since pizza and beer, ready for prime time, not the practice squad. Again, don't know why I got that impression.
 
I keep coming back to the character issues. They must have seen something in his character that had them rather give Chris Thompson more time to develop.
