Oh, there were ads?
 
If you prefer to use Firefox, ads are thing of the past if you install an add-on called Ad Block Plus.

I can't even remember the last time I saw an online ad, or even a pop-up ad for that matter.
 
For those with IE10 it's built in. Settings -> Options -> Privacy

seems to me this is a fix vendors need to make. Are vendors having difficulty upgrading drivers to W8? Or is it an issue with Windows HAL?

interesting. One can expect these problems at a major transition. but they should be fixed pretty quickly.
 
Well... I actually just have a hard time buying it. I could understand if there was an old printer that didn't work here and there, but I just don't buy that people are having those problems - unless those people have done something backasswards.

Microsoft got rid of the need for vendor specific drivers for printers and many other devices. If a vendor specific driver is available and you load it, it'll use that. But Windows 6.2 (server 2012/windows8) is built to use generic drivers to work with pretty much every type of printer out there.

This was a big push in all the release press conferences dating back 6-8 months ago. If there were truly that many problems with it there would have been some fixes released, or at least some big discussion of it on the places I frequent/get my news from.

I don't think I've hooked a printer up to windows 8 that didn't work right off the bat, and I unfortunately have a lot of printers I manage. I really, really hate printers. they are about the only devices that haven't advanced in the last 20 years. I'm not so naïve that I think there aren't possibly any problems out there, I'm sure there are, I just don't think it's anything near wide scale.
 
you're right...back in the day...way back.....printers were a pain-in-the-arse also when different customer subsets were running different network protocols .
 
It's only befuddling if you're young or have spent your life in the middle/upper class.
 
i don't doubt that there are tons of people that still use 56k either because they just seriously can't justify paying more for better, can't afford it, or it's not available. my inlaws were on it until about a year ago and it wasn't a financial issue, simply where they live; they live 45 minutes outside of washington DC, it's not literally the middle of nowhere.

the thing i find befuddling is that AOL is loosing so much money on all the websites they went in bought up (to hedge themselves against a dying dial-up modem market) but that they're still making so much on the dial-up market that their stocks are out performing top tech companies invested in significantly more advanced technology.

if they hadn't bought all those websites they'd be outperforming them by an even greater margin - solely based on providing dialup service.

I'm convinced there's this super secrete society of buzzword creators. They sit in a dark room, smoke cigars, and try to plan the next industry they're going to create buzzwords for and then run commercials trying to convince people to spend their entire education on it in college, or convince small businesses to pay large consultant fees, etc.

When you hear someone say 'big data' smack them with the closest object.

People add browser extensions/plug-ins willy-nilly and they're huge security holes. It's part of the reason you have to look at the 'browser security' reports with a huge amount of skepticism - did they run those tests with the barebones browsers with no plug-ins/extensions or did they run them with the average-configured browser?

I don't know many people that run google chrome or firefox bare-bones with no plug-ins, extensions, or add-ons. I don't have any extensions for my chrome setup, but most people install things to block ads, or give them facebook chat, or other items.

Likewise, plug-ins, add-ons are what contributes to most of IE's low security scores lately.

They're vectors for all sorts of problems. It looks like this one just captures your login information. Not surprised.

That's not to suggest google chrome is a bad browser. It's not. You have to be careful what you install over top of it as an add on, that's all.

Same goes for apps on your phone. Or programs you install on your computer. The underlying system is mostly secure - you compromise it when you start tacking 3rd party crap on top of it.
 
Side note - an interesting observation is that the authors chose the following 'heading' for their link:
"•15 YEAR-OLD VICTIM OF BULLYING COMMITS SUICIDE AFTER SHOWING HER BREASTS ON FACEBOOK."

There's a reason they chose that. They know those types of headlines will garner the most clicks, the most 'likes', the most reposts.

What conclusion you draw from that is up to you. I'm sure there are quite a few, diverse yet equally valid, conclusions you could come up with. ;)
 
So the risk outweighs the benefit with browser add-ons ?
When I try to un-install Firefox, it fails to do so. In fact, when I click "remove program" in the control panel, I get no response at all. Could this be related to that issue ?

Well, I can't say that as a blanket statement. You have to factor in a number of things, some of which are subjective, as to risk vs reward.

The only plug-in I use is one for web development, and it's for a browser I only use for those purposes - which lately, are few and far between.

I don't know why firefox wont uninstall, but I doubt it has anything to do with the malicious plug-in being mentioned in the original article.
 
If you are trying to install the latest Firefox (v20 or 21) on an XP machine, that could be where your problem lies.

I just allowed v21 to download and install automatically, so I have never had any problems.
