In the end I thought Manning would play in a medium market in the AFC.

Manning is not a city boy and I doubt he ever thought about playing in NY, Wash,etc regardless of the situation in re winning or coaching.

Manning likes to be a big fish in a small pond and in places like Indy and Denver that's what he can be.

SF is a better team than Denver but again there is the big market pressure and stiff competition in the NFC from NYG, GB, NO, CHI, etc.

In the AFC Pitt and SD look like they are taking a step back and NE certainly looks more vulnerable than in years past when they had offensive/defensive balance.

I just don't think the market for Alex Smith's services is as deep as you seem to think it is. Suppy and demand - in order for Alex to have them over a barrel, there's got to be other teams who want him (limited supply that can't meet demand). Unfortunately for him, I doubt there's more than one team that wants him (as the starter, anyway). Therefore his demand is not that great, and he has no leverage.

I mean, I suppose he could always just tell them he's retiring, but then he loses out altogether. I doubt that is an option.
 
If Tarvaris Jackson and Rex Grossman could start games in the NFL last year, there is a place for Smith given his 2011 production.

Remember the 49ers were a defensive powerhouse. They had a good running game.

But Smith made plays with his feet and with a receivers corps that outside of Vernon Davis at TE was very average.
 
Basically Smith and the 49ers are apparently a good fit for each other and no one else. Makes negotiating interesting.

Yes. But you have to have a big ego to play any professional sport, and Smith's ego got bruised. It depends on whether or not he is able to put that aside and do what is best for his career now, or whether he will hold a grudge. Doesn't help him that SF is really the only team on the market looking for a QB now. I guess maybe CLE (does God hate Cleveland, by the way?), so he has a little leverage. Maybe.
 
IMO, Smith's best move would be to swallow some of that hurt pride and stick with the 49ers-it's his best chance of having success and a return to the playoffs. As has been mentioned, I don't think there's a strong enough market for his services elsewhere.

Cleveland? Does anybody really want to go to Cleveland?

On ESPN this morning there was talk that Harbaugh originally did not want to pursue Manning and the front office and ownership were the ones that initiated the conversations.

If that is true and Smith thinks that Harbaugh 'had his back' then it might be easier for Smith to go back to SF and play there.
 
5 years, $96M for Peyton. My goodness. The Broncos ARE aware that his neck is held together with gorilla glue, right? I mean, Christ. That's a lot of money to bet on that neck...I wonder if its mostly incentive-based?
 
Well, did you actually believe that Manning was not about the money also? :laugh:

In Indy, Peyton saw no reason to do what Brady and other qbs have done in asking for less than the max to allow the team to sign other players.

Peyton's last bonus handicapped the Colts so that their ONLY moves could come with their draft picks or street free agents.
 
Okay, so I have to say it. I think Denver is ****ing up the Tebow thing.

When they signed PM my first thought was "damn, perfect situation--let Manning take the reigns for 2-4 years ,and let Tebow sit and learn behind him. Kid showed me enough to make it worth seeing what he turns into with some NFL teaching and experience." Instead, for whatever reason(s), they're apparently cutting him loose.

Which means they need to GET a youngster to groom behind PM or they are wasting an historic opportunity.

I'll give them the benefit of the doubt that they've seen all they need to see from Tebow and don't think he's worth keeping around EVEN THOUGH his cult followers are crazy. But if he blows up somewhere else though, Denver may look back on this in 2-3 and wonder wtf they there thinking.
 
I have yet to see the guaranteed money associated with the contract. That, along with whatever protections Denver has included related to injury, will be interesting.

I think the brass in Denver didn't really like Tebow that much, but to try and go in a different direction would have been a PR nightmare. Manning was just about the only way out of it.

Let's see what happens now. There are several QB-desperate teams out there at the moment and Tebow could be had probably for a mid-rounder. Depending on how fast he moves, and for what price, we may be able to better judge whether the Broncos screwed themselves, and how badly.

So far I haven't heard of any interest in Tebow. But to be fair I haven't really been paying attention.
 
No athlete is as good at 36/37 as he was at 3O. Multiply the odds against if he has had a serious injury that points back to repetitive stress.

Manning at 30 was worth this contract, at 36 with the recent history he is not.

I think Elway fell into the same trap of a lot of other GMs and coaches in the NFL that reach for the quick fix.

They usually don't work out.
