The Name Change

I agree..but it has to be dealt with. This has been around since I was a kid and with these social media "activists" getting to be bigger and more "active" I just want them to side with us and be done with it.

This is the new Kony, the new Blackfish, the new Bundy Ranch.

sigh....
..... Ben Tribbett, hired by the Redskins as a blogger to help in the name battle, announced his resignation via Twitter after only two weeks. Tribbett said on Twitter that, “I don’t want to be a distraction to the team as the political attacks have shifted towards being personal towards me.” He added in a separate tweet that he wanted the debate to be over the name and not over what anything he has said or done in the past. Tribbett, considered a liberal blogger, had been vocal in his support of the name in the past. But he’s also the one who wrote harshly about former Virginia Governor and Senator George Allen after he used the word “macacca” in a 2006 campaign. And Indian Country Today wrote about a few missteps by Tribbett in the past, including a tweet about an encounter at a casino. Tribbett tweeted, “Just took Chief for his last 300. I’d call it a scalping but that seems uncalled for.” Another move that backfired on the Redskins. Regardless of where you stand on this issue, their attempts to win the public over on the name front have not helped.

What a comedy of errors and mess. Frustrating to always have the shit piled onto my favorite team

Yeah, never heard of the guy until he resigned(or intends to) and of course it's everywhere.

Eff this social media thing, folks thinking they can 'control' the message are just naïve, ain't gonna happen.

Once a theme is established it's just too easy to carry it on with little to no regard for any factual base, anything can be interpreted anyway and too easily put out there.

Those who want to see only their side are easily fulfilled.

I've got it ! Name the team the Washington Senators, and have a flaccid penis as the logo...

Not sure I can sport a jersey with a limp johnson on it.

My high school changed from Redmen to RedHawks a few years ago. I refuse to acknowledge it. When we visit, many in the stands still do the same Redmen cheers and chants, and we all still say Redmen, an enterprising young man even started a cottage industry selling clothing with the old logos and everyone still wears them to games and even the school itself.

If the name changes, I'd love to see hundreds of thousands of fans follow the same template. I can tell you one thing, I'll sure be trying to sell original logo gear on the side. There will be a huge market for it, and as far as I can tell, no legal issues in doing it since the trade!ark would be officially dead.

am I missing something in the article? Its that jackass Florio saying that King isn't throwing dirt. True, he isn't. But all I can see that he literally says is
7. I think the Washington franchise will have a new team name by 2016.

OK, well I think Peter King will still be a blowhard from SI in 2016.

That is NOT an attack on you at all, bud. I just know that Florio and King are some of the main mouth pieces in changing the name and attacking our team whenever they get the chance. I would have to be convinced otherwise that they aren't before I gave them the benefit of the doubt.

Peter King likes to think his voice carries into the ears of those who matter.

He is one on the most biased sports writers you will find anywhere in the world.

He also writes without knowing the facts.

In that same article he says he misses the World cup and it should be every 2 years not every year.

Oh Peter do some RESEARCH it cannot be held every two years because of the Copa America and the European championships, somthing even a modicum of RESEARCH he would have found out.

Good Lord I hate Peter King almost as much as I hate this entire topic.

John, I gotta agree with you though in that if our team is forced to change its name somehow we should abandon the Native American theme and anything even remotely associated with Native American culture.

Peter King is the feces of the journalistic world.

Thing is if by chance in hell we have to rename we can't be an animal either. I mean wouldn't want to offend PETA for goodness sakes. Have to become the DC Pine Trees or something equally retarded.

I heard Peter King (spit on his name) say when 20 to 30 percent of native americans find your name offensive and minority of those find it violently so. It is time to change your name.

Seriously last I checked the USA was a Democracy. Rule by democracy does not mean minority of a minority determines what the majority do.

That is liberal/socialist thinking. And it makes me want to throw up.

King ceased being relevant several years ago ... he's hanging on by his fingernails, so taking a stand on an easy 'hot button' issue is good purchase for him.

I'd like to see someone publicly challenge him (or anyone else) to support that 20-30% figure he throws out there.

I can't stand this entire subject!

This is politics intended to distract from more serious issues. the worst part ot it? the people pushing hardest almost uniformly have taken care of themselves their entire lives and done nothing really substantive. the irony in this is...whether self-serving or not....Dan Snyder has put his dollars on the table for tribal causes. King simply uses a media soapbox and thumps his chest on what aq great guy he is....even though 99% of these media types don't do a damn thing when it comes to real rubber meeting real roads.

They're "a voice"...cuz...they "really care". yea. right.
